Tile Maps Use in Original Content

Hi all... I am very seriously considering putting together a module with the goal to resale on Roll20, and have run into 2 questions that I need some help with, please. 1. If I were to use artwork from a Tile Map package, what are the rules for redistribution? The packages themselves here on Roll20 do not have any legal wording to indicate if redistribution is allowed, and if so, what attribution(s) need to be in-place. 2.Can anyone confirm that using Forgotten Realms locations is prohibited by WoTC? They are arguably "characters" and protected under copyright, yes? I ask as I'd prefer to place my scenario in the FR backdrop, referring to its location adjacent to other FR locations. However, I don't want to get into "legally protected" areas and, assuming the above to be true, would more likely need to either be vague as to location and not mention any specific FR locations, or create a unique world to host the scenario. I'd prefer not to resort to the later options if WoTC is known to be amiable to third-party authors using FR landmarks. Thanks! Ben
1: I'm sure it's in there somewhere - You cannot use any artwork from Roll20 in anything but personal-use games. Some artists will include an option to purchase the rights to their sets, others you might try contacting directly. 2: It's likely that WotC protects their trademarks and intellectual property, such that you'd run into problems trying to use official names and locations without permission. Roll20 has their own licensing agreements with WotC, and to my knowledge this too is equally restricted to personal use only. -Phnord, The Color Animal Inn

#1. Phnord's answer is correct. To further clarify, anything purchased on Roll20, the same as any store, is for personal use only. Commercial licenses must be attained for anything you want to sell that you do not own commercial rights to. #2. You'll have to refer to the OGL / SRD, and if you need further clarification, reach out to WotC or any company that has areas you are referencing. Before releasing product you really need to make sure you have your legal ducks in a row, as you are ultimately legally responsible for any violations of IP or copyright law. Not looking to scare you on this, but when it comes to commercial use legalities, you really need to be careful. I recommend that on anything you're not 100% sure about, assume you don't have the right and work from that assumption to be safe. Looking forward to seeing your creations!

1. Derek Ruiz is one artist who licenses some of his artwork for commercial purposes. You need to contact him for the license. https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/publisher/202/derek-ruiz 2. As mentioned before, everything you put in a module must be your own original content or something you have a license for. For 5e products, that would include OGL products of which the SRD is a core one, but you can also include any OGL portions of other products. However, the Product Identity portions of OGL products may not be used or even mentioned. The SRD gives examples of Product Identity in its OGL license including restricting mention of Forgotten Realms. Essentially, a setting for your adventure would need to be original, setting neutral, or licensed.
Great. Thank you all for the input. I've got a good line on how to get original artwork for the maps and will go with location neutral setting.
