Elaryan and Arthas press forward into the subterranean lair, leaving the rest of the party to guard the entrance. They encounter several more mongrelman, but the heroes are easily victorious. Elaryan assumes the form of a frenzied dire ape, while Arthas uses Erastil's Fury to smite the servants of Baphomet. They leave a trail of broken bodies in their path. Searching the mongrelmen's camp, Elaryan discovers a potent new drug named demon dust , which he happily imbibes. More poweful than eye of angazhan , it grants the sorcerer great strength and vivid hallucinations. Arthas then locates a blood trail, which Elaryan says smells of elf, so they follow it. Deeper in the complex, they encounter a small maze of brick walls. As Elaryan (in ape form) is squeezing through the tight passages, a gang of babau demons appears, surrounding the two heroes and attacking viciously. Elaryan and Arthas manage to escape, but are grievously wounded. They decide to spend the night in the complex. Erastil's Fury is against the idea, pointing out that there is evil to slay, and a defender of good to rescue, but the bow is argued down by Arthas. The party retreats. Surprisingly, the night passes without incident. The two companions resume their search, only to find the complex is now oddly quiet, perhaps deserted. nonetheless, they press on. Eventually, they make their way to a subterranean shrine. In the first room, they find a jar full of mist, with a disembodied face floating in it. "Ask me any question, and I shall answer it," says the face. "Who are you?" asks Elaryan. "I am Tentagard," replies the face. "Ask another question." "How many questions can I ask?" replies Elaryan. "You can ask as many as you like," answers Tentagard, "but with that question, I am free!" The jar shatters, and Tentagard assumes his true form: that of a massive hezrou demon. Elaryan retreats into the safety of Arthas's magic circle against evil as the paladin fires arrows at the demon. Fortunately, Tentagard seems more interested in escape than in vengeance; the demon soon teleports away, leaving the companions alone in the shrine. In the shrine's main chamber, the heroes find the body of Aravashnial lying upon an altar, his eyes and heart removed. Evidently, whatever foul ritual the cultists intended has already taken place, while the party slept. The companions decide to return the elf's body to the Knights of the Pale. They drag the body all the way to the South Market district, where they locate the Inn of the Defender's Heart. The Inn has been fortified, and a small contingent of members of the City Watch guard the doors and windows. Inside, the Watch coordinates with local members of the Knights of the Pale in search and rescue operations. Arthas locates the captain of the local forces, a half-orc named Irabeth Tirabade. Captain Tirabade thanks them for their service, though she is disappointed that they were unable to save brave Aravashnial. She also fills them in on more details regarding the source of the Hellmouth. According to cultists that the Knights have interrogated, the Hellmouth was created by a massive device called the Mrathrach machine, built beneath Anestral City by the various chaos cults, then activated about a week ago. Since then, the center of town has connected directly to the Abyss, and demons have been spilling forth into the city. Worse, there is a rumor that the cultists are working on a ritual the expand the Hellmouth's influence, until it covers all of Anestral! Everyone who played gains 2,000 XP.
