Use of Attributes - Max Optional

Can anyone explain in layman's terms what the Max (Optional) value in the Attributes and Abilities tab is intended to be used for?  I'm assuming that the idea is that you use this column to preserve the original value of an attribute for reference purposes, but I'm not sure if thats true. e.g. Wounds Current = 5 Max = 8 Would that be reasonable?

It's the maximum value of that attribute. If you set a max and then link a token bar to that attribute, it will display a bar filled to a percentage based on current and max. E.g, 10 / 10 would have a full bar, while 5/10 would be 50% full. If you aren't linking the attribute to a token, then it can really be anything you want although most people will expect it to be a maximum value, since that is it's name.
Thanks that pretty much what I figured.
