New player seeking Intro into genre

Hello, roll20 community! I am 99% new to this genre of gaming (having played Talisman the board game with a few buddies last weekend) and was hoping there was anyone who wouldn't mind giving me a quick rundown on the different "boardstyles", rules, and other basic components of playing these games. So if anyone out there has some time to spare let me know :D.
BTW I am aware that the post title doesn't really fit... didn't really think that out :p

Moved to off-topic. (This is not really about Roll20 itself but about gaming in general.) Also, if you wish I can change the title. There are a number of different game types. RPGs, Wargames, board games of all kinds, card games. Could you narrow down which one you are seeking information on? - Gauss
Thanks for the reply! If you could change the title to "New player seeking Intro into genre" that'd be great. And the reason for the vagueness in the request is purely from lack of knowledge :/. But I guess I was looking for something/anything similar the board game talisman. Again, thanks!

Here's a link for those who might be curious on what the game is about and etc. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CDcQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FTalisman_(board_game)&ei=JXZOUemFFJT29gTClIGIAw&usg=AFQjCNHW38E-z3BfrwrqSbFnhp6dZA0YUw&bvm=bv.44158598,d.eWU&cad=rja
I think it is an interesting idea to run talisman (or other games like Dominion for instance) on the roll20 system. Never thought of it as a possibility, so I am constantly amazed when people come up with new uses for the system.
Have you ever heard of a game called Munchkin?
Ok so if you like board games I'll list a few of my favorites: Talisman, Arkham Horror, House on Haunted Hill, Settlers of Catan. (ignore my spelling) Arkham Horror is a Cthulhu/HP Love craft adventure game, House on Haunted Hill is similar but easier and faster to play. If you enjoyed Talisman and like old fashion scary movies, you will like these games. Now on to Table top RPGs. These are open ended story/adventure games such as DnD, Pathfinder, and Shadowrun. In these games one player takes the roll of the storyteller (usualy called the dungeon master or Game master.) and the other players "role play" characters in the story. there are some dice rolls and statistics and a little something for everyone. Some people like story heavy games some like to put an ax in something's face. If you are intrested in table top RPGs there are lots of choices. DnD and Pathfinder are the most common and probably the easiest to find a group for. I would suggest thinking of a genera Anything from fantasy, horror, scifi, or just about anything else you can think of and looking for a game based on that. Wargames are a bit less common on roll20 but fun none the less. in these you and an opponent take lead of armies and face off in epic battles. I always enjoyed them, but you would have to do a bit of reasearch yourself.
I'm working on recreating those games in roll20 ^^
@Anthony I am 100% intrested in this.

You may want to check out Tabletop and WatchItPlayed on youtube. There are lots of good videos from these and other providers that show you gaming sessions of several different types of games. Enjoy and welcome!
