Discord Info: Floris#0746 Character Idea: Name: Rook Age: 55 Race: Half-Orc Class: Fighter (Banneret) Alignment: Lawful Good Background: Soldier Backstory: Born in the slums to a penniless deadbeat family, Rook quickly learned how harsh the world could be for he was put to work soon as he was able and was met with little love or care in return. His parents were immense gambling addicts thus it didn't take long before the debt collectors came knocking to their little shack taking whatever worthwhile goods they were able to find not to mention that Rook's parents vanished that night perhaps they fled or were kidnapped. Regardless, After that night he became an urchin on the streets with nowhere to go and he had to survive on his own for even the other strays avoided him because of his orcish blood. It were a treacherous couple of months filled with begging, thankless jobs and sheer survival that unfortunately wasn't enough for winter had come. With no roof above his head Rook's days were numbered but as he was cowering on the cold stone of the city streets an elderly human stranger approached his gaunt withering frame and unlike the many others that simply walked past he took pity on the child in fact he carried Rook with him to his home where he was fed, cleaned and clothed. But this wasn't just any regular homestead for this was a castle of a noble house, it turned out that this elderly stranger was part of a noble family called the Hylands. The elderly stranger introduced himself as Sir Tobias Hyland and with a sprightly smile told Rook that from this point on he was his squire. While confused Rook certainly wasn't going to say no to such a captivating offer although it was more of a proclamation if anything. The squire life wasn't all sun and rainbows however for Sir Tobias was a strict as well as demanding mentor but at the same time was caring and kind thus quickly becoming Rook's true parental figure in life. Through intensive training, discipline and guidance Rook promptly became an accomplished squire once he reached his late teens, Sir Tobias' however reached his venerable years also his health was declining and on his deathbed told Rook why it he took him in all those years ago.. It was partially out of kindness but what he truly wished was someone to pass his teachings and legacy onto, his family always had been more obsessed with political power as well as money grubbing but he believed there always needed to be a proper knight defending the family line however since he had no children of his own or relatives that shared his views he turned towards Rook. With his dying breath he pleaded Rook to become a knight and protect House Hyland till his dying breath, to which Rook instantly agreed for his feelings of gratitude and love he felt towards his mentor couldn't be expressed in words. After his passing Rook offered his services to House Hyland directly whom reluctantly agreed mainly out of respect for their uncle's dying wish but they had no intention of granting him a knighthood of any kind. Rook joined the house's guard regiment and served faithfully for many years all the while pursuing this knighthood but the Hyland family stubbornly worked against him in this matter for he wasn't of noble blood not to mention an half-orc. While frustrating he didn't condemn or blame them for anything for he intends to keep the oath he swore to Tobias regardless of the circumstances. It looked like the rest of his life would be spend in these castle walls but that all changed for there were forces at work that planned to remove the Hyland Family from power and on one dreadful night these plans came to fruition the castle was besieged by assassins that slaughtered many of the Hyland line while others were captured alive. Rook tried to withstand this assault all the while protecting the family but failed miserably and was mortally wounded only surviving by the skin of his teeth as faith would have it. Once he awoke the castle was nothing but rubble and there were no survivors in sight. He had failed in everything he promised himself to uphold and became filled with despair, shame and sorrow. But he wasn't broken.. not yet and could still try to uphold the lessons he'd been taught by doing what little good he can and perhaps if possible claim his long eluded knighthood. (Nothing is set in stone for this backstory, I just wrote this in the spur of the moment.. I have no expectations for you to do something with the backstory, I mainly wrote it for myself. :>) Character Image:
