Hi players and player-GMs!  I'm looking to recruit a couple wizard-lings for a voiced Monday-game at 8PM EST. Players new to the system are welcome, I've initiated many players to the mysteries of this system, I'll explain what you might be getting yourself into below!  The system is Ars Magica, a classic system (5e was released 2004), it is well known in circles as being *the* system for playing a magical caster of consequence. It's also known as a very heady system that is steeped in well-researched lore in a closer-than-not historical nature. Two other particulars about the system is that time is largely measured in seasons of three months as the system takes to heart the studious name of hermetic magic craft. The silhouette of a rabid scholar locked in his tower studying piles of books is taken to heart in these woods. The other feature is that the system plays with a Troupe style of play; It assumes that your magi-character will not be available to participate in every story (sometimes its not worth their time) so the system encourages you to make alternative characters to play as appropriate.  The setting is Europe, but in an alternative version that we call Mythic Europe, where we take all of folklore and historical philosophy and assume that they had it correct. Medicine relies heavily on astrological horoscope to treat you for disease, which are commonly brought about by diverging bodily humours; Or the disease was brought on by one of 36-demons. The year is 1220 AD , almost twenty years after the fourth crusade and the sacking of the christian city of Constantinople. Large swaths of Southern France has been excommunicated by the Vatican, leading to an increasing presence of demons that bring misfortune. In this year, St. Francis of Assisi will resign from leadership of the Franciscan Order and the Mongols have started their invasion towards the west, into the Khwarazmian Empire.  You are magi , of the Order of Hermes, a powerful order founded in the year 767. The Order was founded on two tools researched by Bonisagus, a genius of his time, a universal hermetic magic theory and Parma Magica (universal magic resistance). While other magical traditions flourished in their highly personalized mysteries, the Gift that allows one access to great magical power also engendered an aura of extreme distrust towards the Gifted, forbidding cooperation between any reasonable sized Gifted groups, which commonly fell to jealous infighting. Bonisagus' discoveries unlocked a system of teaching a wide variety of effects but his magical theory is the lesser gift than the Parma Magica, which protected the magi of the Order from each other's Gift and allowed true cooperation and mutual understanding untainted by corrupting jealousy (supernatural at least).  The game is set in Paris, France, the largest city in northern Europe, home to fifty-thousand souls, is strategically located at a crossing point of the River Seine, with an island in the river as its center. Supported by richly fertile farms, the city can support a dense population. While dominated by agricultural interest, the city supports a vast commercial district. While a Divine aura is present in a majority of the city, there are no doubt that Infernal auras dwell in the parts of the city that delve in lewd entertainments, sinful heresy and other vices.  The players have a strong hand on the shape of this game, we are in the final process of finalizing the Boons and Hooks that will make up the campaign and inform me, the Storyteller, of what kind of stories should pop up. That being said, I enjoy a slow burn of character creation and expect a month of character creation. I will be tracking this thread and my PMs for interested parties and I'm looking forward to contacting you for this game.  You should have a microphone and easy access to Roll20 and internet access. The plan is a weekly game on Mondays, voice and scheduling communication will be done via a Discord, a link given once I've confirmed your interest. I can supply pertinent resources for the game, some of the books are out of print. The game embraces a rabbit-hole approach to rules and you'll find that yourself half-believing that you'll know how to perform magic yourself after going through some source books. I have taught (and indeed such a player is in this game) people who are rather uninterested in reading rule books so I won't suggest that a love of rules is necessary but the books are written so well I do think there is a joy worth exploring in those pages.  For me , I've been running Ars Magica for a number of years now and greatly enjoy the system. Indeed, I'm the primary keeper of Roll20's Ars Magica sheet and a lot of my Roll20 Market pieces stem from my needs as an Ars Magica storyteller. I have a keen interest in exploring interesting systems and have found Ars Magica as a perennial favorite. If I was to assess my style or have a goal as a storyteller, I want to empower players to find their fantasy in a deep and self-standing setting. I am a fan of character flaws and characters infighting; I believe in cooperative storytelling, I don't believe that players need to warp the character's desires to stay in agreement with other characters. Its a thin thread to balance on but that's the goal.  Holler at me if you are interested, I look forward to hearing from you!
