Ch. 51: The Party Finds Gundren's Map, then deal with Hobgoblins and Gricks!

Roqar: Morning   Connor D.: Morning.   Roqar: Hopefully we can decide to Kill the Drow Haha   Connor D.: I wouldn't know. New here. : x   Buddy D.: morning yall   Connor D.: Hai.   Roqar: Well What we were doing was investigating a town where we suspect a green dragon is hiding out we got into the tower in town and met a Drow now me being a High Elf vote to kill the Drow but the others are a bit hesitant   Connor D.: ...Definitely missing some details myself but I guess it'll clear up once the DM is here.   Roqar: Also a High Elf in another sense LOL the Ranger has some green tabbacco that we usually smoke a bit after a day adventuring   Connor D.: Lovely.   Willie Belson: im hoping we can go kill that drow today   Roqar: Exactly   Dungeon Master (GM): Hello Folks!   Connor D.: hey   Roqar: Hi   When the Wizard: Hey!   Willie Belson: Welcome amigo's and amiga's   Roqar: Nice We will have enough to run the game Vote to kill the Drow and take on the dragon   Willie Belson: heck yeah I agree roqar   Dungeon Master (GM): ok, so now we last left off after the party has just fought with King Grol and a drow elf named Vyerith and pet wolf of Grol named Snarl. In the room was also their captive, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker, who is the very dwarf you sought.   Roqar: Yes another quest completed   Dungeon Master (GM): Gundren was a partner with Sildar Hallwinter whom is with the party acting as a guide. Sildar and Galdor are outside the castle currently keeping watch for any guards coming their way.   When the Wizard: Is there anything else in the castle we wanted, or should we just head back to return Gundren?   Dungeon Master (GM): Ok, you could leave if you wish, but then the goblins and bugbears will continue to raid folks that travel along the High road and Triboar trail, plus they may be working with the Anchorites of Talos here in the Neverwinter woods.   Roqar: We probably need to clear it out before we leave Starting with Making the Evil Drow a Good Drow By being a Dead Drow   Dungeon Master (GM): oh yea, the Drow did have a hold person spell cast on her, which I assume is not in effect now since you started questioning them.   Roqar: She was also tied up   Dungeon Master (GM): right   When the Wizard: Grol is prone and pinned, right?   Roqar: Yes Hes tied up also   Willie Belson: ha ha roqar I like that a good drow a dead drow i say that about about a yankees fan or a lakers fan joking of course I dotn want them dead just maybe a stubbed toe did roll20 freee   Dungeon Master (GM): ok, so now, are we going to infiltrate more of the castle or leave and head to phandalin, also are you bringing the captives along or leaving them here when you do either of those two options?   Connor D.: Nah. I'm good. Ah btw when does my character get introduced? Will it be soon, or am I just gonna be here waiting a bit?   When the Wizard: Sounds dangerous to leave captives behind while exploring the castle. Do we think the goblins care about them enough for them to be useful hostages?   Dungeon Master (GM): Connor you can control Galdor and or Dolores for now, we can introduce your new character after this map is done when you are back in phandalin.   Connor D.: ....Uh....Oh. That throws me for a loop then. Hang on.   Roqar: We know there are more here these two are the most likely leaders would make decent meat shields the only problem is that using them that way they may escape   Dungeon Master (GM): When you get back to phandalin, When, Dolores and likely Galdor as well will be retired as adventurers.   Connor D.: I guess I can try to get a grip on Dolores, then.   Dungeon Master (GM): you have Reidoth the druid, awaiting you in the woods just outside the castle, perhaps see if he can watch the captives in some way? alright connor   Willie Belson: ill take willie jk   Roqar: I vote save everyone the trouble and kill them   Dungeon Master (GM): ok anyone else up for doing that? Hello Bahrrenn!   Bahrrenn Drakke: (Hello Everyone)   Connor D.: Not knowing what happened the last session exactly makes me have no idea whether to be yes or no on that.   Bahrrenn Drakke: (Sorry for being late)   Dungeon Master (GM): ok, there are weekly gaming session summaries posted each week and that is the best way to keep up on what is going on. This full chat also gets posted as an edited down archive of the full game that day.   Farren Nidanas: DM, is the loot that you posted the only things the drow and the bugbear has?   Dungeon Master (GM): Bahrren they are deciding on what to do with the captives and also whether or not to infiltrate more of the castle or return to Phandalin with Gundren, whom is still in a bad shape, though better than when you found him.   Farren Nidanas: rolling 1d2( 1 ) = 1   Dungeon Master (GM): yes, it is the only loot on them.   Farren Nidanas: I vote for infiltrate
