Is there are some advice on running narrative chases scenes on Roll20? I mean, explicitly, not the typical D&D 'and you move 20 ft. in this direction on map' - only pointing to things like 'you run around port warehouse, then down the street, and to the square'. What, make a slide show of various locations we miss, but Game Master cannot predict them on advance?

I always 'run' chases (get it!) using theatre of the mind, as you rightly say you can't predict, with any level or certainty, what backdrops etc will be needed. You could set up a single rollable table of backdrops per locale and randomly roll that token to give the DM the next area passed through rather than them having to do it on the fly themselves... make it a mystery for everyone involved lol. Back to me, I tend to have a 'track' on the map to show how far each person is from the thing they are chasing, helps keep things orderly even if the rogue has taken to the rooftops!
I have used the theatre of the mind method, also I have done detailed maps across half a dozen pages with teleports between floors, It takes a lot of work, but the total confusion when they finally realize they have no idea how to get back to where they started is well worth it. In person it was never so satisfying, they always suspected you had set them up, on Roll 20 they know they did it to themselves.

Hey. The Roll20 Marketplace has the answer to your hopes and dreams. https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/gameaddon/3872/instant-chase-cards Instant Chase Cards product, made for Roll20! Add it to your game. Need to Create A Chase Fast? No problem! Here's Your Solution! The Concept The idea is simple. Draw six cards from the appropriate deck for the terrain you've selected: Forest, Mountain, or Urban. From those drawn cards are the chase events that will determine the flow and outcome of your pursuit. The Decks There are three decks, each containing a terrain chase challenge or event. You will find some duplicates of certain cards in each deck. This is intentional as that particular challenge is likely to come up more than once, such as crowded streets in a city chase or fallen logs in a forest pursuit. Forest As the name entails, you will use this for a chase that is set in a forest. Everything from balancing across deadfalls to river crossings. Mountains This next deck gives you challenges appropriate to mountains and hills, from cliffs to narrow ledges. Urban These cards help you build an exciting city chase, from cart races to rooftop runs. This goes well with Instant Story Cards
