General Discussions and Shenanigans Thread #09:

No strength bonuses added to missile or thrown weapons unless it is a magical weapon or regular weapon, (where you need to be able to pull the string's full draw weight, using your strength's max press), designed to specifically do so 2E lets you add it in, 1E does not, so to Un-Nerf it is not being done, unless as stated above. ================================================== "Zhora Is getting the +1 Dexterity missile bonus and that is all!" & +1 Melee damage for Strength? ---------------------------------------------------- Just let me know what the ruling is. I am not going to argue
I am fine w/ whatever you call, Ricky Very much fine
Yes, your 16 dexterity Missile bonus gives you a +1 to hit or dodge, your strength of 16 gives you +1 damage on melee weapons. =============== I have AC 6 now and +1 to hit w/ Bow and +1 Damage to Melee, as far as I understand it.
Thankyou, Ricky
My copy of the newly expanded, "Lost City of Gaxmoor" arrived today, along with the supplemental maps, poster, additional adventure and booklet on Undead stuff! If anything to nitpick, it's the overall quality of it all. It actually looks like someone put it all together, using their home printer and the books have a worn used look about them!
On the plus side at least who ever you bought them from did not rip you off by just keeping your money and not sending you anything. Maybe the books are "New" in the sense that they have not been read but have been sitting in a box for awhile unsold?
Yes, the Undead book and other adventure looks to have been sitting around awhile in stock storage. Maybe I'll take pictures of the stuff later.
I now have, the 4K/blu-ray set of, "The Beastmaster"! It is a really nice set with a booklet included! https://vinegarsyndrome.com/products/beastmaster
Tanya Roberts was pretty good in that movie also Marc Singer was not bad in it
Ok, I went in and turned off all of the API scripts then tried the weapon macros for Lord Cromther, Dru and Sheila. They all worked correctly with the Strength ability bonuses attributes going into the roll and calculating it right. So I then went and re-enabled all of the API scripts being used and tried it again and the To Hit macros continued to work properly! So we shall see this coming Sunday if they continue to work with everyone in the game!
I should note that earlier on, when the strength bonuses glitch was first noticed, I deleted the API scripts out and it still happened.
They are releasing the music from AC/DC Singer Bon Scott's first band, Fraternity! It is a 3-CD set called "Season of Change" and was a total of $41.86 to ship it with tracking: Article: https://loudwire.com/bon-scott-lost-songs-released/ The Set itself: https://www.cherryred.co.uk/product/fraternity-seasons-of-change-the-complete-recordings-1970-1974-3cd/
I am still working on the 01/24/2021 game session summary! It's about half done. I hope to get it posted sometime after dinner on Saturday.
Hey DM your idea of the Chicken mind taking over is a bit odd and seems to come from a way of thinking that says a chicken mind is brought there and displaced by the Character's mind hehe The spell does not grab a random chicken and put the character's mind into it all it does is transform the body and equipment into a chicken, there is no chicken mind being displaced or my personal favorite was a bunny or a snail, but anyways, there is no other mind fighting for dominance there is only the character's mind being put into a different body
"There is a base 100% chance that this change will its personality and mentality into that of the creature whose form it now possesses." It is a brutal spell. When I play a mage it is not at the top of the list of spells I take when I attain fourth level spells because saving throw negates and I prefer to get something for my money if I cast a fourth level spell. But like most things in AD&D (and the reason I prefer 1st to 2nd and certainly either over anything that has come after them) there are dire consequences for failing a saving throw as there should be. So failing the save, two dispel magic spells cast and then failing the check. Handwriting on the wall. The character believes it is a chicken and even if the magic is now dispelled he is going to believe he is a chicken who has been transformed into a human. I have never accepted that to be a playable character myself because the change is permanent. " there is no other mind fighting for dominance there is only the character's mind being put into a different body" It is not that a chicken mind replaces the character's mind. The magic has altered the character's personality and mentality making him believe he is actually the creature he has been changed into. In this instance it is a chicken. But it could have been a dragon or a pixie. This just means that even if the magic is dispelled the creature still believes it really is the form it was transformed into. This could have been an intelligent creature like a dragon or an elf which is still playable in which case the deluded dragon might attempt to reobtain it's 'true' form. But believing one is a lower animal... I'm old school. Saving throws matter. I like save or die poison. This is why killing the mage should always be the number one priority. At higher level, they are simply the most powerful characters in the game. My goal is always to protect the mage in my party and get him to higher levels and to kill the rival mage first.

