Gods and Devils Book Two, Chapter 4.3 (session 87, 14 th May
2019) The Party: Naergon Harna, elven wizard (Diviner) Mads Rangle, human fighter/warlock (Fiend: Archdevil
Zariel) Jamna Gleamsilver, gnome rogue (Arcane Trickster) Tomaz Stormwind, human ranger (Hunter) Druscilla Oakenrock, dwarven cleric (Trickery: Mask) Talis Wintercrest, half-elven cleric (War: Bane) [6] Jamna, ducks out of Naergoth’s reach [disengage] and
moves deeper into the apse where she turns and shoots at Rath Modar, the arrow
flies true but Modar maintains his concentration [CON save 14] on his globe.
The dragonsoul wonders around, colliding with the wall of the temple and then
stumbles past Mads who swings and cuts him across the back. The dragonsoul
cries out and stumbles away blindly. The dragonfang claws his way blindly along
the temple wall in the west. Druscilla rolls on the floor below the Great Apse,
cloths and robes burning as the chains contract and her shield of faith ends
[CON save 8] in desperation she uses her helm of teleportation and disappears
from the temple to reappear in the council chamber at Waterdeep, screaming “ someone help me, get these infernal chains
off and heal me quick so I can get back ”. There is a lot of shouting and
running around as servants drop trays and guards level spears and approach
cautiously “ someone get the captain ”
shouts one, “ and a priest ” demands
another. Druscilla strains against the chains as the carpets start to smoulder
but can’t free herself [STR check 13]. “ You
stay still, don’t move ” demands one of the nervous guards pointing his
spear at her. Back in the temple Tomaz groans and twitches [death save
success]. Mads casts eldritch blast at the blinded dragonsoul, the bolts of
force slamming home and killing the cult leader. Mads then runs north towards
Tomaz. The red wizards continue to chant, the streams of energy flowing up into
the Great Apse, although the black stream is now less intense. Rath Modar looks
back at Jamna, snarls and hurls several glowing darts of force at her, each of
which slams home despite the gnome’s attempts to duck and dodge. Naergon
[invisible], hitches his robes up and dashes across to Tomaz, pulling a potion
from his belt as he does. Naergoth moves around and shoots at Jamna, its arrow
catching he in the shoulder and spinning her about as she rolls with the impact
[critical, uncanny dodge]. [7] Jamna runs back towards the Great Apse, turning and
shooting at Rath Modar, Modar waves a hand and an illusory image of the wizard
forms in front of him, the arrow strikes the illusion and clatters harmlessly
to the ground. The dragonfang continues to blindly make his way towards the red
chapel along the temple wall. Druscilla, her robes continuing to burn, rolls on
the floor as the chains continue to tighten. A guard captain runs in, takes
stock and shouts “ get those chains off
her ” and two of the guards rush forward and wrench at the chains with no
effect [STR 15]. A steward follows him in “ put
those fires out, that carpet is extremely valuable, oh my, oh my this isn’t
supposed to happen, do hurry up. Don’t let her near the tables or paintings !”
Druscilla growls “ get me a priest, now. I
need to get back” and strains at the chains without effect [STR 7]. In the
temple Tomaz convulses [death save fail] as Mads pulls out a potion and drinks
it [potion of heroism] and the red wizards continue to chant. Rath Modar again
hurls magic missiles at Jamna, the force bolts slamming into the gnome. Naergon
[invisible] kneels down and pours his potion down Tomaz’s throat [lesser
healing 7 HP] before moving away to his left. Naergoth again shoots at Jamna,
one of its arrows slamming home despite the gnomes best attempts to duck and
dive [uncanny dodge]. [8] Jamna pulls out a potion of invisibility and drinks
it before moving west across the red chapel. The dragonfang continues to
blindly grope along the temple wall. Druscilla continues to roll around on the
floor, robes and carpets burning as the chains bind tighter “ oh my carpets! Watch that tapestry, oh my,
oh my ” cries someone from the back as a priest of Lathander pushes into the
room. The guards, grimacing at the heat, again pull at the chains, this time
dragging them off the dwarf [STR 23]. The priest moves forward and casts heal
[70 HP] on Druscilla “ may the light of
Lathander drive the shadows from your heart ” he mutters as Druscilla
staggers to her feet and casts healing word [9 HP] on herself “ the shadows suit me just fine ” she
growls “ now get me some more healing, I
need to be back in the fight before Tiamat arrives” Tomaz lies on the floor and groaning casts
cure wounds on himself [10 HP] Mads looks across the temple and casts eldritch
blast at the blind dragonfang, force bolts slamming into him twice as the red
wizards continue to chant. Rath Modar looks across to Mads standing over the
body of Tomaz and casts fireball at them, unknowingly including Naergon in the
blast. Tomaz [DEX save 22], Naergon [DEX save 23} and Mads [DEX save legendary
action] all survive the blast, charred and blackened. Naergon still invisible
