Questions about purchasing content.

I was just curious as I haven't bought anything through roll 20 yet, but if i purchase a book am I able to view the pdf of it? I figured I would get all the statistical stuff added to the compendium, but was wondering if I could just read the pdf form for all the fluff and illustrations. Also if i purchase a book would i be able to add it to my dm's game, or would they have to buy it?

There is no PDF; it is all in the form of Compendium additions. In fact, if you do come across a PDF of a Wizards of the Coast 5e book, it is most definitely pirated. As for sharing, there are specific rules. Only the creator of a game can share their compendium purchase. If your DM has created their own game, you cannot share your compendium in it. If you create your own game and enable sharing, you can promote another player to DM and they would have access tot he material. More information on Compendium sharing .
Ah thanks for clearing that up. I was bringing up pdf because i was interested in the midgard hero's handbook from kobold press and wasn't sure if i should buy the pdf or the roll20 version. The added functionality with roll 20 is great, but the fluff from the pdf also looks really interesting and wouldn't want to miss out on that.

If content is in a print edition, it should also be in the Roll20 edition; they don't leave anything out. It will not be in a linear format like you'd get in a pdf, but the conversions are pretty darn complete. NOTE: I do not represent Roll20 or Kobold Press. You'd be best served getting official confirmation on these statements.

I can confirm (owning both versions) that all the content is available in the Roll20 version. It is a little more difficult to try to read linearly like you would a pdf, but you won’t miss out on content.
