Why can't you post spells from the compendium into chat?

That doesn't explain exactly what you are trying to do. You can copy the text from a spell and paste that into chat. Or you can cast a spell and the effects and/or description will appear in chat. If you are asking, "Can I search for a spell in the compendium and click something to send it from there directly into chat", no that 's not possible. You also can't open the compendium page for a spell and press "Show to Players", since that only works with characters and handouts. You could open the compendium page and right click on the spell name in its table of contents (probably item 2) and copy the URL. That could be pasted into chat and players could click on it to open the compendium page in their own browsers. It will even show up in the same window as if they had clicked the compendium entry itself. For instance, the URL for fireball is https://app.roll20.net/compendium/dnd5e/Spells%3AFireball?sharedCompendium=4927432#toc_2 That same URL will work inside or outside of game.

Because spells on the compendium are not stored in a macro format to go into chat. Usually, spells require interaction with a character sheet for caster level, caster stats, etc., so just displaying a spell in chat wouldn't be useful for any that scale in any way. They are setup to create a handout if dragged to the tabletop so that you have something in the journal to reference if you want that.

Derp. I forgot you could drag them to the VTT to create a handout of it. That could be shared with the "Show to Players" button, yes. But again, it wouldn't go to chat.
