[LFDM][5e] Solo player offering $20/hr

I am a long-time D&D player in my mid-40s, married with kids. Free time is small and precious to me. Good gaming, even more so. I am looking for a regular, long-running, pay-to-play 5e game with a custom character who will solo adventure through published and custom material in Roll20 with Discord. Let me unpack and explain that last sentence a little bit. Regular: at least one 4 hour session per week, exact time is up for discussion Long running: tens of months is the order of magnitude I hope for here Pay-to-play: I pay you $20 per hour of game, via paypal at end of session Custom character: built from scratch to approximate a party Solo adventure: yep. single player. I wish to selfishly indulge in the spotlight Published: I have not played through any official material, but it looks fun Custom: quality homebrew content is absolutely welcome Roll20: has options to present maps and other content, I enjoy seeing them used Discord: I have a good mic, hope you do too Anyhow. PM me if you are interested! Required Disclaimer: This game will require payment to the Game Master at a rate of $20 per hour via PayPal at the end of each session. Roll20 is not responsible for any payment transactions and cannot enforce any private arrangements. Edit: made it more clear I would pay you to DM for me.
Question came up and I see the title is not clear...I wish to pay you to DM for me.
I'm not an experienced DM but i know my stuff, would you be interested in maybe a trial session or 2 to see if we'd be good together?
The problem I foresee here is that 5E is pretty much not designed for single person parties. The action economy will bugger you hard, unless you also want to run at least three sidekicks.
A skilled DM could rotate a supporting cast of NPCs to bridge the action economy gap while retaining the appropriate level of danger and keeping the spotlight on Eddie's character. I immediately envision Thundarr, Princess Ariel, and Ookla or Robin Hood and a trio of Merry People for a more classic version.
Hey Eddie, This is certainly a unique post! Solo campaigns are often frought with balancing issues in 5e, and there are definitely some other systems out there that may be better suited to what you're after. However, that's not to say it can't be done and I have absolutely run 5e for a solo player before. A little bit about me, I am a professional DM based in the UK, but have quite the strange schedule and so am able to DM nearly any timezone. I have a tonne of experience running 5e oneshots and campaigns for groups, and I have managed to run a campaign for a solo player before too. If you would like to find out more about me and my services, feel free to check out my Roll20 profile where you can find out more about me and further links to my other social media. I write loads of homebrew adventures and am even beginning to publish my own modules for others to use, which I feel comfortable doing due to my wealth of experience. I feel pretty confident therefore, in being able to balance encounters well and give a wide array of skill challenges and memorable NPCs to any campaign; which I know would be even more important for a solo campaign. But, rather than guarantee anything I think it'd be best for both of us if (were you interested) I ran you through a free solo-oneshot first and you could get a feel for my abilities and style before you hire me. If you'd like to know more about me, my services, or my games, you can either follow the links in my profile, or feel free to message me directly! I have a bunch of testimonials I can share from other players and even recordings of some of my gameplay. Thanks again for the post, do let me know if I can give you anymore information, and I hope to hear from you soon. Cheers! -Billybob
Hell man I'd DM you fo free just for practice sakes... I'm a big time Ravenloft DM and convert a lot of material from 2e to Curse of Strahd and usually convert it all over to Pathfinder since that is my preferred game to DM. If your down feel free to PM me. I wouldn't mind runnin a solo campaign of some sort...maybe you can beta test some worlds for me or somethin.
Billybob, PM sent. Enjoyed your Eyes of a God Oneshot video. Gremlin, really appreciate the offer, but I was hoping for a bit more experience for this one. Thanks so much for responding! -Eddie
For transparency, the decision on who gets the gig will be made tomorrow evening, April 3rd. Appreciate everyone who's reached out!
Hi Eddie, I'm a DM with about thirty years of experience under my belt, I've been DMing since back in the 1980s on pretty much a weekly basis. I have my own world that's about twenty years old (real time), having a lot of history and flavor that's been accumulated over the years. I'll admit, I don't have much experience running solo campaigns (I haven't run one since second edition), but I think I'm up for the challenge. Are you looking to venture solo or would you be up to having an NPC group with you? If you were willing to venture with NPCs, would you want to control them (maybe something like FF tactics or Fire Emblem) or would you expect the DM to control all your allies and enemies? Also, is this more about a power-fantasy type game? Or did you want a challenging game that presents a dangerous world and could lead to character death if poor decisions are made? I'm also curious to know why you prefer a game free of other players. Is there anything in particular that drove you towards that decision? Here's some info on my world in case you wanted to take a look at it. Not all the stories are written by me, but there are descriptions of the custom sub-races, places, and my own custom rules for my regular weekly games. Let me know if you have any questions. https://the-world-of-gaian.obsidianportal.com/wikis/main-page
DM Dragon, PM sent. -Eddie
That's a grueling schedule - should be an interesting experiment. Good luck!
This made me think of a system that could be used for a single player... i think i came up with something that would be able to balance it out. Usually i use it for boss monsters, but i think it could be flipped and applied to players. You'd be much stronger than a normal 5e pc, but that is sort of a requirement when looking to run as a solo player. I have the beginnings of a campaign starting to swim around in my head. Send me a message if you're interested, as of now I'm free on Monday nights, but there might be more openings in the future.
When I read the OP, I instantly thought about when I used to play WoW and people would offer gold to get a high level toon to solo them through instances.
DMadness, you are onto my experimental method: building a PC using the CR rules, keeping CR=level. Also, appreciate the interest, but I'm several stages into the hiring process and not looking to add more right now.
Hi Eddie! I'm a DM who likes to focus on RP and humor in D&D. I invite you to check out my One-Shot. If you like my style of DMing, I'd love to run your game. If you're interested, please don't hesitate to reach out!
Thanks, Asa. If something changes, I'll look you up.
