Blood Circuit of Tyr - D&D 4e Dark Sun, Tues & Thurs nights

What could be more exciting than the cheers of an enthralled audience and the blood of your foes splattered across your hands? Nothing, that's what, because the alternative is a corpse that experiences nothing at all. The Blood Circuit of Tyr is the premier gladiatorial championship, where the top teams from across the Tyr Region battle it out across the wasteland's many arenas for glory... and, perhaps, for freedom. You are among the motley assortment of slaves recently acquired by a former champion who earned his freedom through the Blood Circuit and squandered his fame and fortune... now, embittered yet still enriched, he seeks to reclaim his title vicariously, no matter how many lives he has to throw away to get it. This is a D&D 4th Edition campaign set in an altered Dark Sun campaign setting, one where Kalak still reigns over Tyr and where the city states are considerably less hostile to one another. Slavery is still abundant, however, and the gladiatorial games remain the prominent form of entertainment throughout the Region. The players each take up the role of a gladiator slave who will become the next Champions of the Blood Circuit... or die trying. DETAILS Please read all details before deciding if you wish to join this campaign. WHEN: Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10pm Eastern / 7pm Pacific. Each session will last about 2-3 hours. First session is a week and a bit away: Feb 26th. Please expect to show up 10-20 minutes early each day to resolve technical difficulties and reserve your spot. DURATION: This campaign will continue for as long as support for it exists. Ideally, it'll go all the way to level 30. This depends largely on the support provided by players to maintain a high degree of consistent attendance. If the players don't care enough to keep showing up, I won't care enough to keep running it. WHO: Sign up by posting here and by sending me an email with your character file to dnd@soulrift.com (see below). Consider posting what character class you intend to play so subsequent players can try to round out the party, though I'm perfectly happy slaughtering an all-striker team :) OVER-SUBSCRIBING: I will over-subscribe for this campaign because my experience so far with Roll20 has involved a lot of flaky no-shows. There will be no limit to the number of people who are invited to sign up. Instead, the first 6 players who show up for each session will be allowed to play that day, with preference given to anyone who both shows up on time and was present at the previous session. EXPERIENCE LEVEL: I expect every player to be sufficiently familiar with D&D 4th Edition rules and their character's powers and features to make quick decisions on their turn. Although this is probably not a good choice for a player who has never played D&D or used Roll20 before, dedicated novices who are willing to take the time to thoroughly understand their character and seek advice before the session are welcome to join. If players don't know how to use a power properly or delay for a long time, however, I will skip their turn... ROLE-PLAY LEVEL: This will be primarily a combat-oriented campaign, as it takes place primarily within various arenas around the Tyr Region. With that in mind, I expect and encourage a good showing of role-play on the battlefield (see Glory points, below). There will be opportunities for player-driven role-play on and off the battlefield too. TOOLS: I am requiring every player to submit their character sheet in .dnd4e file format so I can load it into the DDI online character builder to verify it. I do not know if 3rd party tools can generate these files, but I highly recommend a DDI subscription so you will see things the way I see them; the version I see will be the "correct" one, including all the most recent errata in the online builder. Any character with house rules (something showing up orange) will be rejected. I will either use Roll20, Google Hangout, or Skype for voice communication. Please post a preference when you sign up below and the decision will be rendered shortly before the first session. Voice communications are required and expected to be clear; users with excessive background noise will be asked to mute when its not their turn. CHARACTER RESTRICTIONS: I will allow all NON-ESSENTIALS characters of Martial, Arcane, Divine, Primal, and Psionic sources (no Shadow). Story-wise, Divine characters will be similar to Primal, though worshiping specific powerful spirits (as there are no gods on Athas), and Arcane characters will be a branch of Psionic study (as magic is tightly controlled on Athas). Thus no player will actually be a magic-user for the purposes of Defiling