Editing an NPC token and in Basic and Player Permissions I turn OFF the nameplate. Save changes, exit out. And in about 1 second, the name pops back on. Go in to edit the character again, and all the boxes are checked again that I had just unchecked! What's up?

I'm no master, but do you have the AuraTint API script? I've had trouble with it overriding my own options before.

Good guess!! Yes I do!  Hmmm... that sucks EDIT... I found the setting to turn it off! Thanks (hopefully it works!)

Well... it works sometime. There's a setting for "PCs see all NPC names" - YEs/NO/OFF... if I turn it off, the name setting work for about half my NPCs, but for the other half,  the name still keeps turning on!

OFF means it doesn't automatically change the setting. If you want to remove the names, set it to NO. If you want to be able to show a name then you can set it to OFF and it won't force update it to YES or NO. Otherwise it will just override any change you make to whatever the setting is.

Yeah, I set it to OFF, so I could choose ("good" NPCs I want the names on, "bad" NPCs or monsters, I want the names off) - so I put the setting at OFF... it still puts the name on 50% of them.
