[LFM][GMT-6][Various Games][Various Times] Interest Check: Weekly One Shots, GM Circle, Building a Sub-Community

tl;dr – Reviving a group to play one-shots that aren't DnD 5e, let people try out being a GM with others who can provide useful feedback, & build a sub-community of people who get along. Different days: Mon or Wed (5:30~10pm) or Sun (12pm~10pm). Other GMs willing to run on other days would be great. I want to play more games. Recently, Roll20 has had more opportunities recently than real life. However there are issues: imbalance of players to GMs, imbalance of DnD 5e to everything else, and (same as IRL) it’s hard to find people to play with who are compatible as a group. I could either complain or keep trying to do something about it. First, before the pandemic complicated my life, we set up the group and ran some one-shots . This gives people the chance to play something different or play a game they like again. It also gives us the chance to play with new people & see how well we get along. I have a long list of games for this. Earlier we ran Dungeon World, Fiasco , Old-School Essentials , and Index Card RPG . We’ve also done some Osprey wargames: Gaslands and Rangers of Shadowdeep . Long term, I’d love to get a steady game or two going. Nobilis , Umerican Survival Guide / Crawling Under a Broken Moon , and Traveller have been on my wishlist lately. Second, let’s find people who want to try GMing a game but haven't done it. Some folks are self-conscious (we all are). Some worry that they won't be any good (nobody starts at pro level, like any skill it needs practice). Some have tried and had people lose interest (you ask if players liked the game, they say "yeah" but then never want to play your games again). I still want to get some games going that can be GM-less, something with strong player agency like Ironsworn or Fiasco . Maybe something rules-light to learn general GM stuff without getting bogged down in rules -- old school Basic DnD or OSE or Dungeon World . I’d like to have multiple GMs run for the same players. Take turns running but with players you can be comfortable with. Maybe Ironsworn -- since it doesn't need a GM -- and Basic DnD or OSE -- since the rules are so easy. Maybe run The World's Largest Dungeon but it's DnD 3e & I’m not sure how to make it work well. Maybe try to do the Dungeon World short campaign Last Days of Anglekite again. Maybe The Traveller campaign Pirates of Drinax . Third, I want to find more people who I like playing TTRPGs with . Finding people to play interesting games with can be hard. Finding people to play with who aren't complete muppets is really hard . So let's play some one-shots. Find people you like without committing to a whole campaign. Take a chance running a game or two -- it's more work than playing but it's different, like being a coach instead of a ball player, or getting to write a story and not just read other peoples' words. That’s kinda long but I think it gets everything out there that I wanted to say & ask. My life's always in flux but I have time most weeks on Mondays and Wednesdays (about 5:30 PM to 10 PM CST) and Sundays (afternoons). Who's in?
Not familiar with any of the games you mentioned except Traveller (never played, but would be interested), Fiasco (from seeing it on a Tabletop episode), and I have heard of Nobilis but cannot recall anything I might have heard about it. But I interested in trying new systems. Even if I hate it, as long as I can identify why I hate it, I've learned something to help me design my own system. I have GMed, and on roll20, too. My hurdle to getting back in is finding players who want to play something that I want to run, rather than whatever 5e mass-produced campaign is currently popular. I posted with a bunch of ideas I have for games I want to run, but after a bit over a hundred views of that post, there have been no responses. But one idea was just to do some one-shots. Having a group ready would be nice, and rotating GMs would be nice, since I could play more often than I could have prep-work done for a one-shot. I admit to a fondness for some rather heavy game systems, but I do like some rules-light stuff, too. (Previously on roll20, I was running Mazes & Minotaurs.)
I'd be interested in this. Enjoy trying out new ttrpg systems and one-shots are a good way of doing that. Also be okay with trying out gming. Have never gmed before but willing to give it a go now and then.
@DanH I missed your post last week in the general forums. I've wanted to give Feng Shui a try for years. I played some Shadowfist back in the day but that's as close as I've gotten. I've never played Mazes & Minotaurs but it looks in-line with other games we've played. I usually send players to the Tabletop Fiasco episode -- it shows the game at its best, as long as you don't hate Wil Wheaton. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXJxQ0NbFtk I've never ran Traveller but the Pirates of Drinax campaign has tons of material & might be good for an open-table kind of group. Nobilis is odd. I want to have players with a matching mindset for it... https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Nobilis @MarkM One-shots have been what we do best. Letting new GMs take the reigns is another of our goals :)
I am absolutely in! This would be a fun way to experience a variety of different kind of games and setting up times for one-shots is always a lot easier than for regular games. And a group like this could help to find a group to play non-one-shot games regularly as well.
Sounds good. I'll send an invite :)
Sounds very cool,so here are the games that i would be willing to play or Dm Marvel heroic Numanara Conan 2d20 Shadow of the demon lord... Savage worlds list. aTour of darkness Goon 50 Fathoms... Necessary evil.. Rogue trader... I would love to give it a go.. By the way. I also like playing and running Dungeon crawl classics and mutant Crawl classics. Please i do not wish to run all the time i would prefer to play. So p.m. Joe.
I've only read Numenera but have never gotten it to the table. My IRL group used to play a lot of Savage Worlds and I ran it a bit. In the Roll20 group, we have at least one more player who has played it quite a bit. Necessary Evil is another one that I've read but not played. I've only ran a couple sessions of DCCRPG but would have ran more if Real Life TM hadn't interfered. I flipped through Mutant Crawl Classics but didn't get pulled in. However, I'd love to run Umerican Survival Guide / Crawling Under a Broken Moon . I think we can find some games in common!