or Preserving, nor role-playing membership in the Veiled Alliance. Characters may be of most races, though all will have to be "flavoured" for the Dark Sun setting. The following races are not accepted: Hamadryad, Pixie, Revenant, Satyr, Shade, Vryloka, and Warforged. Characters may use any non-Essentials powers. Characters may use most feats, except those that power-swap or feature-swap into Essentials. Characters may ONLY use Dark Sun themes (or no theme at all). Backgrounds will not be used in this campaign. Hybrids are allowed. Ultimately, I reserve the right to reject any excessively quirky or exploitative builds. Characters should be built as level 1 characters with no gold and non-magical combat equipment (as an arena slave, you have no use for, nor access to, an adventurer's kit, food, lighting, or other sundry equipment). SPECIAL RULES FOR BASIC ATTACKS All powers that include "May be used as a Melee Basic Attack" lose that property. For example: Eldritch Strike, Intent Laid Bare, Virtuous Strike etc. Powers that can be used in specific circumstances (as part of a charge, opportunity attack, etc.) can still be used under those conditions. Any character that has an at-will power that is a Melee Weapon or Melee Touch attack may use that power's to-hit and base damage values in place of a Melee Basic Attack. EG: A Monk with Dragon's Tail can make a dex vs fort attack as a Melee Basic Attack, dealing 1d6+dex damage, but it would not knock the target prone; a Rogue with Sly Flourish can make a dex vs AC attack as an MBA dealing 1[W]+dex damage, but it would not add cha modifier damage. EXCEPTION: Druid Beast Form powers (Savage Rend, Grasping Claws, etc.) can still be used as Basic Attacks when in Beast Form. Humanoid Druids would still use strength for Melee Basic Attacks as normal, unless they take Melee Training. Any character that has an at-will power that is Ranged may use that power's range, to-hit, and damage values in place of a Ranged Basic Attack, with the same sort of restrictions as listed above for MBAs. SPECIAL RULES FOR ACTION POINTS Action Point is now an encounter power. Use it or lose it! Characters can now accumulate Glory points when the audience is particularly pleased with their performance. A Glory point can be spent to add 1 to a d20 roll made by that character, or remove 1 from a d20 roll made against that character. Multiple Glory points may be spent together (ie: if a player has 3 points and misses by 3, they can spend all 3 to hit). Players may spend 2 Glory points during a short rest to regain one healing surge. Players may spend 3 Glory points during a short rest to regain the use of a Daily power. Glory points may be carried over from encounter to encounter and are lost during an extended rest. When a character reaches a milestone, their Glory points increase in value, so after the first milestone a Glory point adds or removes 2 from a d20 roll. Expect 4-8 encounters per day; the crowds want their blood and characters may not have the luxury of taking an extended rest whenever they want. OTHER RULES When a character reaches 0 hit points, they may make a single death saving throw: on a result of 20 or higher they spend a healing surge, otherwise they fall unconscious. There are no further death saving throws; such a character can only come back into the action if another character uses a healing power on them. Unconscious creatures cannot be attacked; they are shielded by Templar magic. Slave owners on the Blood Circuit have paid dearly for their slaves and pay the Templars to insure their investment. That said, worthless slaves may be relegated to Death Matches... Characters may take actions during certain types of movement, such as a jump, allowing them to hit targets they would otherwise not be able to reach, or using a minor action to manipulate an environmental object while running past. Falls are resolved at any point during the turn in which they occur. This means that a character may take additional actions right before falling or right before another creature that would fall on their turn falls (eg: teleporting themselves and an enemy into the air, then jumping off the enemy to reach a platform). This campaign will introduce special rules for "Boss" creatures. Boss creatures often have multiple hit locations and have special rules in terms of how they handle status effects and other rules. For example, a dragon might have a body, two arms, and a head; marking one arm does not inhibit the dragon from attacking other characters with the other arm. RULES CALLS: With the exception of rules I intend to change, I will do my best to adhere to the rules as written. In the case where a player disagrees with a rule, the player may voice their interpretation