If they declare that that they want to look around, then you can choose to have them roll to GM. They will see the result, but none of the other players will. If you establish table etiquette of the players not announcing their rolls and not reacting based on the roll, then the other players will not have any inkling of how things went. Im not a fan of passive perception and do not use it, Im old school and think there should ALWAYS be an element of chance to a perception check. I just dont want them to know what most skill check rolls actually are, and while my group can be trusted to RP, the mystery is much better. =)
