How does a GM add a character sheet?

To answer the problem "Players can't create a character",  this post says " You need to add a character sheet and then assign it to the player" - but it doesn't say where or how the GM adds the character sheet.  We have searched through all the menus on the right side of the screen but don't see an option to "add a character sheet."  We searched the journal for the word "character" or "sheet" but no results came back.  This seems like a pretty basic function that should be trivial to do. What are we missing?

Confusingly, character sheets are actually called Journals (and the character sheet tab is just one of three tabs in each character Journal ). So, the tab you want is the Journal and handouts tab (cant remember if its just called Journals, Handouts, or Journals and Handouts), and Add A Journal.

The game creator sets the sheet template when they create the game or they can go to the setting page (outside of the game) and choose the sheet template. Inside the game, the GM looks over on the right side at the chat area and choose the journal tab. The first button on that tab says add and you click on that to choose what you add: Folder, Character, or Handout.

I believe it should say Folder, Character , or Handout.

We found our answer.  Under the "Journal" tab (which looks like a newspaper) - there is an "ADD+" button. Click the button and there is an option for CHARACTER SHEET.  AFTER adding the sheet - you have to be sure to fill out the empty text box specifying who *controls* that character sheet. Type the username of the person you want to control it.  THEN you need to be sure to SHOW the sheet to the players - otherwise they won't see it.  If you count how many clicks it takes to do this - you might think that it seems like a preposterous number of clicks to get something so basic done particularly when you have to do it over and over again. You are right.  It will be great day when Roll20 counts the number of clicks it takes to do these things - and makes an effort to decrease that to just 1 or 2 clicks.

Actually, I'm not sure if it could be done with fewer clicks. Though you can omit the "show" step. Create a character sheet. It pops open automatically. Make sure a user can see the sheet. This requires no typing, and is a dropdown of only the players in the game.  Make sure a user can control and edit the sheet. This is chosen from the same drop-down. It is on the same screen that popped up automatically, directly below the first option. It's a 3 step action. Click a button and choose from two drop downs. Steps 2 and 3 are separate because there are some types of characters (mostly journals) that players can see but not necessarily control or edit, such as a party NPC or follower. Some game groups also like other players to be able to see their sheet, but want to keep them from accidentally editing things.

@keithcurtis Of course it can be done. It just takes more imagination...we are creative gamers after all! Here's a click count I did for a game I had to start tonight for five new characters: Menu/Add/Character/Name/CanBeEdited/Avatar/Directory/Directory/SampleToken/Open/SaveChanges/ShowToPlayers/Confirm/DragTokenToDungeon 14 clicks x 5 characters = 70 clicks (!!!) I think I can convince you that of course it can be done with one click per character. In fact, there is also a  zero click solution  for the GM. The Roll20 people have probably figured it out they need to decrease the clicks - they just haven't had the time.  Let's see if I can convince you. Here are several ways to decrease the clicks. My favorite is the second: (1) One Click :  Game Setting : "[ ] Allow invited players to start a new character and add the token for that character to your game."  The GM clicks one button and now players can do whatever they need to do to set up their characters. What's nice about this is that it saves the GM from all that clicking and empowers the players to do what they need.  (2) Zero Click Solution : Make #1 above the default setting for every game. (3) One Click Solution: "A Macro" Create a button that with one click performs the following actions: (1) adds a character sheet; (2) assigns it the name of a player in the game who doesn't currently have a character sheet; (3) attaches a temporary token image to the sheet; (4) Set the permission so the player sees it and has control over it.  Are you still certain it really can't be done? I believe that virtually anyone who puts in the imagination work can think of even more ways to make it one or even zero clicks - and I am certain the Roll20 Team could come up with something even better than the zero click solution above.  That said, I think this thread might be going off topic so we should probably wrap it here.

As a pro subscriber one can always use the welcome package script. That automates the players getting a character sheet when they first join and the GM can setup a global macro that allows them to create more sheets with the click of the macro.

Michael T. You can also look into opening your game for character vault access, allowing players to make their characters in their own games and vault them into yours. But you are probably right that this is veering off target.