of the rule and I will make a rules call. My rules call at that point will be final and play will continue with that call; I will revise such calls at the END of the session and make decisions for future sessions. I do not want the session itself slowed down by rules issues. FINAL NOTE Now that I've presented all the details, there's one last thing that I'm still tackling with / thinking about: eliminating the 1/2 level bonus to everything. I'd like to get rid of it because that means new characters can come in at level 1 and fight alongside high level characters without huge math imbalances. It also makes a heck of a lot more sense, role-playing-wise, since as you go up levels in the arena you're still fighting more or less the same things. On the other hand, it makes math a nightmare, since every character has to be re-calculated from what the online builder provides. And I like the online builder enough for keeping track of feats and powers that I'm not entirely prepared to abandon it. If you have an opinion about the 1/2 level bonus, please let me know when you sign up for the campaign :)
This sounds very cool. I'll send you a character and I can be ready for the first game next Tuesday. I like using Skype for voice and Roll20 for the interface but I used Google Hangout as well. I would suggest not eliminating the 1/2 level rule for the sake of simplicity. If certain characters make it to higher levels as new players are joining, I think it can still work. It fits with the theme of the campaign as some gladiators become more successful and new replacements are brought in. And you can always make the change later if it becomes an issue. David Skype: dsierra00 stang_999@hotmail.com
Has anyone else signed up for the game? I'd like to join but I'd like to have a clear idea for my schedule. Will you still run the game if less that 6 people show up?
I have heard from no one else as of yet. I will run with a minimum of 4. There are no immediate plans for PvP combat, these are battles against DM-controlled monsters and gladiators.
Man, this game sounds great and I would love to try it... but it may be too late for my schedule. I am on Eastern Time and work comes really early, so staying up until 1am might be too much. I will see about clearing my schedule and if you need a player to fill the table, I will do my best to step up. Couple thoughts / comments - eliminating the 1/2 level bonus sounds like a lot of hassle, and I am not sure it would fix the issue. There are just so many ways for higher level characters to boost their attack rolls and defenses. The expertise and improved defenses feats are just the tip of the iceberg, and were actually implemented to fix an imbalance between monster's abilities and how PCs were scaling up. With boosts to attribute scores, magic weapons, superior implements, etc, a higher level character could easily outstrip a low level one even if the 1/2 bonus was eliminated. I haven't yet found a simple way to fix the 4e math and make it a bounded accuracy system. The best workaround I have experienced is allowing for characters to join (or rejoin after a death) at a higher level than 1. Living Forgotten Realms has some rules for this - basically lvl 4, 8 and 12 are the new "starting points", and allow for a very bare bones, but effective character to be created. For instance, if most of the regular gladiators in this campaign reach level 6 or 7, you could bump the minimum level for all new characters to 4; allowing everyone to participate but still rewarding those who put in the time and effort. Also, given the lack of magic weapons on Athas, were you considering the natural enhancement rules, where characters get a +1 to attacks and defenses every 5 levels? This was designed to make them functionally and mathematically equivalent to PCs in other settings, who are assumed to have magic +1 gear by that point. Finally - is this supposed to be a traditional set up with the PC's fighting cooperatively against monsters, or pure PvP? I would be much more interested in the former; in my experience 4e D&D doesn't hold up well in PvP situations given the gap between damage output and average hit points. I have DDI as well, and although the number of character slots are limited per account, I could help other players create a PC and email a PDF character sheet and the .dnd4e file to Simon. I would prefer Skype or the Roll20 voice chat to Google+, but could make anything work.
I agree with you Nathaniel. I would prefer a traditional game with PC's fighting DM-controlled enemies and it sounds like that's what this will be..so I'm on board. I guess we'll wait and see if we get a few more players. I'll send out an email to soem buddies and see if they're interested.
