Hello my name is Josh and I’m looking to begin hosting/DMing an online D&D 5e campaign. The adventure will begin with Waterdeep: Dragon Heist and will transition into Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage. I’m looking to gather between 5 and 8 adventurers. What to expect from the campaign as a whole: It will see adventurers from level 1 all the way to level 20 and will likely take over a year to compete. The first wing of the adventure (Dragon Heist) takes place in the bustling metropolis of Waterdeep and will feature the heaviest role play of the campaign, however Dungeon of the Mad Mage will feel more like a dungeon crawler, favoring combat encounters to social ones. If dungeon crawlers are not for you, this will not be a campaign you enjoy. What to expect from me as a DM: I’m still fairly new to DMing and have been hosting a pen-and-paper game for about 3 months now. Despite my “newness” I’m fairly confident as a DM and have really fallen into the role. I enjoy encouraging creative solutions and if you think outside the box or provide fantastic roleplay you will definately be rewarded with lower DCs or inspiration. Timeslot: Right now my plan is to run the campaign at 8PM-12AM EST Wednesday nights. I am considering running the campaign twice a week (either Sunday or Saturday nights at the same timeslot.) I realize that most players may not prefer twice a week and I will be consulting players on the subject. What I expect from PCs: Timeliness and Accountability: DnD is a commitment. If your schedule is chaotic and you may miss sessions with little warning, this is not your campaign. I understand that life happens, and DnD is not and should not be paramount in your life, but giving warning that you may not be able to attend really makes all the difference. If absence is habitual I may consider removing you from the group. Really, outside of emergencies, I cannot really think of a reason you cannot spend a minute to notify the DM you will not be attending a session. Voice and Video: I find that voice-only sessions can be alright, but having video can really step up the experience as it allows players to not only voice their characters but also express them. For this reason voice and video will be mandatory for this campaign. You don’t need a high quality camera, just a functioning one that can be interfaced with your personal computer. I understand if you may need some time to acquire one. Currently I plan on using Roll20 for voice and video functionality but I am looking into other options such as google hangouts. Acceptance and Kindness: While this is an 18+ group and mature language will be commonplace, I want to foster an environment of support and acceptance so I have a zero tolerance for bigotry. This includes homophobia, sexism, and racism aimed at your fellow players. That being said appropriately role played racism is a cornerstone of DnD so if your character hates elves because they wiped out his village, that’s fine. I intend on interviewing applicants 1-on-1 then once I have gathered a list of 8 players I will send out more information. To be considered for an interview please make a reply to this forum post and answer the following questions. Alternatively if you would rather the information not be public, send it in a private message to me. Either way, if you are selected for an interview I will send you a private message here on the forum. Name and Age. Note: mature language and themes Timezone and whether or not you foresee problems with the timeslot Experience as a player and whether or not you have been a GM before. Note: new and inexperienced players ARE welcome! Is the voice/video requirement problematic for you? If so, why? If you are anxious to go ahead and create your character, here are the creation rules I am using for my campaign. Character creation and sheets will be handled on DnDBeyond. Character Creation: Permitted Sources: Core 3 (PHB/MM/DMG) Xanathar’s Guide to Everything Volo’s Guide to Monsters (Monster races allowed) Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide Unpermitted Sources: Homebrew, please don’t ask. Unearthed Arcana Guildmaster’s Guide to Ravnica (Magic the Gathering) Wayfinder’s Guide to Eberon Additional unpermitted races: Arakkoa Bugbear Winged Variant Teiflings Feats: If you elect to create a variant human, or at a later date decide to take a feat over an ability score improvement the following feats are not and will not be available. Magic Initiate (IMO this breaks down class identity too much) Lucky Other character creation notes: No duplicate classes within the group I am going to encourage (although I will likely bend on this) that there are no duplicate classes within the group. This encourages identity for each player and creates a more diverse role play environment. For these reasons classes will be first-come first-served based on the 1-on-1 interviews mentioned earlier. No evil PCs. Having evil tendencies or commitments is fine (such as a warlock’s patron conditions), but PCs must be overall good or neutral. This means no murder hobos. No “private” dice rolls. Stats will be rolled at session zero and will be using 4d6 drop low, or standard array. Any other dice determinations in character creation will also be handled at session zero (starting gold for example.) Your background shapes the world. The Sword Coast and the Underdark are established settings, but in our campaign they can be altered and bent to fit your background. Your background is how you will shape the story of the campaign. One of my favorite things to do as a DM is to incorporate PCs’ background’s into magic items, side quests, and NPCs. The more detail you put in, the more you can expect to get out.
