As a question for players and GMs whom utilize portrait tokens for their PCs, how important is the color of the border to you? If all your portrait tokens had a single color/style, what do you wish it would be?
I personally like reds, blacks, and wood tones for my borders. I dont like bright colors because they are too distracting. I also like a bit of patterning on the borders. Here is a good example of what I like: <a href="http://gallery.rptools.net/v/contrib/Jector/Borders/Border+Lava.png.html" rel="nofollow">http://gallery.rptools.net/v/contrib/Jector/Borders/Border+Lava.png.html</a> <a href="http://gallery.rptools.net/v/contrib/Jector/Borders/Border+Wood+2.png.html" rel="nofollow">http://gallery.rptools.net/v/contrib/Jector/Borders/Border+Wood+2.png.html</a> - Gauss
I color tokens in my game to help me and my players differentiate "important" tokens from less important ones. I created a template to have a weathered metal/rock look that is generic enough and fits for my D&D campaign's fantasy setting and colored in a way that categorizes tokens into two groups. Simple, but with enough texture to keep it interesting. It's inspired by the design of WOTC's official D&D tokens in a few of their boxed products. Gold-bordered tokens always represented the PCs, notable bad guys/monsters, and important NPCs; Grey-bordered tokens represented normal monsters and characters of no major importance.
I prefer to use top down tokens... so no issues with borders, but I really like the gold and grey borders up there. I would prolly use grey for minions, green for standard, silver for elite, gold for solo.
I'm sort of with Gauss here. I always use plain black borders on tokens (except in Shadowrun, where I might give the border a pseudo tech-ring look). I guess that I like my borders black with a lighter background to make them easy to distinguish against most backgrounds. Or it could just be the aging goth in me.
You and me both Yann. I have worn all black for decades now. Although I hung out with the Goth crowd I was never dressed Goth (beyond black). I preferred dress shirts and jeans back then. - Gauss