Dru I fucked up. I attacked the wrong Yuan Ti. I did that because the other ones were already damaged and pinned down and I had no idea that the one in the south was the spellcaster. But I certainly would have prioritized that wizard if I had known. So maybe I need to examine the uniforms, &/or insignia, badges of merit, etc., if any, and get some idea of how to ID Yuan Ti spellcasters at sight. If returned to human form, which will happen, regardless, I don't think he would simply *believe* he is a chicken. I think he would have the mind of a chicken, inc. low Int? If it's just a belief, then he would have his normal Int, and a good chance of getting back. But if it is the psyche, that is the whole mind, and has an Int of 2 then the chances of coming back are slim. The metaphysics of this ruling don't make sense to me. 1/ The mind presumably changes because the brain changes (base 100%), inc. the brain. 2/ So there should be a base 100% chance of the mind changing back when the body does, imho. Anyway, you have decided to roll up a new PC, regardless.

Zhora found being a chicken totally mortifying, btw. She is still seeking revenge upon the Yuan Ti half-blood who did that to her.
New Pre-Order for, "The Eurocrypt of Christopher Lee" ($105.00)! https://severin-films.com/shop/eurocrypt-christopher-lee
Xilicien, has now reached Level 8 and gains the title of Warlock! He gains one 3rd level and one 4th level spell now!
Alright Xilicien maybe Fireball or Lightning Bolt for 3rd level
I changed up the Critical Hits tables so that now it can result in: Double, Maximum or Triple damage. Before it was just Double and Triple only resulted if you rolled two 20's in a row. There is now a lower chance to score Triple damage. Some Fumble table results now tell you to roll again if you don't have a helm or shield.
When I saw the title of the latest thread I had to laugh because my first thought was What is Channel 60? haha yeah I'm old school
I just happened to stumble upon this bit if information right now, while looking to see if anyone had made a lair map for the Pan Lung: In The Scarlet Brotherhood accessory by Sean K. Reynolds , the Forbidden City was named Xuxulieto and the mountain range it lies in is called the Xaro Mountains .

Ok, I have the 5E C1: Hidden Shrine of Tomaochan now and started by working on converting over one of the monsters: (5E) AC is the equivalent of 8 in AD&D. In AD&D it's AC is actually 3. (Which is what I will keep). Movement: 30 ft (5E) ; Will be 120 ft (AD&D) Hit points: 60 (5E) ; 20 (AD&D) ; I will likely try the 60 but see below. AD&D: poison attack ; (5E): no poison; as a result the damage is 3 less than in AD&D. I will definitely keep the poison and AD&D damage. The monster will actually gain 2 combat things it didn't have in AD&D. One of them, blind sight (5E) gets converted to blind fighting (AD&D). It has a 19 strength in 5E, which is what I will keep and thus it will get the bonuses just like player characters. (Because of this though I may keep the hit points to 20 or perhaps try 40; will probably decide during the fight! ;p) AD&D XP: Level 4: [60 + (4 * 20 hit points = 80) + (Special Ability: 25) + (Exceptional Ability: 65) = 230 XP ; Or if 60 hit points: 390 XP (5E XP): Challenge Level 3: 700 XP (5E)

