Howdy
all, I'm Michael though I also go by Mika, I'm a 27-year-old guy from
East Anglia (Not interested in Offline games until I've moved to a city
which is my goal when getting a new job). I'm a rotund yet friendly chap
who's generally quite enthusiastic about whatever he's getting up to,
which by in large is normally going to be some sort of geeky media
format (While mentioning some I've enjoyed recently) be that game (Hunt
Showdown), TV (Inside Number 9, Glow), Film (Susperia), Audiobook (Brave
New World/Discworld), Podcasts(Adventure Zone, Not Another DnD Podcast,
Dimension 20), and Graphic Novel (Also Adventure Zone) to which I often
spend my time either involving myself with one of them if not talking
to people about stuff like that, so I can tend to be fairly chatty in
general though I know to zip my lips during a session.
I've been playing Pen and Paper games for about 5 years odd now,
mostly 5E though I've run a good dozen systems as a DM and played in a
good few other systems as a player, so I've had plenty of experience on
both sides of the table, you can expect me to turn up on time, rarely be
absent without warning, moderate my presence in a scene in the sense
that I try to make sure the game keeps going if everyone falls silent
but will also try involve others and give them a chance to shine.
I've DMed or played in the following: 5E: DM/Player, Pathfinder:
DM/Player, 3.5: DM/Player, Dungeon World: DM, City of Mists: Player,
Monsterhearts: DM, Blades in the Dark: Player, Scum & Villainy:
DM/Player, 4E: Player, Dark Heresy: Player, Everybody is Jack: DM, World
of Darkness(OMage,NChangeling): Player. I must also add I'm a recent
fanatic of City of Mists, so it's opening up a can of worms if you start
talking to me about it since it's still new to me and I'm excitable
over it admittedly.
Me as a Player
I've been searching for Friday game, especially for the evening, I
can do afternoons currently but as soon as I land a job it's most likely
going to dig into the afternoon.
I've mostly been searching for a 5E or City of Mists game though I
would be open to other systems such as other Powered by the Apocalypse
games, Pathfinder, Mutants & Mastermind (Have yet to try this one
though), and other systems, though for the most part, I'm after that 5E
balance of adventuring/group storytelling/progression/Fantasy. Looking
for a long term game rather than a one shot, I've only really ever done
homebrew and while I'd be willing to give a module a go I must admit I'd
be nervous about it and it's quality, only having dabbled in two which
felt rather railroading though that could have been the DMs (Dark Heresy
intro module & Changling Intro Module).
As for the group I generally work best with a LGBTQ friendly, don't
so much label myself under the banner but I tend to get on better with
folks who are accepting of that sort of things. I tend to gel well with
groups that are expressive and happy to have a light laugh in amusing
character interactions, that will do voices for their characters (I do
voices even if they might be bad) though I don't expect everyone to do
voices of course. For a DM I generally work best with a DM that focuses
more on the story and roleplay aspects of the game, that doesn't make
the players do combat for combat's sake, a bandit encounter while
travelling makes sense, however three bandit encounters without much
variation is just padding to me that gets in the way of the fun. I've
got a bit of an audio disability so I tend to struggle with names and
don't tend to take notes since I can listen and write at the same time,
though I was normally the player in games that'd be always up for doing
recaps if someone forgot. I like my audio visual a fair bit so using
lots of art for the games is a big plus for me, and I'm also happy to
help a DM out with music if needed since I collect a lot of it for my
own games.
To ensure I'm getting the right group I'd generally like to have a
voice call or something in advance with either the DM or some of the
players as well, just to ensure that conversationally we click.
Example Character Concepts
In general I tend to be flexible on what I play though I tend to
design more around the players. I'd prefer not to use the concepts I
post below simply because I tend to try work with the DM more directly
with getting my character to fit in their world, also provides a bit
more of a surprise to the players that way, while also working around
the other players to ensure I don't step on any of their themes and can
create a more enjoyable character to fit into the group's social
dynamic. For example I wouldn't want to play a bear barbarian if another
player was sorta fixated on being a highly strong fighter, I'd also be
basing my character a little bit on the stats, I'm far from a power
gamer though I like a 16 and what not in my main stat and I do enjoy the
planning and fiddling around of ideas though the mechanics but I'm more
the person to fiddle around with feats and ideas that I think might be
narrativily or mechanically fun rather than just chasing combat
efficiency idea.
5E Oldur - Topple the Firbolg - Ancestral Barbarian
A Firbolg who's heavy handed nature left him incapable of druidic
casting, a last ditch attempt was given by his order to prove him worthy
of the teaching. He was to take care of a small patch of decayed land
until it became a wild and lush grove of nature to prove himself as
ready for the teaching once more. Three years and the spot was riddled
with thick nature once more at least until the armies nearby began to
seek lumber of the lands Oldur took care of. In an act of aggression he
attacked and defeated a small band through his ingenuity, time passed
only for his actions to have consequences as mercenaries were paid to
deal with him. Left injured but alive his grove set alight around him
called him to end his time seeking his role among the druid order, now
wearing the spirits and souls of the animals and life that died in the
fires he unintentionally invoked, channelling them with his once shamed
heavy handed nature to be a force to be reckoned with.
Percy Penwei - Rock Gnome - Arcane Trickster Percy came from a family
of inventors, after all Gnomes have a particular tact for such trinkets
yet Percy was always on the bottom end in terms of creations, stiff
competition always proving all too omnipresent where ever he went that
cut him off from resources rather than truly testing his tinkering. The
constant hindrances built up over time, taking a grander and grander
toll on the Gnome's confidence as he started to dabble with the tutelage
of Gnomish wizards for a leg up for a few decades only for it to have
proven to be only a distraction at the time. Set back a few decades
Percy took bolder leaps, retaliating with the methods he felt were given
onto him, stealing parts and resources from more successful inventors
in a way that steadily became an addiction for a time, finding it easier
to cannibalise other's works rather than building from scratch himself.
His new tactic worked for a while till hounds were sniffing at his
door, the once proud Gnome inventor pushed for a while into a life of
crime to which it's effects still linger on him today.
5E Survius Nathaniel - Fire Sorc
Once a high ranking member of the Soul Sun Priesthood, a rather
nefarious holy order known for both their ordered control of their lands
but also their purifying fire whenever a witch was thought discovered.
He undertook many of these purifying assaults on villages under the idea
that his fires were gifted by the divine and that they may only harm
those that were deemed unholy by the lord, at least until their church's
knowledge of the Arcane expanded, his natural magic deemed Sorcery. In
an attempt to save the church Survius was met with not death or exposure
but instead exile, without a home but his talents of as a speaking
priest and control of fire he took to the circus as a fire tamer, his
talents of speaking holy scripture converted into boastful speech
enhanced by him manipulation of great flames, though now his hands
tremble with the passive acts his fires have been used for, seeking now
the wish to use his fire not for faith but in hope of redeeming himself
through acts of good against those he believes evil and not simply
directed by his Church.
One thing I will add as a final note since the player dynamic/dm to
player dynamic is an important thing to me, I ask if we could do a voice
call or something just to chat and see how we get on. I just like to
know I get on well potentially with the DM before we start getting all
prepped and what not.
