Max said: Even the cautious Hamanap seems moved by these stories, her fine Egyptian features growing stony with righteous fury. Ering turns to Hamanap with a grave look on his face and takes her aside to make sure neither the slaves or the lizardfolk hear them. "We have almost ten prisoners, including a raidleader. I'm sure you'll agree that bringing them all back is not logistically possible. Looking at what these people have been through I would not feel comfortable in letting them go either." He sighs before arriving to his conclusion. "We could take Zurello back as a hostage, but I fear the other captives will have to be executed. Earlier you rightfully said that it wouldn't be right to pass judgment quickly, is their story enough to change your mind?"

Hamanap closes her eyes, takes a deep breath to steady her nerves, and opens them again. "I will want to question each of them in detail first. Each man must pay the debt of his own deeds, not those of his comrades. But for those guilty of banditry, I take no issue with the law of the land, and there are plenty of trees in the forest above." She says this last so grimly, you can almost see the bodies of the hanged lizardfolk swaying already. "After you and the others scout around a bit, we can attend to the questioning before we depart." A bit later... Josh said: well we got more gold , prisoners and people to take care of maybe we should head back to camp? "You guys have a camp around here? Down in the caves, or what?" Jargon asks curiously. Contra adds with a fierce grin, "If you need help guarding prisoners, I would be happy to assist. I have had too much of rest in that cell, and would dearly enjoy a trade of roles with these foul lizardmen."

how does one get blessed with the Blood of Osano-Wo , it'd be nice if the party was immune to xankoris's spell.
Well, this Howl of Isora is a modified one from L5R 4e. And that makes Blood of Osano-Wo become Ancestors Feat, which probably in L5R D20 book.

And that makes Blood of Osano-Wo become Ancestors Feat, which probably in L5R D20 book. Knowledge (history) or (religion) DC20 (Xankoris gets +10, it's common knowledge where he's from): Osano-Wo was a champion of the Crab clan in Rokugan, who after his death was apotheosized into the Fortune (Rokugani spirit-god) of Fire and Thunder. The Blood of Osano-Wo [Ancestor] feat means that he was an ancestor of yours and that his blood runs especially strong in you, granting you some fragment of his abilities. However, Ancestor feats can only be taken at character creation, since they represent an inborn talent rather than a learned skill. While this feat would usually only appear in people from the Crab or Mantis clans, it may occasionally emerge in unexpected places, so technically anyone with at least some human blood could take it (such as a half-orc, half-elf, half-dragon, tiefling, aasimar, fiendish or celestial human, etc). In the L5R d20 game, it's an 'advantage' rather than a feat, but you should probably expect a feat version for D&D 3.5 to show up on the @CatacombOptions twitter at some point...
You discussed hiding your camp more thoroughly with a permanent illusion by Xankoris, do you still want to try that? The next morning, Freeday the 14th of Harvester, Hamanap and Ering pray for they new spells they have gained access to (Hamanap through devotion and spiritual growth, Ering through rigorous study in his free hours). Before she begins her daily prayer, Hamanap asks the party, "I can pray for a spell to ward someone against death magic. Do we plan to return to the same entrance, and try to face that gynosphinx Erianna? If so, I could ask Bahamut for it." And will Rezinov or Xankoris be going with the raid team on today's attack?
Avariel: If we are feeling up for the challenge. I'm feeling a tad more comfortable in my own skin today, as though I'd be better able to defend myself from attacks...I'm not sure what it is, just a feeling, but it makes me a bit more confident that we might be able to deal with this threat. OOC: Do we know if Symbol spells allow SR? Hamanap gives Avariel a warm smile. "There is no better way to train oneself than the crucible of righteous battle. And I have no doubt that our lords are rewarding our leal service with greater blessings." After considering, she adds "I would also like to go destroy that Shrine that I consecrated yesterday." From Ering's Spellcraft check on them during the last session, he does know that symbol spells can be blocked by Spell Resistance. Oh, and I forgot to mention it, but, Hamanap also healed everyone fully before settling down to sleep, with most of the rest of her magic for that day. After Hamanap helps him find a suitable suit of armor from the scavenged sets, Jargon is eager to help you on today's raid. Contra, who's much less experienced, volunteers her services in guarding the camp at night, when her half-elven eyes will be most useful. "We've gathered quite a few freed slaves now..." Hamanap points out, looking over the bustling camp. "I'm worried all these people might attract attention if Zorall sends more of his children to patrol, like that destrachan. I suspect it was looking for us... Perhaps we should send some of our guards to escort a group back to the Waypoint ? I'm sure Leoavor can see about making other arrangements for them there."
"I say we take out the Gynosphinx. though I suggest we escort the prisoners/gold back home ourselves, using the travel time to have xankoris figure out erieannas sleep schedule then teleport back to that caged room and sneak in to take out unawares.

