How do you actually "log out"?

OK this may be the most super obvious question but I cannot find an answer anywhere. Since I started using Roll20 last year I have only ever been the GM. When the game session came to a close I would hit the exit game button and be returned to a "Thanks for playing screen" and from there I could navigate back to the game's Launch Screen. I thought it was the same for the players but then soon realised that every time they hit "exit game" they instead removed themselves from the entire campaign! So my question is, how does a player log out and return to the Launch screen. Is the only way to close the browser (tab) and navigate back to roll20?

It sounds as thought your players may be confusing the 'exit game' button in the VTT with the 'leave game' button in the game menu on the site proper. The former, as you note, will properly disconnect you from the current VTT session while the latter will leave the game completely. In short, this is fine to use: This should only be used when you are never intending to return to a game:
ah ok, thanks. So hitting the "Exit Button" as you show above, just ends the session? My players must have done something else because a few have accidentally left the campaign proper.

Yeah, using the 'exit game' button will only log them out of that current VTT session and is the suggested method of leaving... most people just close the browser tab but sometimes this can lead to 'ghost' players who appear logged in to the VTT but aren't, not a huge deal but can be disconcerting for a DM to log in to do prep and see a player sat there... waiting... and unresponsive... lol. Sounds like they are using the 'leave game' button by mistake to me, that should result in a 'are you sure' prompt but I guess people don't always read popups! Maybe the popup could do to be a bit more ominous too...

What Z said is right. One comment, Ziechael said: Maybe the popup could do to be a bit more ominous too... Yes a brighter bold warning message would be good there, BUT, this issue should not be a big deal that repeats often.  Anyone who does "Leave Game" once will soon find out, they aren't in that game group anymore.  People are unlikely to repeat this mistake after having done it once. The resulting error becomes fairly self-explanatory.
There is nothing in the English language to distinguish "Exit Game" from "Leave Game." While it is a good idea to have extra-clear warnings once you click the wrong thing, it would be good not to invite the confusion in the first place. I'd feel much better if the phrases were more distinct ("End Session" versus "Leave Game Permanantly", for example).

Sarah, I agree, but that would be a "Suggestions & Ideas" sub-forum request to post. There is a lot of ambigious terminology, programmer-speak, inconsistent labeling, legacy vocabulary, on the GUI / UX of this site. A lot of buttons were labeled by programmers on the Dev Team, not by linguists or usability specialists, in the tech history of this site.
