Is it just because it's simple? I get what it does, mechanically, but don't see why it would be recommended to that degree. Message Of The Day installs cleanly (from the One-Click) on a bare fresh Roll20 tabletop with no game in mind, no sheet assigned, no contents in it yet, and you (the Creator GM) open the Launch Game and already see the API doing what it does. That is why it is one of the best introductions to "What could API do for me?" It's a great starting point for any Non-Programmer (newcomer to API useage), someone who wants to touch ZERO !commands or --config command lines, read almost no Help files, write no macros. Majority of API's recommended here requires a game, like an RPG game with stats, attributes, character sheet, tokens, maps, walls and doors and dynamic light, and-or variety of rolls, to function --- to actually do anything. You need a built-established game & a goal of something you want to specifically command it to do, to see it working. MoTD is system agnostic, unbothered by lack of built contents in your tabletop, easy to modify (not modify the Code, just modify the Handout that the API automatically puts under Journals for you). Another reason is that I install it on every game, whether it's a brand new game, or a heavily built-out gaming group. So you might as well start there.
