Mapping unique objects and color tiles

I am wondering if there's a way to do something in Roll20's map creation, or a good workaround. I'm trying to create a continent map with a particular shape, and I'm struggling to handle coloration to fit along the shapes' contours. If I draw a coastline freehand, with curves, I end up not being able to color terrain on either side to fit. Because textures/tiles/whathaveyou are in squares. So if the coast looks like, say, a C. I can't put water in the C and grass outside the C, because there's no way to shape a square of texture. And while I could use the coloration tool on the "draw shape" tab, the colors are very basic; I'm throwing out the ability to use textures for flat colors.

I think the only way to get what you want is to create the map in some external software and import the final image.
Or just use hexes.
If you are interested in external software for creating maps, Humble Bundle is doing a very good offer on Campaign Cartographer but only for the next 3 days.
