LF1M Player For DnD 3.5 Late Night Fridays 11PM EST (GMT-5)

March 08 (10 years ago)

Edited March 08 (10 years ago)
READ THIS WHOLE GOD DAMN THING OR DON'T WASTE MY TIME. Hugs and Kisses. (Yes, I know it's a wall of text, sorry about that.)
System: DnD 3.5
Time: Fridays 11:30PM EST (GMT-5) [I'm considering pushing this time up to 11pm, still haven't decided, hence the name of the thread]. Sessions last approximately 3-4 hours.
Current # of Players: 4
Frequency: At present we play every week, but that frequency might go down once the players rip through all the stuff I've wrote up so far. So, at worst, it should be an every other week kinda shin-dig. We'll probably play in bursts and then take down-time as needed for me to work up more plot-lines and things for you to do.
Technical Details: We use Google hangouts (Absolute requirement). We talk on mics (Absolute requirement). Sorry no text-based options here. We also have a pseudo-play-by-post thread in our forum for talking to npc's between sessions, being sneaky, doing unusual things, learning about artifacts, equipment, mysterious documents, etc. that the party has found in previous sessions. Trying to use that thread as a way to speed up down-time actions so we can jump right back into the thick of things each session.

Looks like we might have one of our players dropping from our game for RL scheduling issues. So, that leaves the table open for one more person.

A little about me: I'm fairly laid back and I love me some roleplaying. I've been playing dnd since the mid 90s. Took a break to pretend I was cooler than I am, but I've come to accept that I'm a super nerd and I'm down with that. Most of my experience lies in Dnd 3.5 and, as of the past 3 or 4 years, Pathfinder. I've probably got about 12-14 years of playing under my belt and about 3 or 4 years of DMing/GMing. I quite like the WoD d10 based system and am no stranger to Star Wars Saga edition (though I've never really gotten to play many games, just dream and pine and GM a few one-shots for friends).
A little about my DMing Style: I absolutely despise Grids. This game is Gridless. I'm going to repeat that. No grids in my game, no battlemap, no pushing your tokens around 6 squares at a time to where I want to slit my wrists and bleed out over my computer. All that having been said, I am reasonable, sometimes you do just need a map. That's cool, we'll whip one up right quick and push on. My DMing style is mainly narrative based, to use the super cool parlance of folk on this site (I didn't even know that's what it was called until i signed up on here. Thanks roll20!). I prefer role-play over rollplay. I don't let the dice push me around. If it's cool, if it makes for a great story, I'll usually allow it. Does that mean I'll let you win everything and be gods and roam the countryside nigh unbloodied? Absolutely not. I'll gleefully murder you if you make stupid, ill-advised decisions. But I promise we'll all have quite a lot of fun doing it and it will make for a great story and a great game. Annnnd, on the plus side, you get to roll up something new and try something different.

A little about the party: We have a Beastly Fighter, A conniving Rogue, an Illusionist Sorcerer, and a Cleric of Divine Fury (and road maintenance).
The player who may be dropping: He has a change in his RL situation and he may be dropping. I'm still waiting on a 100% confirmation, but it seems fairly likely. So... what do I need from you?

A) Tell me a bit about yourself, your experience with tabletop gaming, and your experience with the system (Dnd 3.5). We welcome all newbies, have a couple in the party already. I don't need to know your sex, gender, bizzare personal identification stuff that would be required by the IRS, but I would like Mature players (18+). That isn't to say the occasional dick joke doesn't fly around the table, but ya know, don't annoy us. Oh, also, I swear like a sailor afflicted with a severe case of tourretes. Sorry, I can barely help it. So, if that offends you, you should probably steer clear..

