In the morning, Irabeth Tirabade summons the party down to her table in the main room of the Inn of the Defender's Heart. She has another mission for them, if they choose to accept it. One of her scouts has been watching the entrance to the cave the companions recently raided, and has seen some renewed activity. It appears the cultists are moving their outpost to a nearby, ruined library named The Blackwing. Irabeth asks the heroes to intercept the cultists before they have a chance to fully develop their defenses at the new location. They should take out as many evil-doers as possible, obviously-- but they should also be on the lookout for more information regarding the location of the wardstone, and the demons' plan to use it to expand the Hellmouth. The party agrees to the mission, and sets out at once across the ruined city. As they approach the smoldering remains of the Blackwing, they are attacked by two creatures from The Abyss known as howlers. The heroes make short work of the beasts, and investigate the library's ruins. They find a dead cultist, recently slain by the howlers, and a poorly concealed trapdoor covering a ladder down in to darkness. Descending the ladder, the companions discover a small group of connected caves. Soon, they are set upon by a small army of Baphomet's servants, including a cleric who summons negative energy elementals, mongrelmam rogues with spiked chains, and an archer named Wenduag who fires powerful magic arrows. Using advanced tactics, and coordinating their attacks with surprising precision, the companions defeat all of these foes, though there are a few close moments. After all of the cultists are defeated, the party searches the subterranean lair. Elaryan finds more demon drugs, and Eovan unlocks a chest that contains a wealth of gems and a mysterious sword. Perhaps most importantly, the companions discover a cryptic message to the cultist leader from someone named "SV". Before leaving the lair, the heroes decide to experiment with one last mystery: a huge demonic idol with ruby eyes. Nor climbs up the statue and attempts to remove one of the rubies, only to set off a magical trap that draws his soul in the ruby! Fortunately, Xhotl manages to pull the gem out of its socket and smash it, freeing the halfling. Moments later, Nor tries again, with the other eye, and is one again trapped. Xhotl frees him again, and the party leaves without further experimentation. Back at the Inn, the party shares their findings with Irabeth. She explains that the sword is Radiance, a powerful weapon once wielded by the legendary knight named Yaniel-- the cultists must have stolen it from the Knights of the Pale outpost where it had ben displayed. She also sheds some light on the identity of "SV"... Staunton Vhane was Irabeth's commander before the Hellmouth opened. The Knights had heard rumors that he had joined with the cultists, but it seems the truth is much darker: he has been directing their actions. Given that the note was written before the Hellmouth opened, and hints to fore-knowledge of it, he may have even had a hand in the destruction of Anestral City. Until now, Irabeth has been in denial regarding the depth of Commander Vhane's betrayal. now, she is crestfallen. Irabeth is also familiar with the "Grey Citadel" mentioned in the letter. The Citadel was a temple to Iomedae, and an outpost for the Knights of the Pale, before the Hellmouth opened. The Knights had thought it destroyed... but perhaps it survived, and is now serving as a headquarters for Baphomet's forces. Everyone who played gains 14,000 XP.
