Easier NPC creation?

I'm trying to fill out the ranks of a small band of resistance fighters for my party to meet with and I was wondering if there was an easier way of creating NPCs through roll20 than using an outside NPC creator and manually putting in all of the stats and traits and attributes.  This would exclude using the compendium to click and drag premade NPC stats to a blank character sheet.  Thanks!

What makes the outside NPC creator easier? That would make suggestions more useful.
Oh, it's just randomized and fills in stats, skills, spells, feats, etc. for you. I'm using this  creator, but mostly I'm trying to avoid using the charactermancer for NPCs.

Interesting. A generator could certainly be built using an API script. The trick would be in avoiding the use of any IP-controlled data (which that generator apparently does not do--I'd avoid further links to it, at least on this forum). Here's an example of something I wrote for the Shaped Sheet a few years ago, using ChatSetAttr (which is available in One Click installation). You could use an approach like that.

If you don't want to go the api route, wouldn't it be easier to just create an npc from the compendium (commoner, bandit, mage, druid, gladiator, guard, noble, priest, scout, thug, tribal warrior, veteran, etc.) and edit it to reflect what your generator spit out?  I don't play 5E, but those are all npcs I saw in a scan of the Monsters category of the SRD compendium in a test game.  If you own 5E content on Roll20, there might be more.
The NPCs in the MM and other various 5e sourcebooks are difficult for me to adjust to player levels. I'd like for the NPCs to be nearly PC level. Really I'm making lower stat and lower level players to ensure I can't mess up the balance of having a CR-based NPC with level-based players.