Jargon grumbles disapprovingly. Hamanap frowns, considering the idea as well. "So long as we use Xankoris's scouting method to ensure that this Erianna deserves an execution before attacking... ah, but if we left to escort the prisoners and freedmen, we would need to bring the whole camp and be easier to spot while traveling or risk leaving it lightly defended. Might it not be better strategy to send a smaller delegation..? What do you think, Lieutenant Colonel?" she asks Ering, a bit out of her depth in such military matters.

After a little chat with Vigil, Ering joins the discussion, the bird still happily bounces from his shoulder to his arm, occasionally pecking some of the dried fruit in the wizard's hand. "It is clear by now that Zorall's forces are not only aware, but actively looking for us. I fear that the flying destrachan will be the first of many scouts sent to find our camp, and if we learned anything from Zorall's... tastes, it might be any kind of creature, from a burrowing xorn to a stealthy shadow in the night." He pauses for a moment, looking at the freed slaves, the people following them and his soldiers. "We might be reaching a point where the risks outweigh the treasures gained and the destabilization we cause in their ranks. Our meeting with Erianna could be our last raid, at least until we can figure out a way to secure our camp." "And that is why I would wait a few more days to send them back the the Waypoint, I wouldn't want them to get spotted by some abomination in leathery wings without being able to defend themselves. I could Teleport them to our fort, but there is always a small chance of missing the destination by a few miles, and I will be able to move four at a time, including myself. It could work, and each person will also be able to carry part of the treasure back, but it will take a few days." " Teleporting into Zorall's caves is something I would highly discourage, the chance of mishaps is high, and strange artifacts in the dragon's vaults could make the Teleportation even more unstable. Our best bet would be to confront Erianna, hoping that her blood is not too tainted with evil. Her Symbols are something we should worry about. If the rooms are big enough I might be able to Read and Dispel them from a safe distance, but maybe the lizardfolk we just took prisoner might be able to tell us more about their placement and Xank could scout ahead, provided that his... Out of body form won't trigger the spells."
If we leave after taking out this gynosphinx, looking at what we got, I doubt we'll break even on the cost of that stone rod. unless we sold it back along with the other magic items we got. But i value my life more than gold I'm good to pull out of the fire.

But i value my life more than gold I'm good to pull out of the fire. Kraggan frowns and says firmly "If we haven't stolen enough from Zorall even to cover the cost of one magic rod, what that translates to is that we haven't hindered his war effort at all . The point of what we're doing here is not to gain treasure, but to make it too difficult for Zorall to continue his involvement in the Stone River War. There are still soldiers in there eager to raid the surface cities, and slaves hoping to be rescued. We need to commit to at least another half dozen serious raids before we pull out." She pauses for a moment to let this sink in, her frustration and worry for her comrades etched into the birchbark patterns on her skin, then adds "I agree, though, that we need to make sure our camp is more secure. Our raid team has been able to handle things inside, but having so many civilians up here is a liability. I think we should divide up our elite forces three ways: Xankoris, Hiskel, and some guards can escort most of our freedmen, livestock, and loot to the Waypoint in the wagon; Ering can teleport the prisoners ahead, so they have fewer chances to ecape; Avariel, Hamanap and I will stay here to guard the camp until your return, hunkering down to make our presence less noticeable from the air. During the trip, Xankoris can scout out Erianna, but I think we ought to attack elsewhere first anyway when you all get back, just to make sure they don't expect us back in the same place." "That sounds wise," Hamanap agrees, smiling down at Kraggan approvingly. "It is our duty to protect the lives of those we've rescued and those who serve us, not to leave them in harm's way; but just the same, a light blow against Zorall will only encourage his raiding to replace what is lost. Even if we cannot slay him, we must show him that attacking our towns carries a heavy price, one he will be unwilling to pay again anytime soon." "I'll stay here to help guard your camp," Jargon says. "If they attack it, I'd like a chance for some revenge on those bastards. How about you, angel?" he asks Rezinov. Axil puts in "I can stay as well. With heavy hitters guarding the camp, I might be of more use scouting out the entrances we've found... I'm quite good at stealth and deception, so if I go alone I can probably gather some useful intel on the current state of their preparations in advance of our next raid." Kraggan nods, and adds "Another thing I've been wanting to bring up is that during our last two raids there was too much discussion and chatter about whether to continue or withdraw while we were down there. We need a clearer chain of command in combat situations, so that we can strike fast and withdraw on each raid. We've been lucky so far, but sooner or later a patrol or reinforcements will come upon us while we debate and one of us will get killed. If I say we withdraw, we withdraw; if I'm in wild shape and can't speak, Ering can make the call. If anyone has a problem with this, speak up now, not when we're deep in enemy territory." Dawi said: Her Symbols are something we should worry about. "I would prefer Teleporting with the freed slaves rather than the captives. There is a low chance of the spell going off mark by a few miles, and if that were to happen I wouldn't want to be in an unknown location with prisoners that might become uncooperative. Not to mention the fact that they might not even be willing to be Teleported, and that would cause even more problems. I could even depart tonight, bringing Cassie, Aurora, and Hikaru, tomorrow I'll be able to come back for Lyle and eventually Contra or anyone else that might need to visit the Waypoint." Ering nods after Kraggan's observation and reflects for a few moments. "I won't speak against it as I've not seen you in a definite commanding position, but we should iron out some other problems." Ering looks at everyone. "Who will guard eventual prisoners? What should we do if we are retreating and don't have enough time to question them? How much should an incursion last?" Spellcraft: 39 (+2 when dealing with Necromancy spells, -5 with Evocation and Enchantment (not counted))
Avariel nods. "I am certainly alright with that arrangement." To the questions Ering poses, Avariel poses in thought for a moment before responding, "I am not sure if there's a real way to determine how much time is right without actually being down there, but I will concede that I'm not terribly clever and that there may be some pattern I'm overlooking."

