We wanted to do more than just make it easier to create and update Community sheets, though: we wanted to make things fancy. Many Sheet Authors told us on the  Suggestions Forum  they wanted more fonts, so we added Google Fonts which can now be used in the sheet as well as programmed into Handouts, API scripts, and Chat outputs such as dice rolls. Thank you Roll20 developers!
Hooray!

There's instructions in today's release note for how to use Google Fonts, but basically you use the @import rule in your CSS to declare the font, and then you can call it in the CSS as a font-family. Please note that you can only have 1 @import rule, so to have more than one font, you'll need to separate the font names with a | symbol. And only fonts from Google Fonts are allowed at this time.

The Dungeon Master said: WANT! How do? In my case, Step 1: Patiently wait for character sheet community contributors to read whatever Stephanie said about "CSS rules".

Of course, that probably means someone will come along and tell my why "(insert font name here) is just so great everyone should use it because...", or maybe others are just as baffled as I am.  :p

There's a lot of mysticism in font choice. In the end it comes down to just a couple of principles: Make it readable. Make it invisible. Unless it is a big title or logo, chose something people can read easily and doesn't look odd or jarring enough that they see the font before they see the word. Sure there's a lot more to good design than that and a lot of choices within those parameters, but for a character sheet, quick and easy communication of information is top priority. tl;dr: Don't choose something ugly and you'll be fine.

I for one am glad this has finally been implemented...albeit a little too late for me to really be able to use, since my time working on character sheets is pretty much non-existent at the moment. :( As for why there are so many similar ones...different creators working from the same base font to modify for their own projects, probably...and in many cases they could be interchangeable. Sometimes there's a reason to choose one over the other...for example if the serifs are too long in one, but still want serifs, perhaps you go with a similar one that has slightly shorter serifs, and perhaps that's important to balance the composition, as a whole. The great thing about Google Fonts, though, is there are so many that you can likely find one to help evoke the mood you want on a character sheet, but as keithcurtis pointed, fonts are like salt...a little can go a long way, but really make the sheet pop with flavor. keithcurtis said: tl;dr: Don't choose something ugly and you'll be fine. Unfortunately, nobody's baby is ugly... ;)

What Keith said, plus also: ONLY use 1-2 fonts per Character Sheet (well maybe 3 including a logo or title). It is not a situation of trying to find a different font to fit every section. keithcurtis said: There's a lot of mysticism in font choice.
