Character Creation related questions.

Hello, So I'am pretty new to DnD and I started making a char to play on Roll20. My questions are : Should I make a char in advance or wait to be in a game to make one ? Is the buy ability system viable here ? And if I roll for gp (I got 100 gp) and buy items do I still get to keep the backround items ?

Those are questions that only a GM for a game you have been invited into could answer so to keep this relevant to Roll20 usage (otherwise it is offtopic and will be removed), you can create a game room for yourself to make characters all you want. There is a character vault you can put them in so you can transfer a static copy (it is a snapshot of the character at that moment) to someone's game if they allow it (plus or higher subscriber. It is generally recommended that you get invited into a game first as every GM runs their game differently and they might have houserules that alter the character creation process.
Thank you, the more you know I guess.
If you want to get your 'D&D Fix' on... I personally think that a safe bet, for a standard D&D 5e game would be to pick a class from the 'Players Handbook', use 'standard array' for the stats (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8 ) and just use the equipment provided in the class description. Any 'rolling' for stats or money may be questioned by the DM.....
