Creating nice looking mountains

Hey guys, I am in the middle of creating a local-world-map for a campaign using only the drawing tools in the roll20 app. However, I am finding it very difficult to make convincing-looking mountains and was wondering if anyone had any tips! Thanks!
Well I've never used the Roll20 drawing tools for mapmaking so I can't help you there but if you're willing I wouldn't mind giving you some tutoring in how to use GIMP to create realistic looking maps. Drop me a PM if you're interested =)

If you're trying to draw them out like an overmap illustration, here's a simple guide here - http://www.fantasticmaps.com/2012/03/how-to-draw-isometric-hand-drawn-mountains/
Ooh, nice, thanks Kristin, will look this over. (yes, I know I wasn't the guy asking, but I still liked the link) :)
liked it as well... definitely going to use in future maps, though for the one im currently making it wont work as ive already made most of the map top down!

Direct top-down view of mountains is notoriously hard to draw or symbolize. You will even find some top-down maps that still use isometric or tilted-view mountain ranges even tho the rest of the map is top-down. It depends on your map style & scale is a huge factor (are you zoomed in on a region, or zoomed out to see a continent or hemisphere?). If your map is not bothered by a "symbol" style then you could just put a tiny little triangle where each mountain peak is, and it would be a symbol, but I am guessing you are zoomed in more closely on a region and you want a more illustrative view of the mountains. You may want to think about there being mountains arranged into a mountain-range (line of mtns) with foothills extending off the sides. Another place to ask for mapping tips & read extensive info that's already posted about this & to see many examples, go to Cartographer's Guild and visit their forums, Focus on the section for Regional Mapping, and also read Virtual Tabletop Mapping section, General Discussion, Tutorials / How To section, Mapping Elements, Reference Material, and the "How Do I??" subforum they offer.
