Give vision but not control?

I am currently trying to setup a game using the LMoP module. Some of the players are of an unruly type so I would like to be able to link their tokens to their character sheets in the journal and give them vision from those tokens BUT I would like to restrict their ability to move those tokens. Is this possible because I have been trying for a few hours and can't figure it out. It seems the "all players can see light" option doesn't do what I would assume it would do. No matter what I do when i remove control over a token or even add in a new token i can't share vision to a player. I am very new to this program please help.

I don't think that is possible to do without the API. I know there is a script out there which can"lock" all tokens whose turn it isn't. I.e. they can drag them around, but the token springs back instantly once released. I hope these players are friends of yours. I'd boot players who couldn't control disruptive urges if there weren't a personal connection to keep me from doing so.
How are they unruly, what exactly are they doing?
I have a player that likes to pick up her token and scan around the map to look ahead. For most maps like random encounters, taverns, or city maps I don't mind. On critical maps I use basic fog of war to mask the whole thing then only reveal what the light courses show. I set dynamic lighting to restrict movement but turn it off to reduce lag. If I really want to keep her from looking ahead I set her token to having sight but remove her light source. I then place a transparent token with her light on the board centered on her that I have control over, and I move it with her. I set that light source so that all can see it. with that she can only see what I let her.

Thats an awful lot of work. I'd have a serious talk with players like these and make it clear that they aren't a good fit for the group (i.e. will get kicked) if they don't treat the other players and GM with respect. It's nerve-wracking to do the first time, no one likes conflict, but it's better in the long run for everyone.
I'm with GiGs. You as the GM do a lot of work for them to be able to play. If they make you do even more work, they don't respect you and what you do.  Maybe there's a reason they do this. So tell them it's bothering you, but ask why they do it and how you can work together to get them to not do it anymore. There's also a technical answer. There's a script which locks tokens to place so nobody or only the gm can move them. Combine it with "update vision on drop" and they can't see ahead. But this too is more work for you and should be considered as last option if you really want to keep them in your game.

FrostyPirate, I realize you are on Plus membership, but for anyone else reading this who has the same problem, look at the TokenLock script—it's in the drop down. It can be set to lock player access to moving tokens unless they are at the top of the turn order.

In addition to what has been said, something that is available as a plus subscriber is to toggle on "only update on drop". They'll still be able to move their tokens, but will no longer have a view of wherever they drag, only where they drop their token. This, in conjunction with dl lines blocking movement makes it very difficult for the players to scout out the map, let alone without you knowing.

Hey guys thanks for the positive feedback and concern. I have been a DM for many years and have experience dealing with all kinds of players. I am choosing to take on the challenge of running a game for this group and I am not worried about a little extra work with my new and unruly player types. However all my experience is in playing face to face and am just learning how to use roll20. So from what i gathered to access this script I require a Pro membership? Is there anything more too it than that? If so could you point me in the right direction to obtain these things, or at least to where i can gain the knowledge? Figured it out. Should have tried before asking. Thanks for your help!

Welcome to Pro. You are going to love playing with the API. Feel free to post any questions in a new thread; there are lots of folks here who like helping. (Sorry if any of us came off as heavy handed on the GM advice. Just watching out for a fellow GM.)
Update: I wasn't super happy with the effect of the token lock script and was messing around a bit. I figured out a couple of settings that really helped and im happy with what i have now. Things i was missing but have figured out: 1st - Page settings for the map, I just found this lol.. 2nd - Restricting movement for dynamic lighting, this is really useful and dropping some barriers could be used to great effect as well as being easy to set up and takes 0 effort and time. 3rd - turning of the "Enforce line of Sight" option. I am okay with my PC's having shared vision and this was what was really stumping me. I couldn't figure out how to let them see a token they had no control over. 4th - This parts a little clunky, but I can give them journal access to a few dummy character sheets (probably blank) which are married to their characters token to provide vision but no control. Then we make up their personal character sheet which they can edit but will not be married to any tokens. Maybe not the most efficient but it gives me the settings for this particular game i am desiring. Thanks again for all your help.

Frosty, If you want a more automated method of giving shared token vision without having to manually create blank copies of their characters, you can try an old script of mine , actually the first script I ever wrote*. * Really, about 60% 1 of it is The Aaron's code that I just transcribed. Eternal gratitude to him for teaching me. 1 Ok, this number may be more like 80-90%, but who's counting? ;)
Looks like exactly what I want! I am a newb though. I know how to add it to my game but not how to control its functions do you have a link on how to use it or could you easily explain it to me here?

Sure, this script's interface is extremely simple. You simply add the aura token (person figure with a shield around it) to a token and normal vision is shared. If you add the overdrive symbol (the circle with spikes/flames coming out) the token's dark vision is shared. And that's it.
Got it, tested and working well. Thanks so much.
