In the morning, the heroes decide to try feeding another pearl to the skull compass. Elaryan volunteers one of his red pearls, which causes the compass to glow red. Unfortunately, the effects of each pearl only last for about a minute, so the companions are forced to move with considerable haste. Poor Lor is reduced to praying for spells on the run as Xhotl sprints after the others. Eovan has returned to life sometime during the night, Lor has taken to referring to Asteris as "the vampire", and Arthas is still nowhere to be found. But the party doesn't let these things distract them from their goal. Eventually, the compass leads them to the lair of the necromantic midgets. After fighting off a necromancer and his pack of blade zombies, the heroes try to get an exact bead, but they find that the compass spins wildly, as though they were right on top of their goal— even though they are in an empty hallway. They decide that the actual goal must lie up or down from their current direction. They choose down randomly, and Eovan dimension doors half the party straight down through the floor. After materializing in solid ground, and being shunted violently to their destination, they find themselves in a small flooded room with a ruined skull pedestal. After much discussion— and a brief battle with some crystal oozes— they decide to start collecting the pedestal's pieces from under the surface. While doing so, Malak discovers a red crystal skull! Some quick experimentation determines that the compass always points at the skull while it is red. Elaryan feeds it another red pearl and Malak wades in a circle around the room; the compass points unerringly toward him. The party decides that the next course of business is to use a blue pearl. At first, Malak argues that the blue crystal skull was destroyed in the Lazarus Chamber, but Elaryan points out that the compass had activated when fed a blue pearl the night before, so they decide that the blue skull must have simply teleported, or perhaps that it was replaced somehow. Rather than waste another pearl, the heroes decide to start by traveling in the direction that the compass pointed the last time it was activated— toward the troglodyte camp. After using dimension door to travel back to the second level, and spending a night resting in the Lazarus chamber, they set out. The troglodyte camp has been largely abandoned, but they are ambushed by the giant trog they saw during their previous encounter. The troglodyte king fights fiercely, but is no match for the combined forces of the party. The heroes slay him, loot his body, and then travel down a steep wooden ramp from the lair into the fungoid jungle. Everyone who played gains 12,000 XP