Xankoris's ability to project his consciousness through the Void is similar to scrying , as far as you can tell, so he ought to be safe doing so... but perhaps it would be wise to shroud himself with his Deathmantle first, just in case. Further, if casts read magic before using his Sense Void, any symbols he sees through it (while the spell lasts) should be able to be identified with a Spellcraft check.

None evil will ever escape my blessed sight," emerged A holier-than-thou voice within Rezinov's telepathic range, this possibly is his usual tone when he talks with normal mortal beings.

Does Xankoris use his Sense Void to scout anyone else on Harvester 17th? Was Vigil instructed to wait at Base Camp's Garrison for Ering until he can teleport there, or has/will he come back sooner? When Ering teleports back to join the raid team on the morning of Godsday, Harvester 18th, he learns that Axil never returned from scouting the previous day... (Spot check: 18) Meditating, you reach out through the Void to focus on an orcish soldier bearing Zorall's sigilry. He barks orders at a ragged half-orc slave to hurry in the duty of rolling a barrel through a battle-scarred room... you see scorch marks on the floor, a straw-stuffed training dummy, and realize it's the training room where you fought Zurello's lizardfolk last week! The solder moves around in front of the slave, producing an iron key from his pocket to unlock a heavy wooden door. You hear a jingle as he opens it and walks inside, leading the slave, to deposit the barrel before Erianna. "Ma'am," he grunts in a salutatory fashion, nodding at the sphinx, before departing with the slave. On their way out, you can see that the door has a bell hanging on the inside of Erianna's room, which jingles again when they close it. After 10 minutes, her emerald eyes open, glazed and softly glowing, and she intones "You didn't return last night. Are you safe? Do you need a rescue? Hiskel, Avariel, Xankoris, and Ering have returned and we will raid today." She's quiet for a long moment, then the glow fades and she look grim. "He said that he was discovered, but managed to get away. He's pinned down deep inside Zorall's caves though, hiding while they hunt for him. He'll try to find a way out on his own, but it sounds like it's harder now that they're looking for someone in disguise."

