I have never played D&D before. I know some of the basics from recently discovering D&D on Twitch. I have started binge watching campaigns on YouTube instead of Netflix shows, but would like to actually start participating in games. I understand combat, checks, and in-turn play. I also have a basic understanding of map movements, short rests vs long rests, and other little things like that. I understand that it is roleplay, so my character motivates my actions/dialogue. I know if I create a lawful good character that I won't be slaughtering an innocent merchant so I can rob them. My main concern is not knowing the lore very well, or if the lore is even consistent from game-to-game. For example if Race 1 doesn't like Race 2 in one DM's world, is that because those same two races are naturally enemies throughout all D&D lore/games? I also noticed things like some games have experience points per battle, while others simply level up at story milestones instead. I am hoping I have enough understanding of the basics of turn taking that I can absorb the rest as I play. If the game I join is a once a week or twice a week game, hopefully the game has a chat of some kind or discord I can ask questions in while we are not playing in order to be prepared for when game day arrives. I am going to be new, but I would like to be as little of an obstacle as possible. I am usually quick to learn, and don't mind if the DM assigns tasks away from the game or recommends a certain read that will help understand the specific campaign more. I want to both play and learn. I prefer longer term games over one-offs. But being new I am also more willing to do short plays more now, than I will be once I am more experienced, just to start getting the time and experience in. 10am-Midnight (Pacific Time) is the best window of time for me to play. I have discord and will be able to voice as we play.
