Nameplates on map layer for Icons?

So I have a world map that has loads of locations hidden to the players on the GM layer. As players discover locations I move it over to the Map layer. I'm trying to figure out a way for the nameplates of the icons to be seen by players.  I keep the icons on the map layer so I can't accidently move them, but is moving them to the icon layer the only way players can see nameplates? I'm sorry if this is confusing. Thanks!

Only tokens on the Object Layer have their Nameplates displayed.  If they are on the Map Layer, they won't show their Nameplates, or their Bars or Bubbles, Token Markers, etc. Using the Text Tool to add the name is probably the most effective way of getting a name to show on the Map Layer.  You can do that ahead of time and place them on the GMLayer.  This has the added benefit of giving you more control over the font and color.