Because the strength is 19 that's +3 To Hit and +7 on damage, meaning one of it's full attack damage would be a max of 26 hit points! Since the monster didn't show bonuses in the AD&D module it's strength was likely 14-15. One odd thing is that it's To Hit is a 10 according to the module while normally at 4th level for a monster it is 15. So it may be a typo, however this value carries over from the monochrome version to the color cover version! That said, that means the monster's 1E strength is likely a 23 and the attack above is actually rolled as: 1d3 + (1d4+1) +11 = 19 maximum damage. This is likely why the damage is the way it is, (Since Gary didn't show the monster's ability stats in AD&D, you had to figure it out this way). Otherwise it would be thought as 19+11 = 30 maximum damage, if you didn't realize that. So I need to redo the original roll from 1d3 + (2d8), where you save for half on the 2d8 to the 1d3 + (1d4+1) + 11 and just save for half on the damage not including the 1st die. Gary or the module's creator just changed it up specifically for the monster, even though the 11 should be part of the basic damage, not the poison.
Just finished another monster for the next module: The creature has an AC of 7 in AD&D and for 5E it is a 12 or 8 in AD&D. In 5E, they nerfed it to only have 1 attack that scores 0 to 3 hit points. In AD&D the monster has 3 attacks. In 5E it gained Pack Tactics which gives it an advantage on rolls. So in AD&D this is added in to give a +1 to attacks, checks and saving throws. Interestingly in the original color module the saves shown are for level 0 monsters but it is level 1+1 so I corrected this! It's obviously an editing mistake. I will check the basic edition to see it this stems from bringing it over from that or they simply upped it's level for this module and didn't change the saves. I will go ahead and make a log of the conversion changes and post it After the module's completion now.
There was no game played tonight, though those that managed to make it and get into the game, chatted it up for a while! So we shall try again next week. Hopefully, Roll20 figures out what is causing the site to go haywire by then!
Got a note that the Luke Gygax recommended, "Pyscho Goreman" is on the way from Canada, arriving by April 9th! https://ravenbanner.store/collections/blu-ray-dvds/products/pg-psycho-goreman-limited-hunky-boy-edition

Interesting, I don't recall ever seeing arrows with fins below the head!
Those are part of the heads, if you're referring to the part below the notches.
Here is an example of a spell for the Tamoachan module. Some of the spell will stay the same, others will get enhanced like below: Name: C1-BestowCurse-1E2E5E &{template:2Espell}{{title=@{selected|character_name}, casts a BESTOW CURSE Spell upon @{target|character_name}!}}{{splevel=Level 3 Cleric}}{{school=(Necromancy) Reversible}}{{components=V,S}}{{time= [[1]] Turn}}{{range= Touch}}{{duration= Permanent or see below}}{{aoe= Creature Touched}}{{save= Vs Spell Negates}}{{effects= Caster places a curse on the subject. Choose one of the following three effects. 1) -6 decrease to an ability score (minimum 1). 2) -4 penalty on attack rolls, saves, ability and NWP checks. 3) Each turn, the target has a 50% chance to act normally; otherwise, it takes no action. 5E Addition: While the Target is Cursed, your attacks deal an extra 1D8 necrotic damage to the Target! You may also invent your own curse, but it should be no more powerful than those described above. 5E Addition: Up to 4th level, the duration is concentration, up to 10 minutes. At 5th level or higher, the duration is 8 hours. At 7th level or higher, the duration is 24 hours. At 9th level, the spell lasts until it is dispelled. At 5th level or higher the spell grants a duration that doesn't require concentration. The curse bestowed by this spell cannot be dispelled, but it can be removed with a break enchantment, limited wish, miracle, remove curse, or wish spell. Bestow curse counters remove curse.}}

