About the Campaign I shall be running a 5E Descent into Avernus campaign on Saturdays at 9 PM EST. The first session is likely to start on the 8th or the 15th of August, and all characters start at level 1. The campaign is run on Roll20 coupled with a voice channel in Discord, with video not used. I enjoy using battle maps, ambience music and journal entries to supplement a session, as well as making modifications to written modules that may better weave a player's character into the story. Generally speaking, I run RP-heavy campaigns with an aversion towards endless and repetitive combat. My battles and encounters tend to be intended as set-piece battles with meaningful story elements, which means that a single large encounter is my go-to rather than a string of small and 'grindy' ones. I do not track experience points, but instead simply level up characters based on story milestones. For an example of how I do it, I once wrote up a short summary of a Strange Aeons session I ran some time ago - the link to it is here . I generally run my campaigns based on the rule of cool and am happy to relax the rules or outright just make them up. Are there specific rules for climbing a mastadon's legs, leap over to its back and sheathe your sword into its skull? I don't know. Maybe. Make an atheletic check to climb, a dexterity saving throw to maintain your balance and an attack role with an automatic critical if you succeed. If you fail the climb or balance rolls, you fall and take falling damage. I am not about to stop the flow of the session to check the rules, and I reward creative risks by making sure that there's a good pay-off if you succeed. That said, the rules as written of course sets the default basis of our play. Players & Expectations Currently, I have three trusted friends who are players in the campaign, and am looking for two more to join us. We are a friendly bunch, and we include a complete newbie to 5E, so do not be too worried if you are new to 5E's rules. I am happy to guide and help you through character creation and the rules. It is free to join the campaign - I do not charge for it, and I am delighted to run a campaign for the sake of fun. However, I have strict expectations as to reliability and attendance. I put in quite a fair bit of effort into a session's preparation, and having people bail on the campaign or being absent without warning is unacceptable to me. You should only express interest if you are certain that you can make it regularly on Saturdays at 9 PM EST for the months to come. A session lasts 3 to 4 hours. I strongly encourage players to put effort into their characters. In the past, I have had players write character journals, do newspapers, and the likes, and I highly encourage and generally reward such efforts. Character deaths are rare in my campaigns: negative consequences tend to come in the form of loss and transformation, be it failing a goal, losing valuables, or being twisted in some ways. I discourage switching characters willy-nilly. Finally, I have LGBTQ players in my campaigns and I do not tolerate OOC discourtesies - I also insist on no or minimal discussions of RL and political events. We are here to have fun. Be courteous, be helpful, don't be a dick and don't hog the spotlight. About Descent into Avernus For those unfamiliar, Descent into Avernus is a published 5E module set in the Forgotten Realms. I have made extensive edits to how it begins, and those familiar with it might find the start somewhat different. Without entering into spoiler territories, the story is centered on the cities of Elturel and Baldur's Gate, and follows the consequences of an infernal bargain made decades ago. As the rotten price is reaped, the player characters must undertake a desperate quest to save a stolen city - a quest that shall lead them to descend into Avernus, the first plane of the Nine Hells. The themes of the campaign center around choices, consequences, temptations and redemption. Characters should have ambitions and flaws of their own, and players should consider what their characters themselves desire. That said, I expect maturity and comity: do not create a character that is disruptive to the campaign, regularly sabotages the story or generally makes it difficult for other players to have fun. If you are interested, please drop me a message or add me on Discord at Zarquon#0001. Thank you!