Sorry about the late time start, it's the absolute earliest I can start each night, especially as I want to START the adventure at 10e/7p and be on half an hour earlier than that to make sure everyone's set up technologically. Yes, this is traditional PC vs the DM combat, not PC vs PC. Well, if we eliminate magic weapons in favour of Athasian-flavoured "masterwork" weapons (which add their enhancement bonus only to damage, not to attack rolls, and have a more limited selection of properties), and blanket eliminate math-fix feats (expertise, improved defenses, etc.) then higher level PCs would have higher accuracy through attributes (at most 4 higher) and lesser / circumstantial effects. I don't find Superior Implement accuracy a problem, as that largely compensates for the difference between +2 and +3 weapon proficiency bonuses. I suppose then we'd run into a problem with huge differences in hit points, so yeah, we kind of come back to having problems introducing level 1 and level 10 heroes into the same battles. OK, none of that then, we'll just work with math as the builder provides it and when a new fighter joins the team I'll pick an appropriate level for them to start at.
Yeah...that should work. We can cross that bridge when we get there. I will happily take a new recruit under my wing if I ever get to a "high" level (though it sounds like this is going to be a pretty deadly game). Will you be using Inherent Bonuses since there is not really too many magic items in Dark Sun? Like Nathaniel said, it helps make up for that inbalance. I've played in a few Dark Sun games and it seemed to work. I've emailed a few buddies and gave them the link to gauge interest.
The DMG2, pages 34-35, has guidelines for adjudicating characters of disparate levels.
I like gaming with Dave and am free on thursdays... although Dave you keep not running marvel... Captain America hates you.
Dark sun 4e? Bi-weekly? Count me in! Also, about the half-level thing. It is part of the math in the system. If you do that with us, you'd have to do it with enemies, along with skill checks, and many other things. Flavor-wise, it is basically that a high-level character has been around the block, and is better at everything than a lower level character. It would be much better to leave it as it is, and for new characters to be around the same level, maybe missing out on powers and feats. I would disagree with allowing divine and reflavoring arcane, but that's just me. Also, your wimpy no death rule I would find lame. see picture on p.86 in DSCS. Saving PCs from death is nice, but what kind of audience would want to go if there's no real threat of death? I'm thinking Mul Battlerager Gladiator Fighter.
I am a huge fan of Arena type combat expecialy in 4e. I still use the downloadable version of character builder before it went to the online version that made unpirateable. If at all posible I would like to avoid buying a ddi subscription but if i can not avoid it I will. my preferences are simply anyways. Im a type of person who has too much free time on his hands and can/will make it to every game session every tue/thur if i know its happening. ill wait for a responce from dm.
Although the late nights are a bit of a concern, I could try and make this work. I would likely be able to make one of the two nights regularly, and try for the second. Realistically, I can't commit to both considering the variability in my work schedule. If that is still cool, my current character ideas are as follows (in rough order of preference): -A half-giant (goliath) battle cleric or barbarian|cleric hybrid -Warlord - grouchy old veteran with a polearm -Iron Fist or Desert Wind Monk -Grapple-based Arena fighter -Some type of non-arcane controller. Maybe something with psionics or polearm shenanigans.
If you don't have a DDI subscription, I will accept other character sheet sources, transcribe them into DDI, and send back out a DDI printed PDF; the important thing for me is to see the power cards with the generated numbers and be able to read verbatim power and feat texts so we're all on the same page when it comes to using them (IE: not using an immediate reaction as an interrupt, or using it more than once per round, etc.). So I count 5 people so far, with some people making one day or the other? If twice a week is too much to ask I can do once a week, or if there's enough people interested we can have slightly different groups on each day. In any case, first session will be next week, Tuesday Feb 26, as planned.
For the people who've signed up here, it would be handy if you also go to the LFG posting for this campaign and sign up that way :) http://app.roll20.net/lfg/listing/2760/blood-circuit-of-tyr
I can't guarantee that I will be able to every Tue/Thur session, but I'd still like to sign up and play when I'm able. I made a Human Shaman and the file can be found at https://www.dropbox.com/s/c2gtt4defl7ahny/Rhogar%20Human%20Shaman.dnd4e Feel free to PM me on roll20, I check the site frequently.
awww, but i wanted to do polearm shenanigans. i was going to repost here, gimme a sec...