Willie Belson: me too   When the Wizard: We could also just send Gundren down with Sildar while we infiltrate.   Farren Nidanas: how many bolts are in the quiver the drow has?   Connor D.: vote is to infiltrate also   Dungeon Master (GM): When suggested a good option there. There are 20 bolts in the quiver.   When the Wizard: (Is Gundren useful in combat?)   Roqar: Gundren is a common Merchant   Dungeon Master (GM): Sildar does know how to get back to Phandalin from here.   When the Wizard: I was thinking they would help Galdor keep watch and wait for us.   Dungeon Master (GM): The reason he was captured has to do with the Phandelver mine he and his brothers, whom are also both missing, had found and there is a map Gundren had with him, that he wants you to find, of which King Grol he said hid.   Farren Nidanas: wait are both the bugbear and drow still alive?   Roqar: So far Yes   Farren Nidanas: huh I mean I suck at persuasion and intimidation checks   Dungeon Master (GM): just checked the last summary and yes both are still alive.   Roqar: I'm good at it but I vote save time Kill them   When the Wizard: Probably better to keep the bugbear alive until we find the map, but otherwise, yeah, let's kill them to be safe.   Farren Nidanas: capture or kill rolling 1d2( 2 ) = 2 yeah   Dungeon Master (GM): looks like kill there   Farren Nidanas: I may have some reluctancy but I'm willing to just take care of the drow and bugbear but first is there anyone with good cha to get some info out of them?   Roqar: What do we want to ask them?   Farren Nidanas: I have -1 cha mod map   Dolores: +1 on my end, so no.   Farren Nidanas: the onfo that we don't know so far is the location of the map   When the Wizard: I use one of my cantrips to look like I'm going to attack, and ask the bugbear "Where did you hide the map?"   Farren Nidanas: info*   When the Wizard: 12 | 13 INTIMIDATION  (3) When the Wizard   Roqar: 21 | 9 INTIMIDATION  (1) Roqar   Farren Nidanas: damn nice   Connor D.: nice nat20.   Dungeon Master (GM): alright let me check on where it is   Farren Nidanas: Kk (ps, afk for a bit, gonna whip up something to eat, hungry)   Roqar the Elf Rogue Says: "Wheres the map Drow Bitch?"   King Grol the The Dude Says: "The dang map is just under the darn bed mattress"   Vyerith the Drow Elf Says: "I wouldn't know, that is what I am here for myself … Oh, there? Really?"   Farren Nidanas: (ohh yeah, before we forget) Ok, gonna post it here so that we can choose what to get Bugbear: hide armor, shield, morningstar, javelin Drow: scale mail, shortsword, hand crossbow, quiver of 20 bolts (I want the hand crossbow, quiver)   Roqar the Elf Rogue Says: "Anyone have a problem now with arranging a meeting of this Drow with her Spiderv Goddess?"   Dolores the Human Wizard Says: "No, I suppose not. Since this has proven to not be a complete waste, this time."   Roqar: (I'll take the Short Sword if thats alright?)   Dungeon Master (GM): short sword does 1d6 damage hand crossbow does 1d6 damage   Roqar: (If there are no objections Coup de grace on the Drow then the Bugbear)   Willie Belson: none from me amigo   When the Wizard: So we now have the map? No objections.   Dungeon Master (GM): alright it looks like the deed is done and both have their throats slit as to the map who looked under the mattress?   Roqar: Roqar did looking for traps also   Dolores the Human Wizard Sigh softly and shake head, looking away for a moment.   Dungeon Master (GM): ok   Roqar: 21 | 3 PERCEPTION  (1) Roqar   Dungeon Master (GM): no trap is to be found so she lefts up the mattress to see a stitched leather sack.   Roqar: Open the sack
Dungeon Master (GM): inside you find: 220 sp, 160 ep, three vials, and Gundren’s map to Wave Echo Cave. Gundren looks all happy when he sees the map.   When the Wizard: I look at the vials and try to identify them. 8 | 16 ARCANA  (1) When the Wizard   Dungeon Master (GM): ok now after a few minutes when Vyerith had bleed out you see that her body begins to change into a different form   When the Wizard: Is she still tied up?   Roqar: A Doppelganger?   Dungeon Master (GM): that it what it appears to be   Dolores the Human Wizard Turns to face the supposed drow, her eyes lighting up in recognition at the changed form. Says: "That's..unexpected."   Roqar the Elf Rogue Says: "Seems someone had a scheme going here"   I look at the body and investigate it further, looking to see what the dead "drow" actually was.   Dolores: 24 | 16 INTELLIGENCE  (5) Dolores   Farren Nidanas: (back)   Dungeon Master (GM): ok dolores well it was definitely not a drow and likely as you think it to be... a doppleganger   Dolores the Human Wizard Says: "A lesser Doppleganger. There's something afoot here. I think it's best if we don't stay here too long."   Farren Nidanas: (Ok, I'll just saw I took the other unwanted equipment on me, we can just sell them if not needed)   Roqar the Elf Rogue Says: "So the question now is, was the double walker working alone or with someone?" (Double walker loose translation from German )   Wizard the Lizardfolk Sorcerer Says: "We'll have to explore the castle to find out . . ."   Farren Nidanas the Elf Monk Says: "How did the goblins gain the employ of doppelggangers . . ."   