My screen is small and narrow, with proportionately reduced text

Has anyone else had this problem?  The active screen is only about 1/3 of the page, with background taking up almost 1/3 on either side.  Everything is compressed in proportion to the size of the active area of the screen, making it difficult for me read text, especially my own typing.

Could you supply a screenshot of what your browser looks like? Also, is your browser's zoom set to something other than 100% (Browser Zoom, not the Roll20 zoom)?
My browser is set to 100% zoom. Here is the  screenshot.

In the screenshot it shows your browser is not set to 100%. In the top right corner there is an icon that is a magnifying glass with a - sign in it. This means you are zoomed out.  This is how it looks normally:  As you can see, there is considerable unused space on either side. If you change your zoom to 100% it should fix the text size issue. Alternately, you can zoom in and increase the text size that way. - Gauss