[CON save 25] casts dimension door, grabs hold of Mads and teleports them to
behind Rath Modar. As they arrive Naergon sees they are next to Jamna [see
invisibility] but he runs past her, to the rear of the red chapel. Naergoth
draws his sword and advances on Mads, who swings his glaive, cutting the undead
[AOO] who reaches out a clawed hand towards Mads but misses. Growling Naergoth
swings with his sword, cutting Mads again and again [multiple criticals]. [9] Jamna [invisible] shoots Rath Modar, the arrow
slamming home into the wizards back as she remerges into sight. Modar roars and
turns, glaring at the gnome as his globe dissipates [CON save 9]. The
dragonfang slowly and blindly gropes his way along the wall. Druscilla glares
around at the guards and priest, the rug beneath her feet still smouldering “ get me more healing!” she demands. “ I have no more to offer dwarf ” retorts
the priest “ may the light of dawn burn
the shadow from your heart.” As he turns and leaves, the guard captain
steps forward “ here take this, it’s all I
have ” and pushes a potion bottle into her blackened fist. Druscilla glares
around “ is this all you offer? I should
let Tiamat have you, its what you deserve ” and activates her helmet,
teleporting back to the black chapel in the temple. She partly materialises on
one side and rebounds from the temple wall, flickering back she appears briefly
in the council chamber before flickering out and again slamming into the temple
wall. Once more she bounces back to Waterdeep before finally reappearing in the
black chapel, staggering and spitting, somewhat dazed. Tomaz clambers to his
feet and staggers towards Druscilla aiming his crossbow up into the apex, fully
expecting to see a black wizard floating above. But there is no one there just
the streams of black energy, regardless Tomaz shoots at the juncture of the
energy where he expected the wizard to be. His bolt finds the invisible wizard
who cries out and becomes visible [CON save 5] hanging silently in the air, the
stream of black energy dwindles to almost nothing. Mads ignores Naergoth and
attacks Rath Modar, his first attack is countered by an illusory image, the
second cuts into the wizard killing him. The red energy diminishes slightly as
Mads swings at Naergoth before moving away. The undead creature claws at Mads
[AOO] but fails to contact. The remaining red wizards continue to chant
although the streams of black and red energy are diminished. Naergon
[invisible] moves into the centre of the red chapel and casts scatter, moving
Jamna and, Mads to the blue chapel and force’s Naergoth into the centre of the
Great Apse [WIS save portent 6]. Naergoth growls, takes stock and seeing Tomaz
just inside the black chapel, moves and tries to claw the range but misses.
Swings his sword and cuts Tomaz down, his final swing impaling the writhing
ranger on the floor [2 failed death saves]. [10] Jamna can see no one in the blue chapel but the
energy stream is flowing strongly. She steps forward intending to shoot at the
junction where she believes an invisible wizard to be but as she approaches,
she sees floating high above another wizard in full sight. She shoots but
misses. The dragonfang gropes his way into the red chapel. Druscilla casts
dimension door and teleports across the Great Apse into the green chapel, she
cannot see a wizard in the stream on the ground but looking up there is one
floating above. Tomaz again groans in a pool of blood [death save success].
Mads moves forward and casts eldritch blast at the levitating wizard in the
blue chapel, slamming him into the wall. The wizard cries out and falters in
his chanting [CON save 2] but remains floating high above. Naergon looks up and
casts firebolt at the wizard floating at the top of the red chapel. The bolt
slams home but doesn’t seem to have any effect [fire immunity]. Naergoth,
stands over Tomaz’s body and draws his longbow and shoots Mads across the Great
Apse, his arrow sliding through a joint in his armour. [11] Jamna shoots at the wizard floating above the blue
chapel, her arrow flies true before she races away [boots of speed]. The
dragonfang, now able to see again jogs down through the red chapel towards
Naergoth. Druscilla casts sacred flame at the wizard high above the green
chapel who cries out and ceases to chant [Con save 11]. Tomaz continues to
groan in his pool of blood [death save 15] as Mads casts eldritch blast at the
wizard high in the blue chapel, killing him. He casts his final bolt at
Naergoth before moving behind the central bowl to get out of Naergoth’s line of
sight as the five remaining wizards continue chanting, the ritual building to a
crescendo. Naergon casts chill touch at the wizard floating high in the red
chapel but fails to break his concentration [CON save 17]. Naergoth searching
for a target, moves to his left until he sees Druscilla, shoots and hits the
heavily armoured dwarf once. [12] Jamna dashes towards the white chapel [boots of
speed] and the dragonfang dashes past the invisible Naergon towards Naergoth.
