Newbie LFG D&D Next/Pathfinder GMT Weekday Nights

Hiya, I am 28 years old and have never played a tabletop RPG before but am looking for group playing D&D Next or Pathfinder. My knowledge is limited to what I've seen on Acquisitions Inc. (live D&D Next games at PAX) on Youtube and filling out a character sheet for a Level 1 Human Wizard using the Pathfinder Hero's Handbook. It took me a few hours to work through that >_< but I did enjoy the process, so hopefully that's a good sign. I am available on Saturdays and Sundays between 7pm-12am UTC+0 (GMT). I would like to play a one shot first to see if I like the system. If no one shots are available I would like to join a weekly or biweekly game with folks that are more than happy to get this noob into RPG.

Hey, i am 25 years old with similar rpg experience in a utc +2 time zone. There so many newbie players here that there aren't enough dms to fill all the possible games. Maybe we should somehow make our own game with a newbie gm as well?

Yeah, that's what I'm noticing on roll20 and mythweavers. The ratio for PC to GM is like 50:1?!?! XD I'm not a confident narrator to begin with so I think starting off as a GM would be a daunting task for me. Perhaps someone can step up to take that GM role (with the understanding that it's a learning process) or a veteran GM can offer support for our initial setup?

Maybe some kind of premade adventure. I know pathfinder has some. It should be easier to dm? I could dm it, but English is not my first language so i don't know if i could manage it.

What are the premade adventures called? Is it part of the Pathfinder books or user made content?

This would be regularly played at GMT weekdays? I think I could be free for it on a Tuesday or a Thursday... Yeah, from what I've heard, Pathfinder has some great premade adventures and even full all-level campaigns (adventure paths). I think I actually have a copy of a fair number of those adventure paths. However, I'm a newbie to pathfinder and would also rather love to play (I've done maybe one store session once, with a gunslinger, and loved it, but most GMs won't let you play a gunslinger in the campaign coz it doesn't "fit" the setting). I do have some DMing experience with 3.5 and 4e. Just not with Pathfinder, which has some pretty distinct variations to its rules I probably wouldn't be familiar with. Thing is, I already DM one game on roll20 for 4e, I don't know if I can shoulder learning a new system on top of that as well as DMing it.

Well, we could definitely do those modules too, if we could find a DM. I just happen to have paid pdfs of most the adventure paths from Pathfinder lying around one of the computers here when my brother bought them a couple years back, then left them here when he moved out. But yeah, trying out one of the free ones to start would be good. Just don't know if I have the time to DM a second campaign...and I'd really rather be a player, heh.

Kramb - cool I'll have a look at these modules. Are these considered one shots? And approximately how long does it take to go through one? Joe - I actually have no idea when this will be played. I meant to write weekends on the topic subject but somehow managed to write weekdays. Ultimately, I'd like be a part of a group that plays regularly whether its weekday or weekend. Concerning which edition will be played, I was looking forward to the D&D Next rules since its not bound to a grid system. I like the idea of playing using theater of the mind. This probably means that it will be less about tactical gameplay but I am more interested in the roleplay component anyway.

Ah, you prefer Next as opposed to Pathfinder? The thing with Next is that it isn't completely out yet, so people are playing according to the playtest rules, but yes, it can work fine without a grid. TBH, most editions of D&D and even Pathfinder can work without a grid, as long as people are fine with stepping out of the combat ruleset and not arguing DM rulings on the roleplayed actions. The grid is generally more of a nice thing to have... Though, the biggest thing roll20 offers IS the grid, heh. But yeah, I rather like the roleplay aspect more myself. I'm actually not able to play weekends though, as I have other commitments during those days on most weeks...

Those modules could take like 2 - 3 sessions I think. Though i am not sure. I think grid system is optional even in pathfinder. I don't know anything about dnd next. Are the rulebooks even released yet? Regular group sounds fun but somebody will have to be the dm. I could be a gm if we will not find anyone, since i know a couple of those modules. But I want to be a player in at least 1 game to see how everything works... For me weekends or weekdays depend on week by week basis.

Next really lets you depart from using grids/miniatures, however Pathfinder is almost easier to play when you do use a grid for simplicity. I'd be happy to learn them through DMing/playing with other new players. I suggested that I would (try) run a first one off session in Pathfinder, maybe from the Beginner Box or maybe one of Piazo's one off modules. Some of their earlier modules are really great. I'd suggest we establish a weekday and get together to get to know one another/discuss what we'd like to play and I'd happily try and DM something and take it from there.

The rulebooks are released in stages over the summer. According to leak "a starter set will release for $19.99 on July 15th, with the Player's Handboko releasing a month later on August 19 for $49.95." I only prefer D&D Next right now because I've seen how it is played. However I don't mind Pathfinder as an option because their content is very user-friendly and has already helped me to create a character. If D&D Next provides user-friendly instructions and worksheets for character creation, I'll probably focus more on that in the future (assuming there are people interested in playing it). I suppose the best available option at the moment is the Pathfinder Beginner Box.

Looks like we sort of have a group of interested people now, between that other thread and this one. I guess...deciding when to talk would be the next step. To be honest, we could probably do it now, unless one of us has somewhere to be, heh. This is a rare weekend where I'm actually free and don't have somewhere to be.

So it looks like we're going to go with Pathfinder and the Core Rulebook. Players that have come on Skype to discuss so far include myself, Joe, and Kramb. We are still looking for a few people so post if you are interested. We are most likely going to start with some premade pathfinder module. Newbie players are welcome since all of our group are kinda new to this. We will try to use pathfinder core rulebook only, but if you want something specific from other books we can negotiate. We will decide on playing time via skype chat.

guys im really interesed to join if you are still looking for players but im a total newbie when it comes to pathfinder but i do have DnD 4E and 3.5 expeirence and im a quick learner of the rules too if you guys are willing to still take on a new players