Roqar: We will solve this mystery like the good Scoobies we are   Dolores the Human Wizard Nods slightly and fixes her glasses on her face. Says: "A good question for another time, Farren."   Roqar the Elf Rogue Says: "They probably thought it was a Drow, and she became a leader as a Drow"   Connor D.: Don't suppose Dolores can run a wisdom check to work that out in her head, under Insight?   Farren Nidanas: (Roqar, you got the gold, vials, and map right?)   Roqar: For now Yes can sort it out   Farren Nidanas: (ggod) (Now the next step   Dungeon Master (GM): Work what out dolores?   Farren Nidanas: do we bring Gundren with us or send one to bring him back to the city?   Connor D.: The question of whether doppelganger be alone, or working with someone   When the Wizard: Or leave Gundren with our lookouts?   Dungeon Master (GM): he could go out and be with sildar and Reidoth, Galdor could hang with them or come with the party   Roqar: Leave Gundren with Lookouts clean out the castle   Farren Nidanas: That sounds good   Dungeon Master (GM): ok so you tie a rope to him and assist in lowering him down to your lookouts. Any instructions for them, (your lookouts)? Connor there is really no way to know that right now as you lack any information at all.   Roqar: Be wary if any of us come to you alone its probably a doppelganger   Willie Belson: yup   Connor D.: Mh ok nevermind then.   Dungeon Master (GM): let me check the last summary to see about something in the exchange between the doppleganger and King Grol   Roqar: Lets open the door, Everyone ready?   Dungeon Master (GM): ok here it is: Roqar then hears a conversation in the room, a voice demanding payment (male) for something and a silky smooth reply (female). This is said in the Common tongue.   Roqar: So Drow hired them for a job   Dungeon Master (GM): so King Grol wanted money from the doppleganger for something ok, so as Roqar mentioned to you go through the south door on the west wall?   When the Wizard: Yep.   Dungeon Master (GM): ok   Roqar: 2 | 21 PERCEPTION  (1) Roqar   Farren Nidanas: help action   Roqar: No traps here   Dungeon Master (GM): this area is like a small hall you have curtains draped at the south and a door to your west   Roqar: Check the curtain any sound that way?   Dungeon Master (GM): roll a check   Roqar: 2 | 20 PERCEPTION  (1) Roqar
Dungeon Master (GM): no sound to be heard   Roqar: pull the curtain   Dungeon Master (GM): alright   Roqar: Anyone in the room?   Dungeon Master (GM): A stone brazier full of coals glows in the middle of this small barracks. Four straw pallets are lined up along the east wall. The wall to the south has collapsed, but a barred wooden door in that direction is still clear. A curtain hangs in an archway to the north.   No occupants currently in the room but the lit brazier is a good indication it was recently occupied   Dolores the Human Wizard Says: "Seems clear. After you, Farren."   Roqar the Elf Rogue Says: "Barred door means keeping something in or out"   When the Wizard: It's the south door that's barred, right? Not the one Roqar is at?   Dungeon Master (GM): correct   Roqar: (Like a shiny red button with a sign Do not push Must lift Bar off door   Dungeon Master (GM): So Roqar actually lifts the bar off?   Roqar: and open door   Dungeon Master (GM): alright   Willie Belson: back   Farren Nidanas: Can I search the beds?   Dungeon Master (GM): roll for surprise here   Farren Nidanas: nvm then hahaha   Willie Belson: 10 | 7 PERSUASION  (1) Willie Belson   Dungeon Master (GM): your dexterity vs a monsters wisdom perception   Willie Belson: 8 | 14 INVESTIGATION  (4) Willie Belson   Farren Nidanas: 15 | 25 STEALTH  (5) Farren Nidanas   Dungeon Master (GM): Roqar is not surprised as a huge owlbear swipes it's claws at her the moment the door is opened   Willie Belson: 12 | 16 STEALTH  (7) Willie Belson   Dungeon Master (GM): Claws Owlbear Attack: 12  |  14 Damage:   13  slashing Attacks Roqar!   Farren Nidanas: (Damn)   When the Wizard: 9.12 INITIATIVE  (1.12) When the Wizard   Farren Nidanas: (chill)   Willie Belson: Willie Belson, the Elf Ranger, gets ready to make an attack move! Or just tables?)   Dungeon Master (GM): They are Roqar the Elf Rogue Says: "Sorry guys I had to open that door"   Dolores the Human Wizard Says: "Doors that are barred, are barred for a reason, you know..!"   Dungeon Master (GM): The upper floors of this tower have collapsed to create a hollow silo at least thirty feet high, and the upper reaches of the room are lost in shadows. Dust, rubble, and broken glass cover the floor, and old worktables and bookshelves lie strewn to the south. In the middle of the room is a hulking beast that looks like a mangy bear with an owl’s head. It rears up and roars when it sees Roqar and slashed at her.   Wizard the Lizardfolk Sorcerer Says: "Shall we try the door that isn't barred now?"   Roqar the Elf Rogue Says: "Yeah, I know Dol, its just, it was calling me, open me, " Open the west door   Dungeon Master (GM): ok so Roqar opens the door ok   Dolores the Human Wizard Says: "Erm...no?
