Fog of War + already discovered areas

Roll20 could use another layer of fog of war for already explored areas just like in computer strategy games (Age of Empires etc.) A tool that adds and removes this fog of war is really useful for situations when NPC units leaves the immediate encounter area. A Gm might still want to keep track of a unit when it disappears in line of sight (he might want to bring the unit back to sight from a completely another direction later!). The problem with the regular fog of war tool for this is that it hides also the explored area itself. I, personally, would still like to keep the players aware of their explored surroundings but in case of line of sight issues, I would like to be able to hide the movement/changes in these areas.
Hi Matti I think this https://twitter.com/roll20app/status/201034033226989569 will *probably* perform the feature that you're looking for :)
hello hmm.. my issue is not so much about the physical lighting of areas, but more about line of sight concealment of units (in areas already discovered). After all, units that move out line of sight are still concealed from PCs' eyes even if the area was well lighted.
still.. I'm looking forward to these dynamic lighting effects :D
it really sounds like a good idea, and maybe that every character have their own vision it will be great too
automatic line of sight for every character would be of course awesome but I think that would be too difficult to do at this moment. Still I dunno, the developers keep surprising me :D For now, I'm just interested in an easy tool that allows the GM to conceal the line of sight manually.
JUST had this come up in a game last night. Huge dungeon with a patrolling army...They need to keep track of where they are without getting lost, but I can't just leave everything revealed because then it's impossible for a patrol to catch them by surprise. I'm ALL for this. Seconded and such. I just want them to still see the map, but not the tokens currently there.
Not exactly what you're suggesting, but you could just drop the unseen tokens onto the GM layer and move them around from there.
Thanks for the tip Sidney, that actually help a whole lot. Didn't think about that I could simply drop the tokens to the Gm layer and then track their movement. That resolved a major part of my concern. However, this option doesn't communicate to the players what areas are out of their line of sight. Of course the players could always ask the GM what areas they don't see anymore, but it would be perhaps easier just to mark it on the map. Also i would like to ask all: what is the correct term for this kind of "fog". By "fog of war" we mean the dark area that covers both map and units. What is the proper term for the fog that we are talking about here.. the fog that conceals units but not the terrain (you've all seen this in computer games propbably: Age of Empires and Baldur's Gate come into my mind)
Question/suggestion with dropping tokens in the GM Layer. Is there a possibility to have an opacity bar for the tokens/items put in the GM Layer? I put together some encounters and I had an orc hiding in a tree, so that my players would not see it I put it in the GM Layer, only thing is that when I went back to the map, I also could not find my orc. I had to do click and drag to open a square in the area that the orc was suppose to be so that I could find it. The GM Layer to hide things is great, but the image is so opaque that it gets lost in the other item placed on the map. Here is the map in questions, there are three things that I put in the GM Layer, 2 maybe a bit easier then the one.
I would like something similar to this as well. My thoughts are to types of "fog". Darkness which would block map and tokens. And the second is fog or low light which would only block tokens.