B) A character concept + Backstory. A note on backstories: I do not want to read a 40 page essay on how your character survived a slew of horrors and dragged his mangled corpse to the shores of tranquility and now finds his way into the party. Nope, not necessary. What I would like, however, is maybe 100 words, no more really, of a little bit about your character. If it helps, you can use this handy template (shamelessly stolen from a wise GM):

Player Name: (whatever handle you prefer)
Character Name:
Age/Sex: (Caution: if you're playing the opposite gender, don't play them annoyingly/stupidly, "I bang every thing in sight and walk around half naked, force raping my victims." Not cool, not appreciated, very swift kick from the game.)
Race:
Personality/Appearance:
Background:
Goals:
(Super important! What does your character hope to achieve? Why did he step out of the cushy comforts of a docile life to go on a crazy adventure spree fighting the undead, hordes of hellhounds, and all around suck every day? Would he be better off at home? Cause if it sounds like it, he's not getting in.)

The Campaign:
At present, the party is only lvl 2, and If I'm being honest we're still in the introductory phase of the game. If it was a book, we're maybe in chapter three of the overall story. Right now, it's a little railroady, a little rigid in nature (ugh, not my taste). Once the party makes it past this introductory phase, the game will open up a lot more. It's set in a homebrew setting, made with player input. Like I said earlier, the party will soon make it past this introductory phase where the game will open up quite a bit and we'll start going wherever the players want to go. Is it totally sandbox? Naw, probably not. Is there quite a bit of latitude where you can choose to go in strange directions and make for new adventures heretofore not discussed? Absolutely! Is there an overarching plot/story? Complicated answer there. What I can say is this, events will transpire in this world, with or without the party input. The party can, of course, go in and eph with those events and totally affect their outcome. However, there are things happening all over the world simultaneously, because time waits for no man!

The Setting:

The Island Nation Myadril:

Capital: Maya'Drus (Mah-yah-Druus) - Located on an island at the mouth of the Bay of Blades. Approximately 120 miles east (as the crow flies) of your present location at the Hollow Mountain Inn. A heavily fortified Island, it began as a small nation-city and spread its influence across the island over the course of the last 400 years.

Ruler: Princess Saron Fel. 4th daughter and only surviving heir to the Fel Dynasty. Princess Saron Fel struggles to maintain her rule surrounded by a cadre of less than loyal Courtesans.

Controlling Factions: Officially, regional control has been delegated to various local magistrates appointed and sworn-in in the presence of the Princess at the Court of Suns. Unofficially, magistrates are often forced to ally themselves with the regional powers that be, be-it warlord or otherwise. Although they have no official status, these are the real heads of state in their respective zones.

(Note, map isn't a 100% accurate, as more details have been filled in by the players in the course of play. They are still in the region that looks like a blob apparently cause it's not resolving right.. sigh)

So, that's really all I've got to say at the moment. Our next game is March 14 11:30PM EST (GMT -5). I look forward to hearing from folks. Oh, before I forget, yes the time is set in stone. No it probably won't change. However, we may play some unscheduled pick-up games if people's time/schedule allows (fairly unlikely though). Finally, don't worry about rolling up your char yet. Let's talk, be friends, see what kind of char concept you've got. Once you get in I'll explain the rules for char creation (not hard at all).
Edit: Unusual Races - I'm down with you being a freak, if you choose to. That having been said, all races are subject to my approval. But I will do my best to work with you and adjust a super overpowered crazy level adjusted race into something more practical and manageable. And do expect to be treated poorly/feared/hated/reviled/spit upon/insulted because dnd has canonized racism.
2nd Edit: No guns. guns dont exist. Dont worry about it. It's cool. No psionics. Not dealing with that garbage.

Question: in the unlikely event your unsure player doesn't drop will the one more be kicked to maintain the status quo?
March 08 (10 years ago)
@Anthony C: I actually won't be accepting new players until I've heard from him that he's a confirmed drop. So, this is really me starting the screening process so we can have a smooth transition if the inevitable occurs. Hence why I asked for just a simple, abbreviated backstory so no one would waste a lot of time fleshing out a concept that doesn't come to fruition. Hope that answered your question.

Got your post, Hell yeah I'd be interested. Do you want me to send you a PM with character info or do you want to wait until you know that the other player isn't going to play?
March 09 (10 years ago)
@James: go ahead and post char concepts here. worst case scenario, i have a short list of people to inv in case of a drop down the line. out of town for the weekend, get back to people on monday.

Alright then, here you are.