So... let me see if I have this straight Chris: Human Shaman Zac: Deva Artificer Nathaniel: Goliath Cleric or Dray Barbarian Kevin: Goliath Fighter I suppose we don't really need a controller, but I think Nathan should definitely go with Barbarian over Str Cleric. Two Leaders will make us hard to kill, but battles might take a little longer.
this sound about right?
That sounds about right from my end. If we have both a shaman and an artificer showing up then I agree another cleric might be leader overkill... even if he is more about smashing things with a morningstar than healing his puny comrades. I will make both of them for now, and when we get closer to game time and have a better idea who will show up, I can decide which one to bring. Heck, one might die a glorious death in the first session anyways :)
>Heck, one might die a glorious death in the first session anyways :) exactly! My cleric died at level 7, but our group still made it to paragon tier. Character death is natural, it happens all the time.
Here is my Goliath Fighter, level 1 https://www.dropbox.com/s/2gkz8s76sy82l3a/Sundrop.dnd4e
Will these sessions be recorded? I'm reluctant to commit since I'm new to both 4e and Roll20, but I'd love to observe and see how it all works together....
I don't have any plans to record them since it sounds like a lot of work, but I don't have any objections to recording / observing if someone else wants to figure out the details.
Could I join?
I assume we are still playing tonight? Who is able to make it?
I will be on to host and we will play if there are at least 4 other players who join in!
Still accepting players for this shindig, by chance?
Of course Simon has the last word on recruitment, but I think we could use some more players, Matthew. We only had four last session, and some alternate players could be helpful.
Well, just in case..... Here's Mirth, a Desert Wind Monk. https://www.dropbox.com/s/hcr4g1f35p8qghg/Mirth01.dnd4e
I am extremely interested and the play times are perfect! I am a somewhat experienced player and am currently a DM at my home game. I have a mic and will download any and all required programs.
You should be able to apply to join here: http://app.roll20.net/lfg/listing/2760/blood-circuit-of-tyr I think we might still have some space, and I would love to see some another gladiator join us
Thanks Nathaniel. Indeed, open registration/joining through that link, we haven't hit more than 4-5 people per night and I might be willing to go as high as 8.... maybe... we'll see. I'm pretty flexible with going with the flow on this campaign :)
is this still open for tonight?
We play on Tuesdays at 9pm eastern / 6pm pacific, and on Thursdays at 10pm eastern / 7pm pacific. I'm no expert at calculating time differences internationally, however I think those time zones are GMT -5 and -8, give or take an hour for daylight saving time.
Hello, my name is William and I'm looking forward to playing today with everyone. This isn't my 1st D&D 4E experience. But this will be my first Roll20.net experience. I'm very excited and enthusiastic because i've been waiting for a way to play at home without having to pay here or there for a service. (I didn't pay for the Character Generator either!). I have mic as well and I also created a Level 1 Cleric linked below : https://www.dropbox.com/s/1adykkpi8x16zt4/Arjhan.dnd4e
Sorry for joining so late, but I really hope that I can participate or at least spectate just to see the game in action if possible. I would really appreciate it. I am new to tabletops, but I have been playing d&d for a couple of months. I have heard much about Dark Sun and heard it's a pretty intensive and hardcore setting out of all the other campaigns.
I'm interest in joining. I'd really like to get a game started on roll20 while I wait patiently for the next game IRL with my friends.
I would be playing as a cleric
I can more than likely make it on Tuesday nights (as has been my trend at work, though I'll let you know for sure if that changes.) The character I'm bringing to the table is a brawling monk, Joe Dogoier (Pronounced Do-GOY-air.) I'll e-mail it to you here shortly, Simon.
