Jukebox - What Audio files Could I Possibly Have The Right To Use?

I don't get this. Unless I'm a composer my self there are virtually no audio files that comes with the right to 'upload' to some server or application. Say I buy some nice music on iTunes or somewhere. They only give me the right to use. Not to spread. Even free to play music like some artist sharing their songs free on their Youtube channel does not give me the right to copy and upload to some server. Roll20 server is no exception. (takes away traffic from their channel. Same as Basic D&D Rules PDF's free on WoTC's site is only free to read from that site unless otherwise specified). This jukebox application seems backwards. If it enabled to play from links and/or to play directly from the hosts computer it would be a different equation all together. Just like linking to available document on WoTC's site is perfectly fine linking or playing from links to legit music sources is also perfectly fine. I'm not sure about playing audio from the hosts computer but it seems closer to personal use equivalent to just playing it while you have guests at home. What are we supposed to do with this? I mean I guess it's the same as the images. Not everyone is an artist to make their own tokens and maps but fewer yet can make music that is so good that its not just unpleasant noise. A long time ago the place to be for online tabletop RPG's was called OpenRPG. They had a jukebox that was basically all based on URL play lists.

Roll20 talked at length about this while planning the MyAudio feature, and consulted legal counsel. Uploading any music you have purchased or otherwise own to the site for playing within a game among a small number of players should be fine and within Fair Use. However, if you are need an official statement, you can either wait for a team member to report here, or write to team@roll20.net.

Thank you! I didn't know that. Personally I'll take your word for it if you are sure. It might be helpful if there is some quick info like this about it in there, or have I just missed it? It just reads "by uploading you assure that you have the right to use these audio files" or some such what I can see. If they have already figured out the legal stuff for common types of ownership and most players here may not have some of that would be useful as tips. Unless they still need to disclaim them selves from any liability of possibly being wrong. I'm probably just overlooking some help section or something
The browser extension VTT Enhancement Suite might be worth checking out, as it adds a feature to add tracks to the jukebox by URL (along with a bunch of other neat features). I just came across it yesterday, so I haven't gotten around to testing it all out myself.

When introducing the system, Roll20 mentioned seeking legal council to avoid copyright issues. Specific controls were instituted regarding a cap on the number of listeners, and ensuring that the system could not be used for file sharing. That info can probably be found by a forum search, but I couldn't dig it up offhand. If you own the music though, using it on Roll20 is fine. The only legal hurdle you might run into is if you are streaming in some manner—that's broadcasting. Then you would need to make sure the music is free and clear (there is information on this in the Jukebox wiki page).
Hi All! With all the different copyright and usage laws around it can be a bit confusing to sort through. When our team put together this update, we cleared the legal red tape so you don’t have to. Under Fair Use, using music you have purchased and/or obtained a personal use license for is okay to do, so long as its with a small group in a personal game. So feel free to use those tracks in the VTT and thanks for the great question! All of that said, I will alert the team so that we can provide some clearer information on our help sites :)
