it has something to do with setting permanent darkness because when i "hide areas" with permanent darkness selected then the weird visual goes away

it seems to also...or ultimately have something to do with NightVision on the tokens. what's the best to set this up so i don't constantly see the shadows from every token on the map?

Some suggestions: 1. Turn off nightvision for all non-PC tokens. - This reduces the number of vision sources and reduces the clutter. 2. Turn down GM opacity. — This reduces the visibility of overlapping vision sources 3. Don't us tints on vision for night vision. Use Dimming. Tints, particularly dark ones, multiply.