so the current plan is to move on the harem then the fire temple, leaving the previous slaves to guard the captives? in that case at half health, out of spells and nothing but a dinky d6 crossbow hiskel will wisely opt to stay back with them. however on the bright Limars replacement just came in so i wont be sitting out . a white scaled kobold yipping an yapping in broken common "I Sja'renj help free tribe yes?? help traps gone yes!!" -no armor or weapons, just baggy peasant/slave clothes. the party now has a rogue if accepted.
So I guess everyone knows how Castle of Water work, but I haven't about Torrential Rain yet (the 4th level one that Xank intends to create) since it's quite hard to understand in IC, I decided to post in OOC style instead Description : This spell calls upon the fury of Osano Wo, the Fortune of Fire and Thunder, to unleash the full fury of the storm upon the area. As the spell is cast, dark clouds gather in the sky. If the spell is successfully cast, in two rounds the clouds begin to drop a relentless downpour of rain and the winds begin to howl. The storm created by this spell is much more intense than a natural storm, and though it is not directly damaging, it is useful for making everyone in a large area quite miserable. Between the omnipresent rain and the clouds blotting out sunlight visibility and movement rates are reduced by 75% in the storm. All ranged attacks have their effective range halved, and suffer a -7 circumstance penalty to hit as severe winds rip through the area. Melee attacks suffer a-2 circumstance penalty. All Spot, Search, and Listen checks have a -10 circumstance penalty. Most open flames in the area (candles, torches, lanterns, etc.) are snuffed out within the round. Depending on the size of the flame, this may take longer. A fire that threatens to burn down a kyuden (Rokugani Palace) may take upwards of ten rounds to be extinguished. A shugenja who successfully casts this spell has a 1% chance of attracting the attention of Osano Wo, who demands service of the shugenja in the form of a quest that must be completed within a year This spell may only be cast outdoors. BTW, those numbers you saw are still in consideration when it's done, some of them will be changed
So as the finale of the Stone River War arc approaches, I've come to a bit of an issue as a DM, and I wanted to see what you guys think. The problem is this: while raids like the one we did last week are an effective way to weaken enemy forces (albeit at considerable risk to you), they take a lot of prep before the game (which is a problem if I don't know whether you plan to do another one in advance) and might, I worry, get repetitive to play out. What I'm considering is this: if you guys decide to do more raids on the approaching army, how would you feel about just rolling some key checks and then me summarizing how they went based on your rolls and strategy, rather than actually playing them out like we did last session? Then either way, the next real battle would be the Storming of the Waypoint itself. I ran the idea by Shannon, and she seems quite keen on it, but I want to make sure the final part of this story arc feels fulfilling to everyone, since you all very much earned it.
Did seem like a lot for a fight that only lasted 6 rounds. I'm fine either way but if we play out the combat I suggest a smaller map 180 squared, hiskel will close it in walls of fire to keep away the masses and the others can focus on which every mini boss comes to tango.
This is certainly fine with me. Avariel would be right up in the thick of things, as he is confident in his ability to withstand harm (he has well over 100 hit points post- Aid and the damage reduction won't hurt either; plus, he is immune to fear and has very good saving throws). He would likely be making use of his Improved Sunder on the weapons of any of the important-looking folks, since losing their better weapons would certainly be costly for them (and Beacon is probably one of the highest-end weapons on the continent if my suspicions about the nature of magic items in your world are accurate, so he is unlikely to find anything better).
I'm also fine with both, Xankoris is not there yet anyway.

Rolling for the encounters seems like a good middle ground between handwaving and repeating, the only thing I wouldn't like is if someone died as a result of poor rolls; the raids are very dangerous but it just wouldn't seem 100% fair. I think our plan should be to focus on the important target, leaving supplies and common soldiers alone. Since most of our enemies are immune to fire and would straight up ignore Hiskel's attacks and walls Ering would suggest bringing Sja'Renj instead, but in the end it's Josh's decision. He would also ask Hamanap to send for Rezinov, informing him on the next attack.

Sure I'll send in Sja'renj. -would it be to much if hiskel provided them with buffs before they teleport? -if shes not going into combat she can hand out 21 spells of resistances(21 fire, 20 for the other energy types) or essence of dragon(60 dark vision, immune to draconic presence fear for 9 mins or 18 if Ssearth is used.) - an of course ering can borrow the lesser rod of enlarge spell. spellcraft 25 to know if the spell https://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/dismissal.htm would work on a half dragon elemental born on this plane.
Alright, thanks for all the input guys. We'll do some roll-and-summary raids this session, then. And sure Hiskel can buff them, that's part of the advantage of attacking this way. Hiskel doesn't think dismissal would work on any creature born on the plane where it's cast.
So as we wrap up this campaign's third major story arc, I have some announcements about the future. The first and biggest news is that Shannon will be taking a long-term hiatus from the campaign. It's something she and I have discussed before, as she really enjoys D&D but doesn't like the text-only online format that we're limited to by living in China. She wanted to at least finish out this story arc, and see the Wayfinders Kraggan created through their darkest--and brightest--hour. So for the foreseeable future, Kraggan will be NPC guildmistress, running the Wayfinders with Leoavor, though Shannon will still consult on a lot of her decisionmaking. Secondly, I want to discuss the timeline of the story. I expect there to be a few sessions of wrap-up while the dust of the war settles and the last few imminent plot threads are resolved. After that, I'm going to do a big timeskip of about 2 years, during which the powers new and old can consolidate their forces and strength, and the settlements along the Stone River can heal and grow. Rather than selling all the loot as usual, I think I would be easier if you guys simply made claims, took some coin each, and stored the rest in the Vaults, which will continue to grow slowly during the timeskip as well. I'd also like you to consider what your characters will do with their long vacation; for example, Xankoris may want to seek out a cure for his Taint and visit his home in the Kingdom of Provincia, while Leoavor plans to see his father in the Free City of Greyhawk and tell him that his mother was avenged. And finally, I'd like some feedback from all of you. Please take some time to consider the following questions, and PM me with your answers. I'll take them into account as we move into the next story arc for the campaign. What things do you like about this campaign? What things do you dislike about this campaign? What elements would you like to see more of? As of now, what is your character's primary goal?

Reminder: Rizdar wearing very fine, loose clothing, with a red cape embroidered in cloth-of-gold patterns.