Druscilla casts sacred flame at the floating wizard in the green chapel,
burning him again as Tomaz convulses on the floor and dies [death save fail].
Mads dashes around the fissures, heading south. The last few red wizards continue
to chant, bringing the ritual towards its conclusion, the portal shimmers and
warps, pulsing in time with the chanting. Naergon uses his staff to cast
lightning bolt on the wizard floating in the red chapel, the wizard ceases to
chant and floats, smoking in the air, spinning slowly. Naergoth again shoots at
Druscilla, one arrow slipping through her armour. [13] Jamna casts invisibility and moves east as the
dragonfang continues to head south. Druscilla moves out of Naergoth’s line of
sight and drinks the potion given her by the guard captain [superior healing
26HP]. Mads continues to move into the white chapel and casts eldritch blast at
the wizard floating in the air, the bolts slamming into him and breaking his
concentration [CON save 1]. The last four red wizards able to chant, continue
to bring the ritual to peak, the air shimmering and energies pulsing as the
skin of the portal domes outward. The wizards on the ground of the green, blue
and white chapels become visible as their greater invisibility spell ends.
Naergon [invisible] hitches his robes and runs east before casting misty step
to teleport to the corner of the blue chapel and casts fire bolt at the lower
wizard, breaking his concentration [CON save 2]. Naergoth runs south towards
the black chapel as the ritual reaches its peak. [14] With a shrieking crack of time and matter being torn
asunder the shimmering aspect of Tiamat appears through the portal. Not yet
quite manifesting on this plane her heads thrash and writhe against the final membranous
barrier stretch tight across the portal. Blue energy with faint traces of
green, red, white and black continues to pour down from Severin, floating high
in the Great Apse. Meagre traces of black and red energy stretch across the temple,
whilst stronger bands of green, white and blue pour out of the chapels. The
chanting that until now has dominated the sound in the temple fades away to be
replaced by the cackling roar of mighty dragons, muffled slightly by the
slender planar barrier. Jamna [invisible] shoots at the wizard floating high in
the white chapel but misses. The last dragonfang dashes around the fissure in
the south. Druscilla casts flame strike on the wizard floating in the green
chapel, killing him in a blaze of unholy light. Mads stares at the aspect of
Tiamat forming in the bowl and raises his arms calling out in infernal “ Zariel, now is the time. I call on you to
fulfil the contract that binds us.” As he does there is another thunderous
crack in reality as a fine line of fire appears in front of Mads, the air
shimmers and the line parts to reveal a glimpse of hell, burning skies and
clouds of sulphurous smoke. The rift opens, wider and wider, through it five immense
shapes step through into the temple. A pit fiend and four ice devils take
station beside Mads as the rift slowly closes behind them. Mads hears a deep
grating voice in his head “ my legions are
sweeping this mountain clean of Tiamat’s slaves. I am instructed to obey your
commands for as long as I remain on this plane in order to counter Tiamat .”
Bel flies forward over the fissures to stand in front of the bowl and portal
and casts hold monster on Tiamat but the spell fails to bite [WIS save 29]. The
wizard from the blue chapel advances and casts fireball at Mads and the ice
devils [DEX save 21] the devils ignore the fire [immunity] as Mads is scorched.
The wizard from the white chapel advances and casts misty step to evade the
devils and into the green chapel. The wizard from the green chapel drops from the
roof and casts ice storm around Mads [DEX save 7] and the ice devils [DEX save
9/16/21/22]. Tiamat starts to rip through the membrane, her heads chewing into
the final barrier. Two of the ice devils move forward preparing to cast wall of
ice [readied action], the third turns and rips into the wizard near it, tearing
its body apart and throwing each half at the manifesting dragon queen. The last
ice devil stands next to Mads. Naergon pulls forth a scroll and casts dimension
door and teleports himself deep into the white chapel to stand behind Mads
becoming visible as he does so. Naergoth moves west and around the fissures to the
north into the red chapel. Next time: More Dragon Gods, Devils and Wizards No levels were gained this
