Macro template help

Hello! I'm a newbie. I've created a few macros that I find useful in a 5e game (we don't use character sheets or tokens.) For example: "&{template:default} {{ name = Maelor Acrobatics Check }} {{ = [[1d20+3]] }}" My macros used to look like: "/roll 1d20+7 vs AC Maelor rapier attack" But then I learnt how to use the default template! I understand now that the first part defines the template, then any part after that, fits into the template. Starting with the title, or "name", then all the rows after it. And every part has to be in double {{ }}'s. and that [[ ]]'s define rolls. And that = splits collums. My question is, how do you change the template? I've looked all over online and most macros require you to have a token selected or link to a character sheet. Which seems to complicate things. Plus I don't know the purpose of the vertical pipe "|". I am tring to use the template in the "pathfinder (simple)" character sheet, as I use that in another game and I like the look of it. But when I change &{template:default} to &{template:pf_simple} or &{template:pf_attack} or &{template:pf_generic} nothing happens. The only thing that looks slightly like what I want it to, is when I put &{template:pf} at the start of a macro. But then it's just a blank title bar. I find the roll20 guides very dense and not very helpful for a beginner, such as this one https://wiki.roll20.net/Macros/Pathfinder_Examples Or this one, https://wiki.roll20.net/Macros And I didn't really read this one as it didn't seem to be what I was looking for, https://wiki.roll20.net/Pathfinder_Official Any help or clarification would be appriciated, Jack

The default template is part of Roll20 in general and is available in all games. All other roll templates are part of character sheet code. If you have a character sheet assigned to your game, then any templates that are built into that sheet will be available. If you don't have a sheet assigned, then the default is all you have access to.
So if I’m in a game that uses a character Sheet, can I create a macro that doesn’t link to the character sheet or use any values from it, but does use the same template as the character sheet? Or a macro that works without having my token selected?

If the sheet in your game has a template (or multiple templates), then it will be able to be used in that game. Whether you need a token selected or are doing attribute calls has to do with how your write your macro. The templates are just a way to organize and display information in chat, so they don't usually care whether you are using attribute calls or not for your macros.
Do you know where/how I’d be able to find the character sheet template? And how to use it in a macro?

If you're not using any sheet at all in your game (as in your first post), you won't have any other templates available. If you switch to using a sheet, which you can do in the pre-launch Game Settings, the logical place to start would be the 5E sheet. The templates available are listed here . You cannot mix and match though, you can only use a single sheet per game.
Sorry, I should have been a bit clearer. In my other game we are playing pathfinder and using the "pathfinder (simple)" character sheet. If I wanted to create a simple macro using that template, in that game, where would I find that character sheet template and how to add it to a macro?

I don't think that sheet has a wiki page, so you would need to make a roll from the sheet, put your cursor in chat, and hit the up arrow. That will give you the code used for that roll. You can do that with various rolls from the sheet to see how they are structured, since there may be more than one template. You can also look up the character sheet code on the Roll20 character sheet repository on github. If you are familiar with html, you can see how the template(s) are set up for the sheet there. It may be labeled as Pathfinder - Cazra (or something like that) on github.

EDIT: ninja'd! I don't play PF so not familiar with the sheet, but I'm assuming you can roll an attack or check by clicking something on the character sheet. After you do that, click in the chat window (where you would normally type stuff) and press the UP arrow on your keyboard. This should bring up the "macro" text that was used to do the roll, using whatever template the sheet uses. Copy that text into a new macro and now you have a starting point for customization.

Hi, that's what I would be interested too. We are using the AD&D 2nd Edition Character Sheet, and how do I find out, which template it is using and how do I activate it instead of the default template? Please disregard, seems like that sheet doesn't have any templates...

Wow! I think you guys cracked this wide open for me, thanks! "make a roll from the sheet, put your cursor in chat, and hit the up arrow." - Thanks for that Kraynic, but I was moving the cursor all over the chat window looking for an arrow to pop up somewhere! "click in the chat window (where you would normally type stuff) and press the UP arrow on your keyboard." - And David M. helped me figure out what you meant! Thank you all, I think I can fiddle around with the character sheet template now. Thanks :-)