Player Name: James

Character
Name:
Konahrik (Originally it was Krethel, but Konahrik sounds way more badass, haha.)

Age/Sex:
23/Male

Race:
Human

Personality/Appearance:
Originally I had Konahrik as Chaotic Good as a foil to his background/ancestry. But thinking about it I'd be willing to have him as Neutral or Neutral Good, just having a little problem thinking about playing him, ya know?

As for personality I was thinking of being him friendly but not out there with it, he'd be willing to help someone in need but he wouldn't really go and ask. Likely he'd be mulling over between helping and figuring out if that person somehow knows him and doesn't want his help. He's fairly curious due to his hobby of exploring and history, so he'd be all up for joining someone to find/explore a ruin or anything old. He's not...sympathetic I guess, but he's prone to look at as much angles as possible on situations; for example he'll kill some Goblins in some ruin but he'll acknowledge that he's the one invading their home and feel a little bad about it. But he also knows that they're hostile to damn near everything and they'd attack anyway. So he'd say both are right and try to save the philosophy when he's less preoccupied.

Background: Alright, so a while back I got bored and made one up. It's based on the Chaotic Good version of Krethel now Konahrik, but it shouldn't be any different because I didn't get to him then. It's a bit of a story/how he came to be so I apologize if it's too much, I didn't finish it because I have a problem putting thoughts in words and it takes much longer for me to write down anything. I'm just going to copy and paste it here:

Krethel grew up being an outcast due to public knowledge that his ancestors belonged to a dragon cult, mostly due to the dragon being an ancient red dragon. Many in his family were in the upper echelons and many took up the red dragons cruelty; torture, kidnapping, pillaging, and human sacrifices made in the dragons name. One of Krethel's ancestors was one the worst committers of these, in particular a mass human sacrifice after raiding a village in honor of the great dragon. The ancient dragon took to her and later deemed her worthy of it's bloodline. With a direct link to the ancient red dragon Krethel's ancestors took to ruling the dragon cult and their power along with their cruelty grew.

Generations of this led to some uprisings, all of which were put down brutally, many by the Krethel's ancestors and few by the red dragon himself. Eventually word spread and many outside groups came together and decided to put a stop to it. Months of sieges along with some help from a few metallic dragons who heard of the red dragon's crimes finally came to an end with much of the cultists slain, with some escaping and the ancient red dragon fleeing.

Krethel's father was young at the time and was absolved of crimes perpetuated by his forebears but due to his ancestry was put in a watch tower and was guarded closely incase other members of the wanted cult would try to contact him. The daughter of the noble whose castle Krethel's father resided in took an interest in the forbidden person that her father warned her. With a maid willing to pass letters between them when she cleaned the room, first simple questions then later secret meetings. /End of copy and paste

So here's the short version. Basically it comes down to Krethel now Konahrik being the born from the noble's daughter and quite a few people being scared that Konahrik would take over due to being of noble blood and would bring the cult back. So eventually the noble father of the daughter had them moved into the outskirts so they wouldn't know the comings and going of the politics while keeping his daughter's nobility just incase she would disown her child and his father. So in a sense Konahrik could gain nobility but no one wants him to. Due to him growing up in the outskirts and a outcast he never had any people in his life besides his mother, father, and the maid who came along with Konahrik's mother when she left. He enjoyed exploring and reading books and later on one of the cultist's who managed to get away came to find Konahrik's father and taught Konahrik how to use his magic (I had planned for Konahrik to be a Sorcerer.) before hiding away so he wouldn't be executed. So Konahrik is curious about his history but on the other hand he's not so enthusiastic about being part of a cult that everyone hates.

Goals: Basically he wants to explore the world and see it's history. But for a more personal goal he wants to find out more of the cult that has colored his entire life. And while he's not sure he'd survive it, he wants to meet the ancient red dragon that is his forebear. He doesn't what to ask/talk about though.

So there we go. I'm sorry about the background being so long, I know that you said that you didn't want them long. I read up on your setting though and it sounds like mine could possible match up with yours, I'm willing to change things around if you don't agree with something.
