line of sight

I'm not sure where to post this question if it should be some where else let me know. The question has come up in my campaign about if i can or cannot put disadvantage based on line of sight.couple of scenarios, one standing directly behind another character trying to cast a spell or shoot a ranged weapon because the argument is that it is a 5 foot square that the character in front occupies so the character behind should be able to cast a spell at a monster or shoot an arrow, i ruled it would be at disadvantage and some people did not agree.  Second scenario is if they are trying to cast a spell or shoot an arrow past a few characters and one front facing the monster the character is trying to shoot the ranged weapon at usually the one casting or shooting is from an angle. I'm not sure i'm making the right call so just wondering how everyone else handles these types of situations
