GM Notes in Tokens Keep Disappearing

When it comes to shops and treasure I have loved the idea of using the GM Notes on the tokens rather than having to open a handout etc. However it is no longer trusted as it seems to be fine saving, and still there the next time I check, but soon as it's game time I go on and they are all empty :S This is such a shame and worrying, the only thing I'm doing now is having to try to remember and rewrite in Obsidian, but I shouldn't have to be worried about things not saving in my game. Everything I have written is fresh, not copy and pasted at all. I did info on Aprprox 20 grave stones, 25 generic NPC's at markets giving lil backstory snippets and what they sell, 6 items in shops, 10 books in an NPC's library 3 teasure tokens AND 10 enemies so I can quickly check for any triggers to remind myself if/ when they move to other locations. 1 quest enemy relating to the story, 5 puzzle tokens Just enough now, I always click save, it stays for a time, and it's just really heartbreaking that this keeps happening, I kept hoping after each time before that the bug would be fixed. I'd love it to keep a lot of my game prep in Roll20 but I shouldn't have to panic whether tokens (or far worse if it were handouts or character sheets) info is suddenly going to disappear. This is more of a rant than anything, but just needed to express this, I don't know if anyone else has had this problem, but basically for anyone, don't trust the tokens, have a copy of just use something else. This has happened too many times to be an anomaly and I'd be saddened if anyone else had any issues with their game using this system for grabbing quick info (esp for anyone who has a slow laptop and having to open handouts can run a bit slow, so again the token notes would have been super useful). I keep a huge amount of info in token notes, including a village with over 70 namedNPCs, and a city with nearly a hundred named and detailed locations. I've never dropped any data. I suspect there is some procedural error. Are these tokens being used as default tokens? Can you give some reprosteps?

Not all are default, The only ones that default are main and generic NPC's and specific enemies, but items, treasure, puzzle parts, and generic enemies don't, so I don't understand why it can happen to both versions. and the steps are also varied, Default Token  1. Add a sheet, Complete the sheet first, Save Complete NPC name etc. in Edit Save Add token, then connect the token as Default, Save Default Token 2.  I'll add sheet, type the NPC name etc. in Edit, Save Then I complete the character sheet, Save then add the token, then Default that token, Save 3.  Default Token I'll add sheet, type the NPC name etc. in Edit, Save then add the token, wait for the sheet to refresh with the new name, then Default that token, Save Then I complete the character sheet, Save No Default 1. Also same as Token Default 1,2, and 3 of making a character sheet, for other NPCs, but I don't do the Default part (for my generic enemies, and items). Default Tokens - Non Default tokens - and - No Character Sheet Tokens 1 Adding/ Editing a token, Giving it a name (if not linked to a specific sheet whether as Default token or not),  Changing nameplate settings, Save, Go to GM Notes, type the data that I want, Save  And yet from all of the above, I've had these tokens GM Notes that I've written, stayed temporarily, and after X times checking it to make sure it remains, which differ, the next time I check, it's just gone, I've not edited, or deleted. I've just clicked on the token, gone to GM Notes to read the info to my players, and it's blank.. <3 That's great yours haven't had any issues <3 , so how do you do it? Does it differ from how I described above?  And what do you think can be done if you think it's procedural or other type of if something? Toña

Hm. My suspicion was that you had made the token, saved it as default for a character, edited the gm notes and then they were gone next time you pulled out character's token. That's usually the problem when token settings change unexpectedly. Some folks mistakenly assume that once a default token is saved, it automatically updates to any later changes. That doesn't seem to be what is happening though. Are you running any extensions that modify the workings of Roll20 (ex. VTTES)? And to answer your later question: In most cases, my procedure is: Create character Create token art or rollable token Assign token to character. Make any token adjustments that are going to be common across all Save as default Then one of several possibilities: Pull out fresh default token or duplicate on on the map, edit GM notes. (most common use: note and control tokens) Create new token art, assign it to character, edit GM notes (most common use Commoners with different token art, but who use Abilities tied tot eh commoner sheet Pull out fresh default token or duplicate on on the map, re-assign art with an API script, Edit GM notes Create new token art, set up with an API script, edit GM notes. In any case, my world and city maps have held all their GM notes for years at a time, in some cases, quite complex ones.

I don't have any extensions, nor due to not being a Pro account, that I don't have any API's running in either.. Once I have written in GM Notes of a token, that token won't be deleted, it will either stay in the token layer or move to GM layer to be revealed at a later date, as if I brought it out again, (as I find it helpful it remaining on the map so I don't forget about them, plus having them prepped saves time). I'll try and do a test and see how it goes. and jot down a note of how many times I've checked and it's stayed (including if it disappears too of course). Toña