I recently finished watching Thundercats on wcostream.com, it's a great site to watch cartoons & anime for free, but you have to spell the show's name exactly right or you won't find it. I've started watching Scooby-doo where are you?
Cool Site! I sent the link to cousins with young kids! A Note about how the HP is being done for the Tamoachan module. If say the 5E version gives it 85 hit points (10D10 +30) and the AD&D Module gives it 23 hit points, I use the following to figure out its new HP: (85 - 23 = 62/2 = 31+23 = 54 New HP) Or I could have just used 45 HP as it reflects the maximum AD&D 5+1 HD of 5D8+5= 45. On the other hand if the monster was 10 HD in AD&D I would just use the 85 if it was the higher of the two HP totals.
I don't know if I will get last week's summary typed up today and posted before the game or not! I haven't started it yet, however I did edit down the chat archive. I'll be doing a 5 mile walk and that's 3 hours right there gone, with walking then showering up after.

I also might keep Short/Medium and Large damage for most weapons. If the 5E weapon damage is more than the 1E/2E one I will use that and vice versa.
Ok, I have combined the monster information from the 1E and 5E versions of the Tamoachan module. I will need to go through them again to make any tweaks now. Next up is going through the encounter texts to see what was removed in the 5E version and restore it, while keeping anything improved upon. I also see that the orientation of the Maps are sideways so that North is facing west. I typically try to have it so that north is always facing north (Up)! If I fix the map orientation that will involve moving the tokens and anything like room numbers and monsters on the DM Layer of the map. They actually added one room, though it was blank, so I fixed that by tiling the floor and being able to look for images of what is mentioned in the room.

