Do old maps/artwork need to be deleted?

Can old maps in a campaign affect load times?   I'm getting to the end of my homebrew campaign and sometimes have lag issues when loading maps. Will Deleting or Archiving the old maps make any difference to this at all?  Or does it just make the map scroll bar a bit more manageable?

Deleting should, archiving won't.
Archived maps, characters, and handouts still contribute to the memory footprint for your game and may slow it down if you archive too many things. Archiving is an organizational/display tool only.
Thanks for the replies.  I deleted a few of the larger old maps and art items and that seems to have helped.
