What are you recommended tile sets as a new DM working for first time with roll20?

So I can probably pull out about 150 for 'things' for roll20 in addition to a pro sub.  This is like asking the mouse what cheese to buy but does anyone have some sets they feel are really usesful to have getting started?  I am likely to start a game in P2 playtest rules set but I am fairly sure 'building it' can be started now. I initially wanted to start in a major city and have the group do some investigation and role playing and ending up in a strait-forward dungeon crawl. Cliche but that theme does work for first time play.  Another option was to simply import the playtest dungeon but not sure if this can be done. ..suggestions?

It will kind of depend on your taste.&nbsp; I'm a huge fan of all Gabriel Pickard's work.&nbsp; I particularly love his Red Cap's Maps series, which is a midway between old-school simplicity and modern complexity.&nbsp; It's a construction set, so you drop down lots of little pieces to make up the dungeon/castle/town/wilderness that you want.&nbsp; A little time consuming but you pretty much get exactly what you want out of it.&nbsp; (Some examples of Red Cap Maps: <a href="https://app.roll20.net/forum/permalink/3304442/" rel="nofollow">https://app.roll20.net/forum/permalink/3304442/</a> ) I also use a bunch of his premade stuff (One of his premades:&nbsp; <a href="https://app.roll20.net/forum/permalink/3304503/" rel="nofollow">https://app.roll20.net/forum/permalink/3304503/</a> &nbsp;)
Wow! This is exactly the kind of Info I really needed! I was not sure where to start and I do enjoy building from scratch..possibly adding larger pieces as needed. I can see the roll20 system being a DM hobbyist's long term time and money sink. Over 20 years I sunk 1300 in Advanced Squad leader modules so this looks like my new&nbsp; home.&nbsp; Again your suggesting nails it for me. Um. Monsters and Character tokens? This sounds kinda lame but my philosophy is if if the token/tile is good art or quality and detail the player will be more likely to identify with his character. To that end are there some good player tokens you suggest?&nbsp;&nbsp;
Aaron, That is really cool What do the numbers mean in the circles above the Character? Is it AC and Hitpoints?&nbsp; I can see I am going to need to really study how to use this tool. How long did you work with it before you really got good at placement and lighting?&nbsp;

For tokens, I really like Devin Night's work (and he does custom commissions if you have something specific you need). You can put whatever you like in the bubbles.&nbsp; I like red to be hit points (you get a bar if you put a max value in), green to be AC, and blue to be speed or something character specific (warlock slots, luck points, psi points, etc).&nbsp; They can be linked to attributes on the character sheet so that the token's hp and character's hp stay in sync ( bye bye bye! (ya know, like the band? =D) )&nbsp; Speaking of tokens, the #1 thing that trips up people new to Roll20 is this:&nbsp; <a href="https://wiki.roll20.net/Linking_Tokens_to_Journals" rel="nofollow">https://wiki.roll20.net/Linking_Tokens_to_Journals</a> As for getting good at lighting, I've put in a few hours on Roll20... (*cough*&nbsp;18676 Hours Played *cough*), but it shouldn't take too long to get good at it.&nbsp; There are lots of little tips and tricks you can apply.&nbsp; If you run into anything that seems harder than it should be, post on the forum and we'll help you find a better way to do it or at least commiserate with you about the issue!
Agreed with the above: Devin Night's tokens are top-down 'realistic' tokens, which I prefer. A lot of others like the round-bordered image tokens. It depends on what you're going for as a GM. Gabriel Pickard's mapping is excellent, I've been using some of his free tilesets for a very long time and am quite happy with them. I'd also like to recommend Meditating Munky. He has a lot of good tilesets and completed maps for sale. I'd suggest either buying just a few sets, ones you know you're going to use, and adding more later. Of course, you can also add your own assets into the game, and there's a lot of free and "free" stuff on the internet! Spend time playing with the tools available. There's a LOT of them, and you can just use what you like and ignore the rest. I've seen games where the GM doesn't even bother with maps, just puts up an image that evokes the feel of the scene, such as a tavern or a battlefield. Some GMs will use a map and simple tokens. Some will use complex maps and highly automated tokens. It's all about how much you want to do as a GM, I guess. As a PRO subscriber, look into API scripts and the Transmogrifier. There's a guy here, TheAardvark or something, who writes some good API stuff. Wonder if he's still active, and how many hours he may have played? As for myself, I use maps, tokens, and all kinds of weird stuff to almost fully automate my games. Makes it easy for new players to join, and experienced players have lots of options. If you'd like to take a look at my setup, chat about R20 and gaming stuff, or just ask questions, send me a PM. -Barth, owner and bartender of The Color Animal Inn
I have one more small question. I want to upload some maps and use them. Do I have to add them to a page? I uploaded some but Not sure how i can get them on the table top. They are in GIF format.&nbsp; I was also tinkering with dungeon painter and realized I could just make my own maps with that and import them.&nbsp; I am stuck on actually being able to 'use them' I see them in my uploaded area but cant seem to drag n drop them onto the grid. What step am i missing?&nbsp; Larsenex
GIF format might not work; it certainly won't animate. Roll20 likes JPG and PNG files, pretty much exclusively. Once you've uploaded an image, go to your library and simply drag it onto the map. You'll need to adjust size and position, and make sure it's on the right layer. Sometimes (especially lately) it can take quite a while for R20 to show the image; be patient.
Ah ok so gif no go. How can I delete files/gifs in my library?
Well, there's this tool: LIBRARY Just be aware that: -- This library management tool is deprecated and no longer supported. Using this tool may cause breaking changes to your in-app art library folder structure or other issues.-- Also, a free user only gets a little bit of storage space, and filesize is limited. As a PRO user, you can upload images as large as 10mb.

Thanks for the shout out, Phnord! Much appreciated!!! If you are like me, then you want things that are compatible, so a big aim for my tile sets is to be as compatible as I possibly can with other popular styles. The Aaron mentioned, Gabriel, who is one of my personal favorite artists and has been a huge influence on my style, but also don't forget to check out other artists like David Hemenway, Russ Hapke, Aaron Z Arrick, Brass Badger, Chibbin Grove, and Odinson Games. They all have excellent maps that I have used in my own games and highly enjoy them all. After all, when I make a pizza I find the best results when I use a blend of cheese, not just one Mozzarella!!! For tokens I'm also a huge fan of Devin Night, and if you like the Top Down "Miniature Figurine" style token, also check out Grae Hunter, David North, Valentine's Exotics, and Riley Owens. They all have some great work as well!
