Could Roll20 be used for a Play by Post game?

If all players are set as GM, and given the chat history remains, could a player connect to the campaign, do his "post" and even move his character on the map if necessary, and roll what he needs before to disconnect? I am curious if anyone thought about this? Thanks in advance for your ideas Cheers Ceodryn
Players don't need to be a GM to log in to a campaign and play on the map last loaded.
Oh so even if the GM isnt present, a player can load the campaign and roll dices, etc?
Yes. Play by post would be effortless on Roll20.
As long as your trust your group with tokens on the map when you aren't there you should be fine.
I would just have the players make detailed use of the /me command for actions (/me takes a 5 ft step, then starts casting Walloping Wumpus), and speak only in character in the chat unless they change the little drop down at the bottom to their username instead of their PC's name.  Use email/im/etc to talk privately w/ the gm. Just my random, adlebrained thoughts.

You can have people leave a visual record on the map (via Art Tools) of where they were and where they went. You can check this record later.  Play By Post can be easily done using Roll20. All you need to do is come up with protocols to handle the various 'when do people do what' type issues and 'how do we record this information' type issues. Those protocols should be pretty simple.  Dice rolls: make sure all dice rolls are announced. Example (pathfinder based, fighter with spirited charge): /me charges Monster #1 and strikes with his lance! /roll [attack] 1d20 +5[BAB] +4[Str] +1[WF] -2[PA] +2[charge] /roll [damage] 3d8 (+4*1.5[Str] +2[WS] +6[PA])*3 All of the comments [] tell the GM what is being added. It is clear who is being attacked, it is clear what is being rolled.  - Gauss
If I was going to run a play by post on roll20, I would not allow the players to move tokens on the map and just let the gm do all the map updates from the players posts in the campaign forums.  So to make a long story short, yes roll20 would work excellent in many aspects for a play by post game.  One aspect they are lacking is good user friendly character sheets but that is a know topic and I will not reopen that can of worms.  Especially when there are several outside sites to add character sheets.
