I can't seem to figure out how this is suppose to function either my character can see any light in front of them regardless of distance or they can only see the square they occupy
AFoW has some issues since the last big update and the devs are still trying to fix them (I hope). So at the moment I don't recommend using it. What should work: You need to set the tokens to have vision in AFoW. So edit each token and set the distance they reveal the AFoW.
