Game Day With Tales From the Loop! Date: Tuesday, December 22nd Start Time: 9:00 AM PST / 5:00 PM GMT Duration: 6 hours Voice: Voice and sound will be run on Discord Everything Else: Roll20 is used for everything else: character sheets, maps, handouts, some music, and sound effects Style: Action is a part of most RPGs, but I emphasize story, character, mood, and place. The idea is to live a story and that is always the goal. So my poor wife has to work unexpectedly today and tomorrow, and I thought, rather than spend the day doing chores or playing computer games, why not spend it with people who are also stuck by themselves for the day as well. We can get together and have some fun in a shared story. So if you’re such a sad sack and you want to drop yourself into a day of strange wonder and mystery, come on over and hang out with folks and maybe make some new friends. Tales From the Loop is the lauded Swedish roleplaying game that has been spun-off to a boardgame and television series, all of which are based on the artwork of Simon Stålenhag's book of the same name. It takes place in the 1980’s, but not the 80’s of our past, but one slightly more advanced, where robots and massive sky freighters are common. There are events running under the surface that adults, perhaps because they are so caught up in their mundane lives, are unable or unwilling to recognize. Children, perhaps because they’re still willing to believe in wonder and of possibilities outside the norm as plausible, can sometimes recognize the strange, disturbing, and horrific in aspects that are too easily explained away by adults. The player characters in this game are children. Stranger Things is arguably the show that best captures this genre. But others would include The Explorers, The Goonies, E.T , and probably a host of Disney shows that are best forgotten. But of course, the absolute best for capturing the moody feel is the television series that shares the name of its RPG genesis, Tales From the Loop , which streams on Amazon Prime and possibly elsewhere. Travel back in time to the 1980’s to channel your youth, and perhaps add in a dash of danger, and a modicum of mystery to what you experienced. -- Or perhaps this will awaken memories of things you suppressed and now realize that they were real after all. As always for my games, the primary rules for interaction are courtesy, patience, acceptance, tolerance, and having respect for everyone. Newbies are welcome. Games are always free. Having the rules is never required. And for one-off social games like this, characters will be provided. All you need to do is show up, ready to have some fun.