Ok, to get an idea of what is left to explore in the Forbidden City, here are the locations either not visited yet or passed over: North: Deathwalker's Compound: You found another way down into the lower parts of Thracia. You could deal with the evilly tainted leaders and their henchmen. North West Quadrant: Looks like everything was explored, however you could go to T7: Temple with Phase Spiders. In Area T6 you could deal with the Bugbear Grunts there. You have defeated their leader and shaman. T1 has a small army of bugbears and some gnolls. This is the main entrance to the lower parts of the city. West: You could pay a visit to the Mongrelmen at Area D. See if they are friendly or not. South West Quadrant: Area N8 is the Tamoachan Temple, which reminds me two nesting Wyverns were there and need to be added maybe South: Area E is visible as a huge tree whose height is most of the way up the cliff. South East: Areas M2 and M3 are Yuan-Ti Halfblood dwellings with many YT's. East: Area B is a lianas vines covered cliff area yet unexplored. Area F is the primitive Bullywug frogmen tribe area where you have not set foot yet. On the other side of the swampy area is an unexplored Cave Entrance. North East: Area S2 is the "Tomb of the Mummy Bride" module. Bullywug Frogmen mound, has not been explored. Miscellaneous: I will likely stage a raid on the Mongrelmen compound. This would basically be an encounter from the original module, changed up a bit.
Ok, I have now done 17 of 39 encounters on a Tamoachan map so far. There are cases where WotC omits descriptions or words that could give it more information and the funny thing it has nothing to do with the silly censoring they do. Though there is some cases where the rewording or new text does describe things better. On that note, yes, they sterilized one encounter even omitting the word 'beautiful'. Another encounter they omit a description because it deals with red and black skin. As for value of items found, sometimes it's more, sometimes less than the original stated value. So in this case I will take the highest of the two, or if one shows it is a random value and the other does not I will use the random one.
I still say Orcs are Evil despite WOTC allowing them as PCs, may just be due to being Old School but unless WOTC comes up with a Good Orc God like they did for Drow, I'm not in favor of their warnings on stuff on drivethrurpg saying that the wording in 1e and 2e books may be controversial the only thing that made them a controversy was the demon scare of the 1980s
Just doing the 20th encounter for Tamoachan and here is an example of something removed from the description, yet adds to it. Apparently it's taboo at WotC to mention women: "About a dozen clay women of court, bedecked in feathers and shell jewelry, stand in attendance."
Another example of WotC's censoring: Part of this line was omitted and changed to only be figures of the Sun God: "There are other jade figurines in the pile of bones depicting bare breasted women and a sun-god in a feathered robe." Also here is the front cover of the sequel to the play-test we did, "Clan of the Black Wolf". I guess you could say it's an improvement, the style is just weird though, like not abstract but abstract, Cartoony yet realistic, cut and pasty yet painted/drawn: https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=10159850306005450&set=gm.5710088212366832 No, we are not doing the play-test for this one. He did just sent it out today to others and is only giving them a month before he slaps it up on DMSGuild. I might still get it later however.
It is an improvement The way WOTC is going at this point, if they have not already, they will edit out the Female Drow in their chain mail bikinis in the GDQ Modules sigh oh well
I can come in the game and help those that are making new characters, right now and throughout the night and after dinner Friday and Saturday as well. I actually recommend everyone to get new characters made as Tamoachan could likely be very deadly! That said, I am typing up the game session summary for 05/02/21 and started typing in the Round #05 of eight, info from the Yaun-Ti fight. Then I have to edit down 05/09's chat archive and start typing the game summary for that one. I may also work on a bit more of Tamoachan. With the information combined, I started on encounter #01 to get all of the needed tokens down and corrected to be Jungle tribe people, instead of a European girl in a cloak, a knight in full field plate, or a European woodsman. Also, need to tweak npc/monster sheet information as I go along with each encounter. Weapon damage is still pretty much the same, I see that WotC includes the strength bonuses on the sheets, which made it appear to do more damage, which it really does not, so basically it's still the same and we use the AD&D strength bonuses as usual. I will probably go right into working on the, "Caverns of Thracia" maps, after I get Tamoachan done. For those of you in the 5E, "Lost mines of Phandelver / Dragon of Icespire Peak game", there was one more add-on I was looking at which involves having a castle having been rebuilt, so I may not include it, certainly at the point in game world time we are. Just going by that Castle Building supplement I post into each game, it could take years to refurbish!
Hey We can save our money to refurbish it !! Figure out what we want, how much it costs work towards that goal I'm here to make my Thief for the 1e/2e game
Ok Folks, here is the Invite Link into the "C1: Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan" adventure module! https://app.roll20.net/join/10174449/QO-Y7w Even if you are not playing and just want to read the game you can join in.
Ok, with the 05/09 game posted, I want to try and get this past weekend's two games typed up and posted by wednesday evening now. Starting with the "Tamoachan" module I think I will no longer post the edited down chat archive as an archived "story chapter", as it is obvious that very few even read them. This will help remove some clutter from the game threads. However, I wish that Roll20 would set up the threads to be just like a bulletin board forum, so that I can keep the threads separated into groups. What I will do, is instead of post the chat archive, is if a player would like to have it, I would e-mail it to them each week, since it gives the full game experience. As for the weekly game summary, starting with the Tamoachan module, I will include a Loot list and Coinage list, so that they are readily available and easily updated, instead of being buried in the threads and never used because of it. Only Buddy, Devin and Roxxifarius have joined the "Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan" game. So assuming no one else will continue reading the game or due to work schedules, can no longer play or whatever I will open the game up for at least 3 or even 5 new players. So we can get the game attendance back up to at least 4 players showing up each week (half the party). Just in case someone forgot to join here is the Tamoachan Invite Link again: https://app.roll20.net/join/10174449/QO-Y7w
Ok, I have now gone and went through the first 10 encounters in the Tamoachan module, making tweaks and corrections to the text and monster sheets, so that those should now be ready to play. With last weekend's game summaries already out of the way, I will continue to comb through it and iron it out. I am thinking of getting the, "Alien" game from Free League Publishing. If you all want, maybe we can take a break after the Tamoachan module and see what "Alien" has to offer. I would be starting on updating maps for "Caverns of Thracia" while we play it, then. It appears that only Buddy, Devin and Roxxifarius are able to continue on to "Tamoachan" so the game is open for at least 3 to 5 more players.
