Brand Spanking New Player Advice.

Hey, My name is Lewis and I'm 100% brand new to the world of dungeons and dragons as of today. I've always wanted to delve into this world/ these worlds but have never found the time or have always become distracted. now I'm going to make some time for myself to discover this hobby but i was wondering if anyone has any advice or tips for a brand new player. I personally prefer the idea of playing online using video chat as it just fits better with my life and how i want to play but i have no idea where to start, what to get, how to find a group who will embrace and mould a new player and help grasp the nuances and intricacies or this vast universe. I had a look through the forum to find some advice and couldn't find a compendium of advice but i apologise if I'm posting a new topic where there already is one or in the wrong place. Thanks! Lewis

Well, you took the first step by joining here. The next step, again, was asking for help. Now all you have to do is find a game that is accepting new players and get accepted. That is the main hitch for new players. So lets go over one way (there are many ways but I'm going to keep it simple) to get gaming. The first step is go to the looking for group up above in the blue banner then choose the game system you wish to play/learn There are a wide variety of game systems but you mentioned D&D so as you can see there are many forms of D&D. Deciding on one or many of them is up to you. The following steps are rather straight forward Choose the language you are comfortable in using, keywords are just a search filter to help narrow down your selection, Days is another filter that works to show only the days you are wanting game on, same with the to be played. Now the key spot you want to be sure to checkmark is the one I have highlighted "Only find games that welcome new players" as that will filter to show games that welcoming to people that are new. There is the what time you can start also filter. So you have all that or am I boring you yet? :) Now we are to the hardest part since everything so far was just a point and click. Now you have to put yourself on the line and show the GM of the game you are interested in why he should pick you for his game. Ask questions, post some non-personal info for him to get to know you some. This is your introduction to a stranger and your first impression. Make it good and you should get in the game. You can picture it this way, You just walked up to someone at a table with all those fascinating books laying around him and you are peering at the book covers (your initial hello sentence) and he looks at you with a raised eyebrow so you introduce yourself (the next sentence of your post). Now you get to explain your interest in his game (main reason of your intro post). He gets to respond to you then. Good luck on finding a game.
Hey thanks a lot for the information, you put it very succinctly and clearly. I'm gonna jump in now and see where i get but I'm gonna take all ur advice on board.

I'm happy that I could help. Good luck.
OBZeta, you may also find the Roll20 wiki to be a useful place to find information and tutorials for using the application: https://wiki.roll20.net/Main_Page Our intrepid Moderator, Kristin, has also made a set of tutorial videos that are geared towards people just starting out. You can find them all on the Roll20 Help Youtube Channel . The crash course series (also found in this thread: https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/920084/new-to-roll20-need-some-guidance-click-here#post-920084 ) is mainly for leaning to create campaigns, but it's helpful for learning how the system works.
Good luck, and welcome to the Roll20 Community.
hey thanks a bunch to you all for the welcome and the advice. really excited to take this massive journey!
